Publisher Little, Brown tells me Stephenie Meyer’s novella “for the fans” has sold 226,589 copies so far in the UK. Waterstones, the largest bookshop chain, expects it to be the biggest-selling book of the year.
The £11:99 ($17.8) Twilight novella is mostly selling at less than half price, mostly due to heavy supermarket discounting. What’s remarkable is that you can read The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner for free on Meyer’s website until midnight on July 5. But then Meyer turns everything she touches into witchy gold, from movies to books to internet traffic. The Twilight Saga has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide, translated into nearly 50 languages.

An interesting note – independent bookstores are reporting pathetic sales for this title. Couple of factors – all the chains are running at 40+% off retail and indies can’t do that so again another stab in the heart of small bookstores. Second, and more importantly, the book is a rip off and indies aren’t supporting it. The book has above normal font size and 1 inch margins to try to hide the fact that there is less than 100 actual pages of text for 14 bucks? Anyone can make a bestseller with an established fan base of prepubescent girls and soccer moms, it doesn’t mean it has anything remotely close to quality or style.
Meyer is the new Oprah. How does she do it?
I love the books. I can see why she’s a bestseller. And Host is even better. Amazing book and I can’t wait for the movie.
And you can read Bree Tanner for free for the month of June up at Meyer’s website.
