EXCLUSIVE: Things are back on with Matthew Vaughn and 20th Century Fox on X-Men: First Class. A deal is being negotiated right now. That’s where I told you this was headed last week, until both sides confirmed that the deal hit the rocks last Thursday. Fox, having gone far down the road with the Kick-Ass director on X-Men: Last Stand, had put together a killer list of alternative directors for the job. Several were interviewed, but then others were cancelled after Vaughn came back into the picture this morning. Now, I hear the studio is working with his WME reps to close the deal. Great choice, I say.
Fox will put the film into production by late summer or early fall, with Bryan Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg producing. Vaughn began his career producing Guy Ritchie’s early films, and then turned heads when he directed the Daniel Craig gangster pic Layer Cake. His followup, Stardust, wasn’t a hit but that and Kick-Ass were interesting films. Before talks hit the rocks late last week, Vaughn had developed a creative partnership with original X-Men director Bryan Singer, who hatched an origin story that he was going to direct until Warner Bros locked him in for Jack The Giant Killer and Fox couldn’t wait. The film has undergone a late stage rewrite by Ashley Miller & Zack Stentz, the duo that did the same thing on another marvel property, Thor. Singer will produce with Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg.
Of the directors who were being considered when Vaughn bowed out, I’m told that Clash of the Titans director Louis Leterrier had made a strong impression, and the studio was meeting with Samuel Bayer, Timur Bekmambetov, Daniel Espinosa, David Slade and Carl Erick Rinsch, when Vaughn began negotiating for the job and Fox began canceling meetings.
With Kick-Ass Helmer X’d Out, Fox Zeroes In On Filmmakers For ‘X-Men: First Class’

Woohoo! Finally, some competence behind the camera on this. It will wipe the memory of Ratner’s debacle.
Awesome choice! Now make sure you put Cyclops in it and give his character the screen time he deserves!!
I agree!
Not enough info here about the movie. What’s it going to be about? Who’s Vaughn? What’s the deal with the REST of the CAST? Eh!
“Kick-Ass” was a fun couple of hours at the movie, and it even got a good performance out of Nick Cage again. Like “Stardust”, a very fine film, K-A will be overlooked for a while.
Vaughn has real ability. I hope the material is worthy of his skill.
Anyone know when First Class is set to start filming?
after LAYER CAKE I’ll watch anything this guy does.
Vince Vaughn should not be directing this movie he’s totally wrong for it why would they hire him?
Actually Robert Vaughn is directing it you know Napoleon Solo Man from U.N.C.L.E.
Note to Vaughn:
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!
Signed, Past Directors of Fox Tentpoles
Uh… this Matthew Vaughn… very different person than Vince. I heard this’ll be a reboot, which confuses me a bit — how could they do this if Wolverine franchise continues in a different continuity? I am not speaking in fanboy terms here, I’d think that sort of thing would confuse the general public a great deal.
For those who don’t know, First Class is based on the comic of the same name, which tells the stories of the first five X-Men learning how to use their powers and work as a team. The members? Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Beast and Angel. Obviously it can’t be a prequel to the latest X-Men franchise if this is the roster they use. So I am interested to see where they take this. A reboot wouldn’t be terrible if they introduced other characters like Rogue, Gambit, Wolverine, Colossus, etc… correctly down the road. Guess we’ll have to wait and see!
if this is done as a reboot with a young wolverine, then it won’t matter.
kick-ass was a kick ass movie. and it think vaughn is a fab choice. maybe chloe could play rouge, netryi, zoe saldana could play jean grey.
with the current cast, ian mckellan is too old he could be replaced by nicholas cage.
I wonder if they had to pay Ratner anything for passing on him. That douchenozzle always makes killer deals like that. Thanks Hollywood for not letting him near a feature in the last couple of years.
MV’s movies are kind of uninteresting and a little desperate but anything is better than Ratner.
The guy who should really direct this is Jack Bender of TV’s LOST.
INterested Observer… what are you smoking? “Kind of uninteresting”… Obviously, MV’s films are well above your intelligence level.
Fox would NEVER hire a tv land director for their tent pole.
DON’T DO IT MATT!!! You’re too good for this. Stick to the independent productions where you have complete creative freedom to make interesting movies.
Marc, Of course First Class can (and should) be a prequel to the current X-Men movies. They’ll use different, younger actors, as they should.
I believe the commenter above was referencing the actual X-Men? Iceman was a student in the current franchise world; not to mention Wolverine saves a younger Scott Summers/Cyclops in his spinoff (horrible tie-in) that he wouldn’t remember anyway.
Casting the X-Men cast properly – with the push for young actors being cast now – could allow for a reboot/origin story that doesn’t conflict with the Singer films. Which I’m sure he was fully aware of.
You know why he wears a baseball cap? Poor soul.
Why??/ tell!!
Yeah thankfully it’s not Brett Ratner or Joe CarnahaM!!
and I’ve got this funny feeling Ratner and CarnahaM are the same person….u never see them in the same place together and their movies specialize in extra helpings of the same carmelized cheeeeeese!
“The A-Team is on par with the same reboot as Batman” HUH??? YEAH….sure Joe…..keep telling yourself that….I mean Brett
FOX ACTION MOVIES SUCK!!!! Always a waste of money and after the last few….I give up.
I agree…..don’t do it Matt.
Maybe Claudia Schiffer will play one of the teachers at the Academy for new mutants. Her billboard poster in “Kick-Ass” was a fanboy treat…
Fox is by the far the worse to filmmaker’s – they will kick you out approve your effects, color your film. Tom is a frustrated director. They pick filmmakers they can push around – welcome to Fox. Check with other directors before signing!!!!
Don’t blame Ratner for X-Men 3 he was brought in days before shooting and was really just handed a script and was told to just shoot it. Singer when he left to Superman took the writers and crew with him that usually worked with him. Rhatner was basically like a last second sub… and really performed competently given the circumstanced. Now about Vaughn, this is an excellent choice.
Bryan Singer messed up Cyclops on his 2 X-Men movies. I wonder how Matthew Vaughn will handle Cyclops as a character. I really hope he gives him justice. Cyclops should be heroic and badass this time.
I think Mr. Vaughn has a balloon payment on the mortgage of his new pad. FOX low-balled him, he told them to f***-off, looked at his bank account and had an epiphany concerning the artistic potential of the X-men.
Why else would someone with a rising and varied career board the FOX superhero crap train?
Decent….and at least it ain’t Ratner or CarnaHAM
Vaughn didn’t learn his lesson from Rothman on the X-Men: The Last Stand go around?
Interesting to see if his deal includes script and cut approval, why else would he jump back into the hornet’s nest?
I still feel sorry for Gavin Hood
I require Matthew Vaughn to introduce Selene Galio / The Black Queen in X men First Class Movie. I need you to give Selene to deal with Selene plot.
I need to see Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Storm, even Scarlet Switch collaboration about Selene. it is calling with X force.
Selene mustn’t become a villain in X men First Class Movie. she must help the other to destroy Master Mold and the other with Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Storm, and Scarlet Switch.
I need you to approve my dream ( Matthew Vaughn ).
Selene is one of the most famous X men character.
Great choice! Would be waiting eagerly for the change now! Kudos
