Disney announced that Steven Spielberg will mount War Horse as his next directing project. This was the chatter among the agencies since March, when Spielberg traveled to London to see the stage adaptation of the Michael Morpugo novel, which DreamWorks acquired last year and hired Lee Hall to write. DreamWorks denied it at the time. The play is about a man who searches for his horse after it is taken from him for use in WWI. Disney will distribute the film Aug. 10, 2011. It has been a long search for Spielberg to find the first film that DreamWorks will make in its new co-financing relationship with India-based Reliance. He was expected to make that film a new version of Harvey, but he dropped out of that film over difficulty finding an actor to take the role that James Stewart played in the original, the man who befriends the six and-one half foot tall invisible rabbit. (Previous: When Will It Be Showtime For Spielberg?) Below is the trailer for the London production of War Horse.

Will Spielsy still be interested when he realizes there were no Nazis in WWI?
LOL. Maybe he’ll just turn it into yet another son looking for his estranged father story, except this time the horse is daddy.
Well…there ARE Germans…and Hitler DID fight in WW1…lol
you’d think that Spielberg would sign up to direct a more interesting project…like “Interstellar”; what happened to that project?
Those horse puppets are equal parts creepy/gimmicky. But it looks/sounds like this is an extremely moving play?
I’d prefer to see Spielberg take on modern/present day life a bit more frequently than he does now. In the last 20 years he’s directed what, three movies set in the present day?
That looks fantastic. But that horse better damn well make it back.
to direct i assume?
No… he’s playing the horse you idiot.
Der Spiegelmeister is smart to avoid a “Harvey” remake. Not sure I believe the reason for not doing it is a lack of a leading male (calling Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Jim Carrey and 20 others!)
The original is magical for many and they might trash any remake on principle. Potential downside is too high. And it it’s successful, Stevie would not get the proper credit/kudos.
Idea for Jeff Katzenberg. How about Dreamworks Animation tries an ANIMATED “Harvey” remake. And whither David Geffen?
I am thrilled to know this. The play is just tremendous…..no need for cynical commentary……this is a wonderful story……will be a challenge for him to make it into a movie.
Seems like Spielberg definitely has NO interest in doing that movie on Lincoln now. Poor Liam, waiting all this time for nothing. Well, at least his career got a shot in the arm with TAKEN, and now with the A-TEAM, he’s on a roll.
Finally, a project worthy of his ability. There won’t be a dry eye in the house. Nice to see the Big Man is swinging for the fences, again.
In the meantime, check out Wajda’s “LOTNA.”
Jamie Bell is practically guaranteed for the lead in this. Mark my words.
sounds like Finding Nemo … with a horse… and soldiers … on a stage.
Not a dry eye in the house is right…
loved the part where the time traveling Raptor comes on stage and rips apart the horse limb from limb.. . then goes on to explain that if the horse were to live… he would lead Hitler’s charge to take over the world.
