EXCLUSIVE: The Broadway season finished with a flourish of openings, and the Tony nominations are in. So here’s a bit of intel on a musical that is coming together in the future. I hear that Sting is planning to write his first Broadway musical. He will partner with Brian Yorkie, who received the 2009 Tony Award for Best Score for Next To Normal, the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical. Sting, who has resumed his solo career after a reunion tour with The Police, is not a newcomer to Broadway; he starred in a version of 3 Penny Opera that bowed on Broadway in 1989, and lasted 65 performances. Details are scant on the show, but I’m told that it’s an original idea that deals in the world Sting grew up in, but that it is not expressly autobiographical. Sting has described that world in detail in his memoir, Broken Music. I will tell you more when I learn it.

This is a big deal. Heard Jeffrey Seller and Kevin McCollum beat out David Stone and the Weisslers for this. Can anyone confirm?
Sting is a complete professional and a gentleman to work with. This is a guaranteed success.
Well, not GUARANTEED success. There could be lutes involved.
In “Threepenny Opera” he rendered a rather lush yet languid and interesting soft rock “Mack the Knife.” As you point out though not a new star name on the Broadway marquees as far as names go.
George C. Wolfe and Sting might be a very productive collaboration.
This sounds exciting. Having seen Sting perform once way back during the Blue Turtles release, the guy owns a room. Showmanship comes easy to him. The interesting thing will be to see how he goes from “pop” to “Broadway” with his music.
Does anyone know if it’ll be a stand-alone original or a “Jersey Boys” type of thing?
If it’s an original it could help Broadway evolve a bit.
Who cares…What people should really know is that Sting took a million bucks to play for the Genocidal Daughter of the Dictator of Uzbekistan…Yup Mr Human Rights is a sellout…
I need to renew my visa into the torture free american empire, this is going to be good.
