ABC Announces 2010-11 Schedule
The Friends “reunion” on ABC will have to wait, at least for now, as the network opted against pairing Courteney Cox’s returning comedy Cougar Town and Matthew Perry’s new series Mr. Sunshine on the fall schedule.
“There was a lot of debate, we spent probably more time on that than any other decision,” ABC’s scheduling chief Jeff Bader said, adding that in the end, putting the two shows together might have been too “cutesy.” The network also thought that the Wednesday comedy block might be too young to launch two new series there, instead only moving The Middle to 8 PM, leading into new relationship comedy Better Together.
Along with Mr. Sunshine, another high-profile new scripted series, Shonda Rhimes’ new medical drama Off The Map too is being held for midseason. The plan for now is to premiere it later in the season behind Desperate Housewives, using the same launch pattern it successfully applied for Rhimes’ Grey’s Anatomy years ago, before moving the series to Thursdays. In preparation, ABC reduced the order for Housewives’ lead-out Brothers & Sisters to make room for Off The Map.
After a very unusual launch pattern this season, V will be held until November to give it time to amass episodes, and the goal is to run the series uninterrupted through the rest of the season.
The main goal for fall was “to shore up the 10 PM time slots, which are very important to our affiliates,” Bader said. Last fall, the network failed to take advantage of the decreased competition in the hour by the introduction of NBC’s The Jay Leno Show and establish new 10 PM dramas on Tuesday and Wednesday with The Forgotten and Eastwick. That led to stepped-up development of procedurals, with two new ones, cop drama Detroit 1-8-7 and legal drama The Whole Truth slotted in those periods for fall.
Overall, ABC stuck closely to its scheduling template from last season, once again keeping Sunday and Monday intact, launching new dramas at 10 PM on Tuesday and Wednesday and 8 PM on Thursday and going for a lineup of a reality series/hourlong scripted series/20/20 on Friday. The only major change this year is putting drama No Ordinary Heroes on Tuesday at 8 PM (The network had a reality series, Shark Tank, in the slot last year, leading into the Dancing With the Stars result show.)
New superhero family drama No Ordinary Family starring Michael Chiklis (photo on right) should do fine going against Fox’s hot dramedy Glee on Tuesday, Bader said, noting that No Ordinary Family is a more mature drama with stronger male appeal.
Another new drama, My Generation, is stepping in for canceled FlashForward at 8 PM on Thursdays. Bader calls My Generation “a very big idea and very different show that can make noise and is very compatible with Grey’s.”
It’s interesting that Friday 8 PM is becoming the slot for feel-good reality for fall with ABC’s Secret Millionaire (formerly a Fox series) and NBC’s School Pride. Once again, ABC is opting for a scripted series at 9 PM on Fridays. Last year, it put Ugly Betty in the time period where is struggled mightily. This time, it’s new procedural Body of Proof starring Dana Delany. While Ugly Betty was younger-skewing, targeting adults 18-34, Body of Proof’s target audience is women 35+, making it “much more appropriate for Friday night,” Bader said. “It has a very similar profile to the CBS shows on the night, and they have faded.”

If they plan on putting Body of Proof on Friday nights, Dana Delaney will be back on Wisteria Lane in no time.
For Friday night being the death slot, it seems like the networks are placing shows there they did not like but did not want to ax during the pilot stage to appease their big name stars the have in them. …. or maybe they are trying to re-invent Friday nights like they were years ago. Especially with TiVo and DVR now it doesn’t matter when a show is scheduled.
I think if a show can do well on Friday nights it will be Body of Evidence. It won’t do stellar but I can see it anchoring the night for ABC. Glad to see a plan for V.
Matthew Perry is a huge tv star who will have huge opening numbers. If Mr. Sunshine was any good, it’d be on the schedule on Wednesday nights at 8:30. Instead, they’re going with a multicam on a single cam comedy night. I’m thinking ABC is planning on doing some “creative tinkering”.
No ‘Shark Tank’? I don’t get it. The show must have been one of the cheapest to produce and it is a hoot. Maybe Burnett can sell it to somebody else. Hope so.
What happened to Wright vs Wrong? Is it dead? I thought it was going to be a likely midseason pickup.

This is the schedule Castle built. Boring, by-the-numbers series hoping to siphon off some CBS viewers. That their head of programming said the most serious discussions they had were about pairing a Matthew Perry series with a Courtney Cox series shows the level of excitement this line up will bring.
Do u think ABC will now pick up Christine and ghost Whisperer the latter would do great for ABC on fridays
If ABC are going to hold V until as late as November, then why not just leave it until Jan 2011 and then have it run completely straight through. If its premieres in Nov, its going to get yanked off late Dec for the hols, better to start in in Jan and run it truly without interuption then.
I think Off The Map will be okay in midseason, they did the same to Grey’s Anatomy first season and look where we are. Only problem is that I’ll have to wait more for the show (
I am happy to see V is back next Novmeber, I was in high school when the orginal V came out and LOVED IT. I was not so sure about this remake, but it has been done very well. I feel they stayed ture to V w/o copying and making it there own.
Thank you
Wow, it seems like at least 90% of the shows I start getting into get canned after a season or two. FlashForward is no different. I really started liking it and now its gone. I understand the business aspect of it so, objections aside, it had its time. The only problem I have with the new shows announced by ABC is Shonda Rhimes’s new medical drama Off the Map. Really, ABC, They already have Grey’s and Private Practice, how many medical dramas do you need. Its starting to look like “medical dramas” is all that Rhimes knows how to do. Please, ABC, originality is welcomed.
I just wish the networks would allow a show time to succeed before yanking it off the air. Giving a show 4 or 5 episodes, then having those episodes shown at different times, days etc so that a viewer never knows when it will be on, is tantamount to not giving it a chance at all. I liked it when new shows came on in September and ran on the same night, same time until reruns (or summer replacements) came on in June.
Even the top rated shows’ ratings have to be affected by the way they are bumped around for this or that miscellaneous programming or “reality show” that runs for several weeks in the middle of a season. Fans don’t know when to watch their favorite shows or if, after viewing 2 new episodes, the next 3 will be reruns, sometimes even from a prior season. It’s incredible that there is any fan loyalty to shows at all when you have to hunt to find your show every week.
Never thought I would feel for V’s Anna, as she has been a stone-cold witch! The season finale left you wanting more and can’t wait for it to begin again.
Regarding other series, you have to wonder why TV execs seem to relish shooting themselves in the foot over and over again. I have given up trying to figure them out….just very sad that too many shows I have enjoyed are now gone.
I have enjoyed V a lot. I remember watching the original V as a teenager. (Whatever happened to Marc Singer anyway?) The character development has been quite interesting. I like how Anna began to succumb to human emotion at the end. The actress in that role has been terrific. Looking forward to next season.
CBS should pick up flash foward.
