Well, that didn’t take long. The Parents Television Council this morning issued the following statement regarding new CBS comedy series $#! My Dad Says, which was announced yesterday.
LOS ANGELES (May 20, 2010) – The Parents Television Council denounced CBS for choosing to insert an expletive into the name of its new show, “$#*! My Dad Says,” scheduled to air at 8:30 pm ET/PT on Thursdays in the fall. “CBS intentionally chose to insert an expletive into the actual name of a show, and, despite its claim that the word will be bleeped, it is just CBS’ latest demonstration of its contempt for families and the public. There are an infinite number of alternatives that CBS could have chosen but its desire to shock and offend is crystal clear in this decision,” said PTC President Tim Winter. “The title of this show is the opposite of fleeting (profanity) – it is bold, shameless, and in-your-face. There is incredible irony that CBS made this announcement the same day that it submitted its legal brief before the Third Circuit Court declaring that there was no mens rea to air an indecent Super Bowl broadcast.”

Fuck the PTC. What world do they live in? The world isn’t going to end because they say shit on the air. What’s the big fucking deal?
Are you kidding me? These people need to get real jobs instead of wasting their time on things that don’t matter. Honestly, if they’re that upset about the show, they don’t have to turn on CBS between 8:30 and 9:00 on Thursdays: It’s that simple and they know when it’s on, they mention the time in their press release! Of course, living in the 1930′s, members of the PTC probably don’t know how to use a remote or the buttons on their TVs in order to change the channel.
Also, how is it “bold and shocking” when the actual explative is censored? This makes no sense!
Huge promotional value for CBS. Thursdays is a male youth oriented night and $#*! like this only causes attention that 18-34 males love. It is a funny word. Like fart.
I’m so tired of this bullshit. Seriously. America is a whiny baby when it comes to what we show on tv. Kids over there see a boob and don’t freak out and jerk off all over the place.
PTC are a bunch of morons. And so are the people who support them and keep them going. Children learn more about sex, dirty words and the world from going to school and their peers than they ever will from the media. Maybe the PTC should take on the playground next. They are just a bunch of mind control freaks.
Although I don’t generally agree with PTC on this one I do. CBS could have chosen some alternative that was arguably funnier and less base. Throwing sh!t around is easy, and it dumbs down the humor. Exposing children to more and more base humor that lacks wit, or effort, just turns them into adults who eschew effort for ease and speed. “Bleeping” the word is ineffectual because in real life viewers will refer to the show using the expletive and not a ridiculous bleep sound affect. Could have been something else, something smarter and better.
No, they could NOT have chosen some “alternative.” This show was based on a Twitter feed that has a built-in fanbase of over one million subscribers. You change the name, you lose the name recognition. The name of the Twitter feed is what the show has to be named. It’s that simple!

The name of this show is the name of a Twitter account (that is freakin’ high-larious), and if they had called the show something else, I never would have heard of it and would not have ever known that JH’s stream had been turned into a show, since I’m not much for Twitter anymore. (Snooze.)
Almost none of the erstwhile followers would have gone searching for whatever show wherever, but once you call a show “$#*! My Dad Says,” we all know what it is and will check it out. Ditto for people who have heard of it, but didn’t follow, or only saw a few of the funniest tweets on re-post.
This is one of those cases where the name really does matter. Sorry PTC — Fail!
How do these people not realize that nearly EVERYTHING said on television or in film is not half as bad as what children actually say/hear on the playgrounds? Come on!
They make it sound like CBS went out of its way to “shock and offend.” This is the name of the original twitter account Justin Halpern wrote, and they are merely staying true to the original concept, which is what drew so many followers in the first place.

yes, because if we pretend these words don’t exist, the children will never learn them. And it’s kind of funny to hear them bashing CBS, which is the most whitebread of all the networks. Personally I never had a filthier mouth than when I was nine, and I didn’t hear any of those words on TV. Then I outgrew it, like everyone else in the world.

I don’t get it. The word is bleeped in the title and will be bleeped in the series. Dozens of network shows are filled with rapes, drugs and violence every night.
Sounds to me like the PTC is fishing for a headline more than anything. They must be aware that, in the age of everyone, kids included, having internet access, what they do is completely irrelevant.
It’s almost as if they think if they pretend hard enough that we’re still living in the 70′s, they’ll be able to create an alternate timeline where we are.
I think the PTC has been watching too much Lost.
PTC launches campaigns like this for one purpose: their own fundraising. Priority #1 for non-profits is to fundraise and those orgs that specifically take on the media, such at PTC, Camera, Media Matters, etc. are able to generate publicity to help their revenue purposes. You don’t like PTC? Go to their website and see your options for action. They list names, addresses and e-mails for all their local chapter heads; write them. Call them. Show up at their meetings. You can join PTC as a non-dues-paying member; that way, you get access to their member blogs and can post your comments. Go to their online store and see what Hollywood DVDs and other merchandise they’re selling and for which they get a percentage of revenue; these come from virtually every studio (perhaps your employers), so go make your voices heard to them. The reason organizations like PTC are so successful is that we all complain but we don’t do anything. Here’s the chance.
