EXCLUSIVE: Paul Greengrass won’t be directing Fantastic Voyage, the 3D remake being prepped by 20th Century Fox and producer James Cameron. I’m told that Greengrass is focusing instead on Treasure Island, a stylized adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson novel that Sherlock Holmes producer Lionel Wigram is working on at Warner Bros. Greengrass hasn’t locked into that project either; they are trying to agree on a screenwriter.
Greengrass had been in talks for Fantastic Voyage but never committed, despite all the hoopla in the trades. Producers Cameron and Jon Landau alluded to this while promoting the Avatar DVD release. They said they were high on the Shane Salerno script, but when asked about Greengrass, they mentioned wanting to date before putting on a ring. Well, there will be no trip to the altar and perhaps it’s all for the best. 3D is already giving people headaches; imagine this film shot in the director’s trademark hand-held style? Greengrass was the first — and so far only — director shown the script, but that will change shortly as Cameron and Fox look to land another big name. Note to Greengrass: now that you’re single again, any chance on reconsidering a fourth Bourne Identity, the movie we all really really want to see?

cameron vs greengrass. don king could promote the hell out of that

I have the coolest idea for the script for “Fantastic Voyage”. And although a good director, Greengrass is not needed here and will be easily replaced–sounds like he is beefing with James Cameron about something.
I’m much more excited about the Cameron produced (and possibly directed?) “Forbidden Planet.” Although maybe Cameron has a really cool spin on “Fantastic Voyage” that could excite people about medical science the way “Avatar” excited people about biology, physics and astronomy? But I don’t get it yet — this just seems like “Innerspace” to me and that doesn’t have me enthused. Still, whatever Cameron wants to do, he should get to do because as a loyal audience member, I trust him. If he was doing a re-boot of “Police Academy” I would go see it.
I don’t know JC at all but I do know PG very well and he doesn’t take shit from anyone. Would have been pretty entertaining to be a fly on that wall. I don’t always agree with PG’s choices but he knows exactly what he is doing.
I’m confused, if he was still in talks and never committed, how could he drop out. No reports ever said he was in it, just that he was talking to them. THis is gettting ridiculous.
I heard talks broke down when Cameron told Greengrass he had to use a tripod.
HAR! HAR! HAR!
Sorry, guys. Totally tongue-in-cheek.
The Green Zone went $80m over its approved budget and after worldwide marketing costs will lose $90m for Universal. The last Bourne also went way over budget but made money because it was Bourne. I heard on good authority that he was fired from FV because FOX was afraid that his total lack of experience with 3-D, shooting style and Avatar level effects could cause costs with Greengrass to spiral completely out of control.
This project has been a LOT of directors.
I can tell you exactly what happened. Cameron is a meticulous planner. Likes to nail everything in preproduction. Wants to know exactly what movie he’s shooting (or producing). Greengrass is a “let’s find it on the set-and if it’s not right we’ll reshoot it five times” kind of guy. Not strong on the pre-viz. Oil and water as far as approach and personal discipline. I’m personally in the Cameron corner on this one.
Cameron and Greengrass in a fight, so what? The more worrying thing is that both projects are remakes, reboots, rehashes or whatever the heck you want to call them. Enough already, we’ve seen, heard, and felt these stories before. Stop going for the easy, safe options and give us something original.
LEN WISEMAN should direct.
Call me crazy, but…should PG even be allowed around budgets this big for a while, regardless of the material (unless, of course, it’s Bourne 4). In the context of his career, his success has been the result, to be blunt, of riding the coattails of either someone or something else. It’d be safe to say the Bourne sequels would have thrived despite his presence (though his style was perfect for the material) and “United 93″…who didn’t feel obligated to see it? “Green Zone” proved just how costly of a risk he is, especially with how he prefers to work. I’d say give him $15 million, four interior locations and the script for “Paranormal Activity 2″ and watch the money roll in.
