The 2010 Drama Desk Awards nominations were announced today. Among the surprises is that Addam’s Family, despite initially getting pummeled by critics, is up for Outstanding Musical, one of eight award nominations. While the splendidly reviewed Fences was nominated for Outstanding Play Revival, Denzel Washington wasn’t nominated for Best Actor. His co-star, Viola Davis was nominated in the Featured Actress category. Among the film actors nominated are Jude Law for Hamlet, Alfred Molina for Red, Liev Schreiber for A View From the Bridge, Anne Hathaway for Twelfth Night and Laura Linney for Time Stands Still. The season is fast coming to a close: The Lucille Lortel Awards for Off-Broadway were handed out last night (The Orphans’ Home Cycle won Outstanding Play, The Scottsboro Boys won Outstanding Musical), and Tony nominations will be revealed tomorrow. On the Drama Desk noms, here are the highlights:
Outstanding Musical
American Idiot
Everyday Rapture
Memphis
The Addams Family
The Scottsboro Boys
Yank!
Outstanding Play
My Wonderful Day
Happy Now?
Red
Next Fall

So Help Me God!
The Boys in the Band
Outstanding Musical Revival

Viola Davis is nominated in the Featured Actress Category. For the Tony nominations tomorrow if she is nominated it will be in the Best Actress Category. Per ruling reached last week with Tony Committee.
Um, they’re THEATER awards. What does it matter which film actors got nominated? Never mind that Alfred Molina, Liev Schreiber and even Jude Law work all the time on stage…
My money is on ‘A Little Night Music’ to win Best Revival. Sondheim rules that category.
