Columbia Pictures and Happy Madison are in early talks to develop a movie based on Patrick Jean’s video-game themed sci-fi invasion video Pixels, which has become a viral sensation. No deal yet at Columbia, but Happy Madison bought the rights to Jean’s work and Adam Sandler’s company is a fixture on the lot. The idea would be to do it in 3D. Check out Jean’s work that created all the fuss:

i dont get it
How is this even remotely a movie? There’s no story here.
That will be funny stuff!
Nice (if slight) visual concept, but once again it’s a case of “all style, no substance” – this is the trouble with 99% video games and/or digital shorts trying to be transformed into feature films: what initially worked fine or is originally charming or even remotely interesting for the duration of a three-minute short typically gets padded-out and ultimately diluted to fit feature length format. Game Over.
I agree that the project is most likely doomed to being mediocre at best but I’m not sure it’s fair to say that the shorts or makers of the shorts do so with a view to making them into a movie. Is that what you’re saying? Because I suspect the reason he did it as a short is precisely because of the concept’s lack of breadth.
Cute. No movie here. Waste of time.
Of course it will be in 3D, why wouldn’t it be?!!!
The title of this film should be called “Grasping at Straws” or “Scraping the Bottom of the Barrel.”
Since film rights have been bought for all of the board games, this is kind of crap is the only thing left for new story ideas.
Opening shot of Sandler as loser 40 year old. VO describes his life as a failure beyond age of 15. Flashback to him playing in Frogger championship and losing to other 40ish Sandler crony (somebody call Rob Schneider!) who becomes big shot in video game world. Sandler lives with mom, ect.
Then we reveal…THE MAGIC VIDEO GAME! Wha-? where’d this come from?!! Gotta put a quarter into it. Nothing happened! Oh well. Sandler walks away as sparks fly from the game. SOMETHING DID HAPPEN!!!
Insert shots of YouTube video intercut with Sandler trying to warn childhood sweetheart (Call Olivia Munn!) of pixels eating NYC. No one believes him until HE BELIEVES IN HIMSELF.
Set piece, set piece, set piece, lame third act and Rotten Tomatoes give is 31%.
Oh, and let’s make it 3D, shall we?
Honestly? KEEP this comment. You’ve hit the nail so squarely on the head I can barely believe it. Genius.
I just watched the short. pretty cool stuff. I’m no video game freak but I was totally entertained. you gotta admit it looked great! is there a story there? not much of one, but there could/will be. also, I’m a bit fed up with having 3D shoved down our throats but sounds as though they’ll shoot it in 3D and it’ll actually benefit the subject matter as opposed to distract from. I smell $$$$$.
that was fucking awesome
Producer Johnny Alves…is that Johnny Alves aka Johnny Drama? If so, way to go Drama!
Think Tron in reverse with Adam Sandler. Just another High concept comedy, no worse than Bedtime Stories.
