EXCLUSIVE: A third ABC comedy pilot is getting a reshoot for midseason consideration. The network has ordered a new pilot for the single-camera half-hour How to Be a Better American. Written by Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley and produced by ABC Studios, the project centers on a father who embarks on a journey to be a better person and drags along his family kicking and screaming. It is not clear which actors from the original cast will be staying but a major recasting is expected. The two other ABC comedy pilots that have received new pilot production orders for midseason consideration are the Debra Messing starrer Wright vs. Wrong and Awkward Situations For Men, starring British writer/on-air personality Danny Wallace. Meanwhile, final resolution on The New Adventures of Old Christine‘s attempt to move to ABC is expected shortly but things don’t look good. On the drama side, the network has put five scripts on fast track for summer pilot orders: Charlie’s Angels, Department Zero, Behind the Blue, Ghostworld and Island Of Women. Additionally, ABC has ordered six additional scripts for Edgar Floats.

Any news about Old Christine?
It’s nice to see ABC going back to the drawing board when they feel they have a good concept for a show, but just didn’t have the right execution the first time around. Better to do it in the pilot stage than to try to get a train back on the tracks once it’s on the air.
This is going WAY back, but I know one of ABC’s biggest hits of all time, Three’s Company, didn’t make it to air until the THIRD pilot. I’d be curious to know of other hits from the past shot more than one pilot before making it to air.
re: reshooting these comedy pilots
waste. of. time.
changing the cast isn’t going to fix the terrible script.
Any idea when ABC might decide on EDGAR? Reading some twitter reviews it seems some esteemed TV pundits think its one of the best pilots out of every net. It certainly was one of the most liked scripts. Why wouldnt ABC just give it an order, even a short one of maybe 6 eps? THye have the procedural base covered so take a shot on a quirky but great show
Same guys who did This Little Piggy pilots on ABC and NBC. They are either blessed or cursed.
both scripts were really weak. they should be glad they’re working.
both scripts are great which is WHY they are still working.
working is great, which is why they are both.
I saw a test screening of Awkward Situations and it really sets a new standard for terrible sitcoms, very obvious gags and a premise that is straining harder than a constipated man on day five
how long did you beat out that “constipated man” joke??? It’s genius!!! Seriously, ABC should obviously give you a sitcom because you’re so briliant!!! Oh boy…you sir are a comic god and no doubt now the town will take notice. I know I will be laughing and retelling that one all day!!!
Douche.
lol nerve touched
seriously though, the pilot you worked so hard on sucked horribly
I’ve read from Futon Critic that said IT TAKES A VILLAGE while not outstanding was a solid show that could have work well with ABC’s brand family sitcom brand. I hope ABC gives this show another shot. The Middle and more importantly The Big Bang Theory was also a failure on its first try but got picked up the next season.
Why are you shilling for It Takes A Village? Pilot reads like two day old Ralphs beans spread on top of a warmed over Mission brand tortilla. It’s the pilot’s second time around the block, and both times it’s been a Pass Avenue. Move on with your life. ABC has.
Can you give us another update on “Our Show”? Is it still in play with NBC or with Syfy, as you predicted?
This won’t last 4 episodes
some pilot re-shoots have worked in the past. but it tells you how sorry the state of ABC’s comedy development and comedy in general is in. i don’t know about how to be a better american, but awkward situations was lousy and wright vs. wrong was terrible as well.
ABC has lost its development mojo. They are so burnt out and scared. In comedy and drama. I think it is ABC-P that is the bigger problem. The team over there is not made up of the sharpest tools in the shed. They don’t know how to develop because they are network types in studio jobs.
WBTV knows how to develop because they aren’t distracted by being beholden from the first moment a writer pitches an idea to a network.
ABC-P execs are all like characters out of the Jake Kasdan film, THE TV SET.
I’d really like to see actress Missi Pyle stay in that “better american” show. She’s incredible… and has done everything!
