EXCLUSIVE: Two years ago, Southland was unveiled at NBC’s upfront presentation. Tomorrow the cop drama will once again be introduced at an upfront presentation, this time at TNT’s event after the show was recently renewed by the cable network. “We’re delighted that we’re still alive,” executive producer John Wells said. “So far, we’ve used up the fourth of our nine lives.”
But along with the excitement of staying on at TNT came the reality of having to adjust the series, originally developed and produced for a broadcast network, to the economics of cable. The budget of Southland is being cut by more than a third going into Season 3. As a result, not all cast members will continue as regulars. And those who remain had been asked to reduce their fees and/or the number of episodes they appear in.
“I wish we had more money,” Well said. ”We are hoping to find a way to have a couple of more regulars if they prefer it that way or recurring if they want to have the opportunity to also appear on other series.”
And the producers themselves will take deeper cuts than the actors, said to be larger than 30%. But Wells is not complaining. “I don’t want to sound upset about it,” he said. “We got to keep doing the show, and we are delighted that TNT stepped up and have been very generous. The reality is in the big difference between how you set up to do a show off the bat on cable and how you transition a broadcast show to cable. It’s new ground.”
Staying on as regulars are Regina King and Michael Cudlitz, who have completed their deals, and Ben McKenzie and Shawn Hatosy who are in negotiations. McKenzie, King and Cudlitz are scheduled to appear at TNT’s upfront presentation tomorrow, while Hatosy had to pull out because of personal commitment. After Southland’s cancellation by NBC, series regular Kevin Alejandro landed a recurring gig on HBO’s True Blood where he was upped to a regular with the blessing of the Southland producers. He is still expected to do several episodes of the TNT drama next season. Wells also is looking to bring back in some capacity former regulars Arija Bareikis and Michael McGrady.
Tom Everett Scott started off as a regular on the show on NBC but was switched to a guest star status after the network didn’t like his character and wanted him killed. But the producers loved him and kept him alive. And now they have had preliminary conversations with Scott to return for next season, possibly as a regular.

glad this show is coming back, I always found it better fare than most shows on network. Excellent cast, writing and music too.
The show is a mess… It’s true politics that it even got picked up.
Sounds like Wells has more class about this with TNT than Wolf did with NBC about cutting their own fees. Wells made alot of $ with ER and is OK about keeping his baby alive, whereas Dick has made a ton of $ with his LOs and still was unwilling to giveback on an ailing series like the original LO – and that’s after NBC picked up his own spinoff.
Yawn, snore, Southland’s a bore.
still better than … law and order: los angeles
Fusion it with Law & Order. They’ll do the first half, the D.A.’s office will do the second. That would be the ultimate cost cutter show…
That’s actually not a bad idea to breathe life into to two uninteresting shows! Could be an interesting concept to consider for other dying shows, combine the best of two shows to create some fresh storylines.
They should have killed off Scott’s character, after he got shot neearly point blank in the chest. I never really bought the idea that he survived and was a bit disappointed that he did [too much of the hand of God stepping in there].
They must kill off Emily Bergl’s pain-in-the-ass character. Her incessant abject foolishness makes no sense.
In my very humble opinion, TNT should bring Marisa Echeverria back. She played that Latina cop who ended up in bed with Officer Ben in the second to last episode. Ben needs a love interest. Marisa is a fantastic NYC actress. I’d start watching the show regularly if she was on it.
More than 30% cut… wow. I wonder whose getting the cut as well?
Thanks for the update.
Not a surprise, but why bring back Hatosy and McGrady? Other than Hatosy’s character’s wife, they were the worst characters on the show. Trim the fat and let King/McKenzie/Cudlitz carry the show (as they’ve done so far).
Love this show… one of the better written/acted cop shows around these days. Certainly better IMO than all the LO / CSI shows that are the same every week. Give them more $$$$. Cudlitz rules!
I love SouthLand, so whatever they can do to bring it back as close to its original incarnation as possible will make me happy. I like McGrady’s character, and his teenage trouble-maker daughter and tough wife – how many command and control parents end up with wild kids? Plenty! Plus, they left that on a bit of a cliffhanger with the outing of the affair. Also, I know I am in the minority in liking Hatosy’s character and his dysfunctional marriage to Bergl’s character, but I think it is interesting.
Psyched the show is coming back. Respect that Wells took a big cut to get it back on though he can afford it. The show is really well written and acted and they don’t water it down either. Agree Hatosy is great on the show. Understand the comments on the wife, but he rocks on it as does Regina King. I like that they follow both police officers and detectives simultaneously.
If these 30% budget cuts lead to Hanna-Barbera type repeating backgrounds, I am all for it!
Steve — Stop you sound nutty.
I would be so happy if they would at least splurge on a tripod for the camera. I have heard great things about the script and the cast of this show but I have not been able to watch it for more then 10 mins without getting frustrated with the constant zigging and zagging rocking and zooming shaking camera
They should improve the cinematography. Do what “The Shield” did and use super16 cameras. Its cheaper than digital. The show is way to contrasty There is absolutely no shadow detail and the bright areas are blown out. L.A. is a colorful place and the color palate from the RED camera sucks.
I am ecstatic that “Southland” will be renewed for a third season. Great writing, directing, and acting. Please keep the enigmatic character played by Tom Everett Scott as a regular.
At least it got renewed, overcoming major odds, and proving those pseudo experts from a cetain ratings site wrong. Come January, they’re going to start using Southland as their personal punching bag once again, unless they train their sights on another hapless show.
“Former” regular Arija Bareikis? That’s a laugh. From Day One, she was only in about half the episodes, and even when she did appear, they gave her nothing to do and made her look as unattractive as possible. What a colossal waste of such a talented actress.
After the second season “finale” it’s kind of upsetting that Arija Bareikis won’t be a regular anymore.
But this cast-cutting also kind of makes me wonder why The Closer has always been able to have such a massive cast (that appear in every episode). They should trim some of that show’s budget and give it to Southland.
Plus, I’d like to meet a fan of the show who actually likes Tom Everett Scott’s character. The actor is fantastic, but the character is a downright borefest.
I liked Tom Everett Scott’s character – he’s this cop who aspires to be a writer but is held back by his own shortcomings and responsibilities, something most people can relate to in some way.
As for Hatosy, I think he’s one of the show’s best characters with even more going for his character than King’s. The scene with the little kid at the end of season two was Emmy worthy in my opinion.
Finally, it’s a shame that Bareikis’s character is being cut back, the ‘bad cop’ storyline between her and Cudlitz was getting really interesting.
Solid reporting, as always. A terrific show, and deserves to have five of its nine lives left, with or without a plush budget.
One request: Pls. keep us up-to-date on the Law & Order negotiations with TNT. A radically different show from Southland but, still, a classic. And (IMHO) considerably more interesting than the overwrought spin-offs. More L&O, less SVU/SUV; that’s my thought.
I know. A move to TNT is a long shot at best, but we can always hope.
I love Southland and love Hatosy. The storyline involving the young girl who witnessed a gang killing was great with fantastic performances all around. The episode of Hatosy realizing the kid he tried to keep out of a gang but failed was emmy worthy. Love him, love the show. Glad it’s back.
At least Law&Order will continue except a classier network. I happen to agree make the cinematography more gritty and realistic and try shooting the shows in digital video to make even more interesting visually. Just an idea. I was reading a headline here in the same blog that ABC could get Ghost Whiperer too.
Overall on NBC Law&Order had a long run. Looking forward to see the season finale monday night and I read in EW there’s talks of an offical two hour send off in the fall.
This will end like Raising the Bar. There is no way this show is continuing after this year. This is politics.
I LOVE this show. I don’t know why people bag on it because it is hands down better than any other cop show out there. I love the realism, the characters and how their lives are shown. I’m looking forward to season 3!
