USA Network is looking to re-enter the half-hour comedy arena with its first script deal for a half-hour project in more than a decade. The network has put in development Driven, a single-camera comedy from Designing Women creator Linda Bloodworth. The project stars comedian Ron White as a guy who, after losing his job, starts a limo service. Bloodworth will write the script and will executive produce the project with her husband, long-time collaborator Harry Thomason.
USA’s president of original programming Jeff Wachtel said
the network had been looking to expand its programming beyond its signature hourlong comedies.“We’ve had a great deal of success in the light one-hour genre, so now let’s find the next great thing for the brand,” he said. “We’re pushing in a bunch of directions, including half-hour comedy and reality.” Wachtel was quick to note that the network is not shifting its scripted development from the core one-hour fare to half-hour comedy and that agents shouldn’t be rushing to send boxes of half-hour scripts and pilots they might have lying around. “It’s a carefully staged assault; we’re not busting the door open, we’re cautiously opening the door to half-hour comedy,” he said.
There won’t be a great distinction between USA’s half-hour and hourlong comedies. Half-hour projects also will be “character-based, with an aspirational, blue-sky element to it,” Wachtel said. “More significantly, we will be looking for original voices, and working with Linda is a great way to start things off.” There is no timetable on greenlighting half-hour pilots or getting a half-hour series on the air, he added.
USA ran several half-hour comedies under the network’s old regime in the 1990s, including Weird Science, USA High and Campus Cops, before USA rebuild its brand as a home of light character-driven hourlong series over the past decade.

USA is very smart to start with Bloodworth! I saw the unaired project she did for the apparently slow witted HBO people and it was fantastic.
Way to go Wachtel! And with Ron White – USA is hitting on all cylinders!
In 10 years this is all Bloodworth can come up with – Ron White? USA is getting as bad as NBC with Leno.
Clearly you didn’t see her unaired HBO hour long series.
One of the best shows I’ve ever seen, funny, smart, incredible
Ron White was in that and he is fabulous!!
I still remember “The War Next Door,” USA’s last half-hour. That show was hilarious.
Linda obviously has GREAT forward thinking agents to pull off such a smart deal for her. I believe she left CAA for Innovative Artists a year or so ago.
Rick – Last year White was the highest paid and averaged the largest crowds of all stand-ups and you say that’s all they can come up with? Sounds pretty good to me. Besides you probably were not right for the part but I’ m sure you’ll work again.
I remember, too, “The War Next Door.” It was the show that basically acted as the weight that pulled the hilarious “Manhattan, AZ” into a desert sinkhole. Chad Everett and guest stars such as Sarah Silverman made the show one of the late 90′s funniest.
I cannot wait for this! It’ll be great to see some more major comedy talents on USA.
Hey, Starwangler2, are you freakin’ kidding me? 12 Miles of Bad Road was terrible. Linda has a great track record, but her last couple projects have been awful — anyone miss “Emeril?”
Wow!!!!!! Linda Bloodworth, she is a comedy genius. I can’t wait!!!
I too, saw the unaired show she did for HBO..what idiots they were/are for not airing it……! it was truly hilarious, one of the funniest and smartest hour shows I’ve ever seen!!!
Gosh, Rotten in Denmark must be another addled HBO employee – I too have seen every unaired episode of 12 Miles and it was f’ing great. My boss wanted to buy it and HBO would not even return his calls. Other than Trene, HBO has nothing even close to 12 Miles.
What a bunch of provincal idiots these people are!
i have seen all of 12 miles….i still watch it often with my friends and they all love it….i am so ready for some well written comedy shows, reality shows are a waste of my time. come on …make me laugh…..good luck Linda and Harry
