Lifetime is moving forward with plans for an Army Wives spinoff. The network has ordered a pilot for the project that will air as an episode of the drama’s current fourth season and has cast Gabrielle Union to star in it opposite Brigid Brannagh.
In the planted spinoff, penned by Army Wives writers Bruce Zimmerman and T.D. Mitchell, the show’s character Pamela Moran (Brannagh), recently divorced from her Delta Force soldier husband, returns to her former career as a police officer and becomes a detective for the Atlanta PD. Union will play the spinoff’s other lead, Pamela’s partner, Detective Gina Holt of the Atlanta Major Crimes division. Army Wives producers ABC Studios and studio-based Mark Gordon Co. are also behind the spinoff.
Army Wives launched its fourth season in April with 3.3 million viewers, the series’ lowest-rated season premiere. Season-to-date, the ensemble drama starring Kim Delaney and Catherine Bell has averaged 3 million total viewers and still ranks as among the top cable draws in the women’s demographics.
The spinoff had been in development for awhile. Last September, a “Who Should Get Their Own Army Wives Spin-Off Show’” survey was posted on Lifetime’s Army Wives blog. Pamela was one of the most popular choices.
Union most recently co-starred on ABC’s Flash Forward this past season.

Congratulations Gabrielle. Not only a terrific person, but a fine actress.
Thank you.
“Embedded Pilot” like the term…
hopefully this pilot has better luck than other pilots Union has attached herself to in the past, cough cough Body Politic.
I’d actually prefer Body Politic to get a shot over an Army Wives spin-off… Jay Hernandez, anyone?
I love Brigid Brannagh and hope this Pilot works for her. Obviously the divorce will no longer make her character relevant on the show.
Gabby is one of the most under rated actresses on the screen. I never got why she never became an A-list actress.
I agree with you completely!
how can I put this she has a very neasty attitude especially toward her family basically KARMA
I agree she is an amazing actress. Success long overdue
I know that Brigid Brannagh will do just wonderful. She is the best one on Army Wives. We all think that she is just great and wish her all the luck in the world.
Gabrielle is soooo boring to watch. Pamela will make her look good cause Ms. Union can not carry a lead which is why she never became an A-list actress. She can’t act!! Lets not forget she’s never taken an acting class in her life. She just got lucky.
She is not boring darling, u dnt knw what u saying
Union is the tiptop woman in life, we all have 2 congrats her!
As long as they keep Wendy D.
As long as they keep Wendy D.
No, she’s boring. With a cap B. And I enjoy AW. I give this show three months before they cancel it. Lifetime should bring back The Division!!! Now that was a great show with a strong female ensemble and of course the not yet discovered Jon Hamm!!!!
have watched army wives since beginning. used to be exciting and now becoming boring. havent been happy the last few episodes. and now you tell me pamela is leaving. i hope some good things are getting ready to happen.didnt like the way pamelas divorce went, and all the sudden 6months have past!!! please come up with something good, love the characters!!!
i wasnt happy with the 6 months either…but i found out the reason for it is cause the one that plays denise was pregnant in real life too and i guess instead of hiding it, they included it.
I cant wait for this to air!! I love brigid brannagh. she is the best character in armywives. i really hope she stays on the show. i know the divorce was a bad thing to add on the show but i still hope to see pamela on the show. i hope this is a great new show is good even though im not a big fan of these types of show! good luck
What is army wives going to be with out pamela? Im bummed they are taking her off the show!
I don’t know how you are saying that. The Pamela character is THE most boring of all the ladies. And, to boot, she has the sorriest excuse for a husband–seems to care more about his career than his family. Any of the other ladies’ characters trump Brannagh’s boring Pamela. Whoever said Union cannot act is pretty close to being right (between looks and fine leading men, her career remains afloat). I see this spin-off crashing and burning before it gets off the tarmack.
Have been watching Army Wives since its onset. Will NOT miss a episode. When it can’t be helped thank goodness for the online capabilities to view missed episodes. This season has not been boring. Life changes and so must the lives of these people representing the brave spouses and soldiers who actually are out there for our country. Couldn’t believe the amazing Mather’s Day show, so much behind it. The tears just flowed. This show has given me a better understanding of what the families and soldiers must live through for USA. Keep up the excellent program, acting and symbolism. As a result of this program, I shake the hand to thank every soldier I meet on our streets.
I LOVE Pamela: In the beginning, I thought her character was a little off (and a very dramatic growth from the pilot – a little fast, I thought, but ultimately understandable) but in the end, hers was the most modern plotline. I was actually looking forward to this development as divorce in the Service is common (they have important issues to juggle – like how, when divorced, do they take care of his sudden disappearances?) and they well established even prior to her research that you lose everything when you divorce, and usually your Army Wives’ friends (as well as the kids’ army friends, which are an important support group), so I was looking forward to seeing the struggles to stay with the group.
Also, her husband is not a jerk who puts his family last. Throughout the series they established that love was not the problem. Previously, you didn’t have to worry about juggling career and family because your wife took care of it (and, in the service, often still is that way out of necessity) but now that people juggle, he was having problems because he kept telling himself “we just have to make it over this hump, then I’ll have the career established transitioning into a mostly desk job and I can make it up to my family.” The truth of life is that even when something, like family, is your priority that doesn’t mean you can focus on it because maintaining that priority is dependent on a million other factors. He thought he had time to do this long-term decision when he didn’t (because they needed him then). He also made the classic man mistake of not realizing that when women say they’re leaving, they already have one foot out the door (mentally/emotionally).
But if they move Pamela to Atlanta, do the kids come? They’re just going to forget the real issues that this show tries to demonstrate. She’ll just a divorced Mom instead of an Army Ex-Wife (which is different from an Ex-”Army Wife”). This is terrible!
You stated that the the question between Pamela and chase was never a lack of love, and you are right but the very first episodes of this show had to do with the fact that Pamela and Chase were not seeing eye to eye on the issues of their marriage. If you remember the one thing that brought everyone together was the dilivery of twins at the Hump bar. The twins that Pamela were carrying as a surrougate to pay off the many debts that Chase had incurred by over spending.
I am really disappointed that Pamela will be leaving the show and agree with you that the the dynamic of the show will change because of it. The story Line that I would like to see For Pamela and Chase is yes Pamela goes back to work out of necessity because of the divorce and yes Chase realizes that he could have been a better husband and father by spending quality time with them when he could instead of hanging with the guys but at the same time I would have liked them to both realize that the blame was equaly shared and that by Chase spending more time with the family and Pamela persueing her dreams of being a police officer that this marriage is still salvagable, more so now than ever.
I have been watching since the beginning and love this show. Now it looks like it is going to do what they all do – start getting rid of the original actors. I hated the divorce between Pamela and Chase. I’ve been hoping they would reconcile. I love Chase, but he needed to get his priorities in order, so this week he comes to Pamaela and says that very thing. I was so excited, now it looks like Pamela is still going to leave. I wish she would get off the police force. Liked the radio program she did. It suited her. I hate this police job of hers. Her new friend should go on and do her thing and leave Pamela alone. If she turns Chase down, I will probably move on.
Please – no more Jill Biden. Leave the politics out. We don’t care about JB!
Army wives is the best show on television! I love all the characters but in my opinion the most enjoyable character is Roxy.
I bet this means Chase dies and she’s off on to new horizons.. Her character is strong and I hope it can continue on another series.. I’ve been a fan since the beginning, through highs and lows and still concider it among the few TV series I actually watch and enjoy…
Is this article a spoiler for the main Army Wives show? If Pamela is joining this cast then we know she takes the job for the Atlanta PD
I keep reading how one character is the only good one and others are boring. Any GREAT SHOW has characters that have a true interactive chemistry. Each character makes the other characters look better because of their ability to read each other and react to each other in a believable way while still following a script. It is only when this happens that the characters begin to seem “real” and acquire a huge audience that follows the show with dedication. All the characters in Army Wives have contributed to the shows success!
Really sorry to see “Pamela” leaving Army Wives. The ensemble was so perfect that it is hard to understand why writers and producers feel the need to change things. And the friendship between “Roxy” and Pamela was so real. I wish Brigid luck with her new show and I hope the producers are leaving the door open at Army Wives for her return if things don’t work out. Difficult for new shows to catch on these days.
I love Army Wives, would be much better if new episodes were not so far apart. Tend to lose interest with shows that have a couple episodes then go off the air for months. Good luck with new show
The reason this season of Army Wives did not get high numbers was because it was not advertised!! Last season it was all over ABC!! If you let people know….they will come! I love this show and look forward to the spin off!!!!
