EXCLUSIVE: Amy Ryan is set to co-star opposite Gabriel Byrne on the upcoming third season of the HBO drama In Treatment. The series, based on an Israeli format, centers on Dr. Paul Weston (Byrne), a psychotherapist, and his weekly sessions with patients. Ryan will play Paul’s new therapist. In the first two seasons, he was seeing his clinical supervisor, mentor and psychotherapist Gina, played by Dianne Wiest, who is departing the show (She earned two Emmy nominations for the role and won in 2008). Oscar-nominated Ryan joins another high-profile new addition to the cast of In Treatment next season, Debra Winger, who will play one of Paul’s patients, a formerly big star in an anxiety crisis about her career. This marks Ryan’s return to HBO where she co-starred on The Wire. Gersh-repped Ryan, who also recurred on The Office, most recently co-starred opposite Matt Damon in Green Zone.

Season Finale Of CBS’ ‘Mike & Molly’

Dianne Wiest was wonderful, but Amy Ryan being younger we can imagine some transfers, it should be interesting! Also the two first seasons were basically translations of the israeli show, now we’ll know if it can get as interesting with american writers. Can’t wait!
I AM SADDENED BY THE NEWS THAT PAUL WILL NOT HAVE DIANNE AS A POSSIBLE LOVE INTEREST. I THINK WIEST IS A WONDERFUL ACTRESS. I SURELY HOPE SHE REPRISES HER ROLE SOON.
GABRIEL BYRNE YOU ARE A SPECIAL SPECIAL MAN. DELIGHTED YOU ARE WILLING TO CONTINUE WITH THE SHOW PUTTING IN INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCES THAT MUST BE VERY DEMANDING DAY AFTER DAY. I HOPE YOU KNOW THAT THE VIEWING AUDIENCE IS THRILLED THAT YOU ARE WILLING TO DO THIS. YOU ARE THE ONE WHO TOILS FOR OUR DELIGHT. THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH. IT IS A PLEASURE TO WATCH YOU ON SCREEN.
Excellent news! I didn’t think I could get excited about an ‘In Treatment’ without Dianne Wiest, but Amy Ryan is such a wonderful, adept performer. I’m glad they didn’t try to “replace” Wiest and are going for an entirely new character instead.
Nice casting.
DAMN! Does this mean Michael Scott’s one true love is not returning to The Office this season as Kathy Bates hinted she might in the finale?
I love her! Wonder if she will go back on The Office?
I hope she will still have time to return to The Office as Holly – they just set that up brilliantly in the season finale
As long as she has her schedule cleared for next season’s series finale of The Office.
With Steve Carell leaving the show, you know they’ll see him off with “Holly.”
Even without Steve Carell, I doubt that NBC will end the show after next season. They’ll try and bring in a big name like Steven Colbert or John Lithgow to replace him.
she needs to return to the office, especially if this is micheal’s last season!
Great casting choice! Amy is way underrated!
Great actress. Loved her in The Office. Hope she returns. In Treatment is HBO’s best show, after True Blood. I love how the actors get to peel back their characters, week after week. It’s really an actors’ show.
Leave it to HBO to come up with a great casting choice for a great series. It is a fantastic channel with so many strong shows that I enjoy such as “Rome,” “True Blood,” “In Treatment,” and “Big Love,” plus great documentaries
Thanks, HBO publicity department.
I look so forward to te return of “In Treatment”. It will be interesting to see if American writers will do as excellent job as the Israeli. I like the therphy base of the show; I do hope the new writers remember this.
I hope that putting in a younger, beautiful replacement is NOT going to result in the typical American plot of old man and young girl bull crap. I hope the new writers will not do the typical American hubris super hero type of stuff. I loved the original vulnerabilities of the previous seasons. I’ll give the new season a shot, but I sure hope the original concept remains true and not all that “fake, plastic hoopla”, that’s so typical of American programming.
Did the actress that plays the daughter-in-law of the math professor from India this season play a patient working as an attorney in an earlier season?
The daughter-in-law of the Season 3 math professor from India (the character’s name is Sunil; the daughter-in-law’s character is Julia) is NOT the actress who played the attorney patient (character’s name was Mia, played by Hope Davis). Different actress. Different character. Maybe you figured that out already.
I don’t agree with previous comments. like amy ryan but don’t like the new character, adele. somehow she doesnt seem real. and doesnt look like 37. (sorry amy) . but also don’t like wendy, the little we have seen of her, doesn’t seem like paul would hook up with that type person (the little who know of her thru paul’s comments and a small scene with her.)
will really miss gina. have watched paul and gina episodes so many times, amazing acting. also miss paul’s wife who also is a great actor hope she in some future scenes..really like debra winger in the show so far.
My first encounter with In Treatment was casual – I was cooking and not paying much attention. A few weeks later, I sat down and really watched it. It has become my favorite show. Gabriel is excellent and you like him immediately. I fell right “in” to the Indian man,
disliking him first and now feel his pain! I hope Adele turns out
to hold her own and not fall for her patient. I had to watch a few minutes to figure out it was Debra Winger sitting there. She is sure playing an actress, as in over-acting. It is the best series out there this year. It’s so serious and yet, touching. Love it!
I agree with Adam about Amy Ryan’s character. Great writing, played beautifully by Amy. I am “un-jaded” because I don’t watch The Office. Look forward to more!!!
Amy Ryan and Irrfan Khan are SENSATIONAL as Sunil and Adele.
It looks like Paul’s relationship with Adele is really developing…can’t wait to see what happens!
And Gabriel…..you are the BEST!!!! I admire your talent and commitment to this challenging series. Please keep up this extrordinary piece of work.
I think that Amy Ryan’s character Adele is sensational. I don’t know how any man could sit in that room and bare his soul to her and not fall in love with her. I know I have
