This morning I read in The New York Times that ”CBS shook up the upfront week on Wednesday with the most startling moves of any network for the coming season.” But then I read the Wall Street Journal, whose parent company News Corp also owns CBS’ rival Fox, and its headline ”Playing It Safe” for a story that said “CBS is doubling down on what has worked for the network in recent years — and four decades ago, too.” I’m loving this newspaper rivalry.

Well, they aren’t adding a ton of new shows so they are kinda playing it safe. At the same time, they are switching time periods of a few of their established shows so it’s kinda risky. It can be looked at both ways.
It’s humorous but it points to the ultimate flaws of deregulation which has allowed so much consolidation within the media. For those of us who understand that the WSJ is owned by News Corp, we get it. We read between the lines and apply the filter and move on. But for the average joe who isn’t paying attention to that sort of thing — and let’s face it, it does get complicated as to who owns what — slowly, over time, readers come to be lulled into the positions which that paper takes throughout its news coverage and not simply on its editorial pages.
Not sure how it all shakes out over time…hopefully the net will remain relatively free and unfettered…but no good comes from these behemoth organizations who are vertically integrated in ways that were once unimaginable for the very reason pointed out in this post.
The train has left the station and there’s no turning back. I get that.
I have to agree with the Times on this one. CBS seems to have the most promising lineup of all the broadcast networks.
CBS fall line up in drama should play well in Arizona. It is built to appeal to older, conservative, white middle class males who feel they should still run the world. And on CBS they do. It is derivative in content and all about scaring the old people who watch their network.
The Good Wife is a freak accident for them.
Nobody with a brain takes anything Rupert-related seriously. The guy is a very rich buffoon.
The NYT wasn’t paying attention – nor did they read Deadline yesterday:
“CBS Goes For ‘Aggressive Stability.’ That was CBS’s term.
How does the NYT interpret that as ‘shook up’ with ‘startling moves’???
So only old people watch Big Bang Theory? Ooookay, I’m sure the the show Bleep My Dad Says will only appeal to old people too.
Outside of big bang and HIMYM, yes mostly old people watch CBS.
Maybe CBS should weigh in with a review of the Wall Street Journal’s new and lame “Greater New York” section where they pretend to care about local issues so they can lure advertisers with (plagiarized?) NY Post style stories and goad the NY Times…
I can’t decide if the Journal is worse now that News Corp owns it or is it still just as bad as when the Bancroft family ran it…the editorials are laughably bad!
GE is so “hooked up” to your tax dollars, what do they care about their entertainment end. Unless for propaganda purposes…..warming now cooling always a scam.
