For a second time in its run, Fox’s American Idol is expanding its eligibility age range. After stretching the upper age limit from 24 to 28 after the first 3 seasons, the Fox talent competition is now lowering the minimum age required from 16 to 15. Clearly, this is tied to the enormous popularity of younger singers like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus and to the importance of younger teen and tween girls who are a powerful Idol demographic and have gotten behind younger contestants like David Archuleta and Aaron Kelly in the past. Additionally, despite talk that Idol may move back auditions this year, in part to accommodate its own talent search for a new judger to replace Simon Cowell, Fox’s announcement this morning said auditions will kick off July 17 in Nashville, TN.

How about RAISING the age limit to say, 60 or higher? Where’s the Justice Dept when you really need them? Can you say, “age discrimination lawsuit”?
Why is “Idol” lowering it’s age limit?
Two words: Justin Bieber.
And two more words: Miley Cyrus.
Personally, I’d like to see “Idol Plus” spun-off from “American Idol”. On “Idol Plus”, contestants would be 29 or older. It would have the same host, format, and judges as “American Idol”.
With the same judges, host and format, auditions for the two shows could be held together. If you’re between 15 and 28, you’d audition for “Amercian Idol”. If you’re 29 or older, you’d audition for “Idol Plus”.
I believe there needs to be a forum for those beyond the age of 29 to exhibit their vocal talent and have a true opportunity to make their dreams come true.
why not lower the age limit to twelve and older other younger people have dreams that they want to persue. look at mindless behavior and jaquan harris and even miley cyrus look how early they started
I totally agree! “American Idol” age 16-28 and “American Idol Plus” 28 and older! I am 34 and been told many times to audition for American Idol! I would love to fulfill this dream!!! “American Idol Plus” would allow me to do this! Please consider this!
