Jamie Foxx is mentoring the Top Four contestants on American Idol tonight amidst persistent chatter that he is being considered for the soon-to-be-vacated judge’s chair of Simon Cowell.
The Foxx rumor first surfaced in January when the actor/R&B singer was quoted as saying “I would love to do it, but I don’t think I would be able to do it.” It was later refuted by his publicist. But Foxx’s name continues to be mentioned as being on the wish list, along with Elton John and other A-listers. And Foxx obviously has a soft spot for Idol, returning as a mentor this year after doing it last season for the Top Five. Back then, he showed good instincts for picking the winner, gushing about then-dark horse Kris Allen.
Another Idol mentor this season, Harry Connick Jr. also made a strong case for himself as a potential Cowell replacement. In addition to the guessing game over Cowell’s replacement on Idol, there was also a lot of speculation about Cowell’s choice to judge alongside himself on his upcoming Fox series The X Factor. British papers quote a close confidant of Cowell as saying that Mariah Carey is being considered for the job. The singer certainly has an “in” with Cowell — her husband Nick Cannon hosts Cowell’s NBC show America’s Got Talent.
And, in yet more Idol-related news, Thomas Benson CFO of CKX, parent of Idol, said on an earnings call today that he expects negotiations with Fox for a multi-year renewal of Idol to conclude in the next few months. “We would all be stunned if Fox walked away,” he said. “That would be an economic suicide.”

The only reasonable replacement for Simon Cowell is Harry Connick Jr.
Simon leaving will devastate the show but Jamie Foxx trying to replace him will absolutely bury it. If Foxx assumes that role I won’t be watching the show next season. I agree that Harry Connick, Jr. would be a great choice but no one can actually replace Simon!
“The next few months”?
In January Robert Sillerman was saying a long term deal was expected by the end of the month! What on earth is going on at that company these days?!

FOX need to get this one right, Ellen hasn’t really worked out but if she had been a big hit then it might have taken the pressure off. Then again, they might not care if they believe that The X Factor is the future.
110% agree with this about Ellen. LOVE, respect, appreciate Ellen on many levels, but she’s a host not a judge. It doesn’t work. It pains me to say this about Ellen on Idol – it also pains me to admit… I kinda miss the KraZy a little bit. Bring back Paula. Of course, w/out Cowell next year, probably no point to that as that was half the fun. Fox has a big decision to make. Why in the world would Jamie Foxx take that on? Makes more sense where Harry CJ is at at the moment.
It’s kind of hard to mentor a bunch of karaoke singers. With the exception of Crystal, they all suck this season. FAIL!
Jamie Foxx has the egotism of Cowell without the charm or perception. His constant preening and self-absorption while “mentoring” the contestants is annoying. I’m not a huge fan of Connick’s singing, but he would be a good choice — funny and perceptive with obvious musical chops.
Good point. Foxx did seem full of himself. Like how he was getting in their faces and those HORRIBLE T-shirts. At least Connick has a sense of humor, and a humility about himself, with good constructive criticism.
I just don’t get the whole Jamie Foxx musical entertainer thing. What all of a sudden he’s a professional musician because he portrayed Ray Charles in a movie?????? I guess that makes Tom Hanks a fully qualified astronaut.
Jamie Foxx is now desperate for a job, any job!!! He’d take “Glee” if they offered it!!!! How embarrassing, the Oscar curse strikes again!!!
Chris Isaak should be the new Idol judge. He is funny, smart, and a brilliant musician!!! Ellen has to go though!!!!
Ellen is terrible, but life is definitely too short to have to listen to Jamie Foxx pontificating every week.
I think a good replacement would be the lead singer of IRON MAIDEN, Bruce Dickinson. The guy can sing and hes from the United Kingdom, it was just a thought.
Honestly, without looking it up, can you name 2 Jamie Foxx songs? I can’t name one and I work in the music industry. I mean he’s talented and everything but seems to me not that accomplished in the music biz, am I wrong?. But I haven’t watched one episode of idol this season, I wish it would go away, not sure why I’m commenting.
The only reasonable replacement for Simon Cowell is DAVID FOSTER.
Two things: Idol is on its last legs. The genre is old. Next, Foxx was an Affirmative Action-type pick from the PC-crazed Oscars. He’s basically a skit actor that got lucky.
Agree 100%.
Foxx seemed incredibly uncomfortable, as if he’s never seen the show, or maybe he didn’t understand his role? Whatever, bad move Fox & Foxx.
foxx is a no-talent narcissist. if it weren’t for a p.c. crowd desperate to kiss some black butt, his ‘career’ would have been over years ago, if it would have ever taken off at all. his only claim to fame was being cast in ‘ray’ which is one of the corniest, lamest biopics ever..and his acting skills consisted of wearing shades, shaking his head from side to side, and lip-synching to ray charles records. his ego exploded after winning undeserved accolades and, ever since, he seems to think that he’s some sort of musical genius..puh-leeze.
not that any of this matters because ‘idol’ has all but committed suicide this season.. it won’t be around very much longer anyway.
How to sink a listing ship?
Why not Perez Hilton? That should make the ratings plunge even further and we can all be put out of our
misery by the end of next season. (It’s not like poor
Perez hasn’t been begging for the seat.)
Gross, I hope not. I watched his last music hit video Blame It over and over again — just loved the music — until I truly got its intent. Then I went and read the lyrics. What a downer. Kind of got a glimpse into a truly depraved subculture. Keeping everyone messed up to justify being that messed up. Yeah, just not one thing uplifting about it. And “Blame it on the a-a-alcohol.” Please, please, please. I like Idol. I even like Jamie Foxx as an actor and a musician. But if “Blame It” is where his mind and actions are at, I’m going to excuse him from the dinner table and have him go to his room until he can find something a little more positive to contribute.
Didnt J. Foxx and his radio friends call someone a stupid little white b&%$h. Was it miley cyrus? whatever, doesnt that disqualify you from mentoring kids.
Bottom line is I give the show one more season. Has almost come to the point where there is no reason to watch.
Please, people. I don’t know that I would like Jaime Foxx on AI, but at least get your facts straight, and stop playing your racist cards. Foxx has mentored on idol for two years in a row. He attended United States International University where he studied Classical music. He has had several top ten songs. He is definitely more qualified than Ellen. Had I come on and said he isn’t getting a chance because of his color, some creep would have been quick to say that I was playing the race card. Well, now I can say that most of the postings have been from racists idiots who don’t have a clue of what they’re talking about. Next time, Wikipedia. It’ll save you from looking like a jerk.
