Mike Fleming

sting1EXCLUSIVE: The Broadway season finished with a flourish of openings, and the Tony nominations are in. So here’s a bit of intel on a musical that is coming together in the future. I hear that Sting is planning to write his first Broadway musical. He will partner with Brian Yorkie, who received the 2009 Tony Award for Best Score for Next To Normal, the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical. Sting, who has resumed his solo career after a reunion tour with The Police, is not a newcomer to Broadway; he starred in a version of 3 Penny Opera that bowed on Broadway in 1989, and lasted 65 performances. Details are scant on the show, but I’m told that it’s an original idea that deals in the world Sting grew up in, but that it is not expressly autobiographical. Sting has described that world in detail in his memoir, Broken Music. I will tell you more when I learn it.
