EXCLUSIVE: Fox’s drama pilot Breakout Kings may break out of the rejected pilots heap. I hear that 20th TV, which produced Breakout Kings with Chernin Entertainment, is in preliminary talks with A&E about possibly taking in the project.
The pilot, about a team of U.S. marshals and a group of convicts who race against the clock to apprehend escaped prisoners, was a sentimental favorite of many industry insiders this season and became hot after a great early studio testing. It was one of Fox’s top three hourlong pilots but ultimately missed the cut when the network opted to go with only two new drama series, Lonestar and Ride-Along, and keep both of its bubble dramas, Lie To Me and Human Target.
20th immediately sent out the pilot, written by Matt Olmstead and Nick Santora and directed by Gavin Hood, to a number of broadcast and cable networks.
At A&E, Breakout Kings would fit into the character-driven procedural direction the channel is taking with the upcoming cop drama The Glades, which also is male-centered. Breakout Kings stars Laz Alonso, Domenick Lombardozzi, Malcolm Goodwin, Jimmi Simpson, Brooke Nevin and Nicole Steinwedell.

I think this show would do well on A&E. I hope they take it.
Lie to Me is still on the air? I thought that was cancelled months ago.
This is cool. Loved this pilot and couldnt believe Fox didnt put it on the air.
Hi, where did u see the piolt? i wanna watch it?
Agreed. The pilot was a lot of fun. Great cast, great concept… Lets hope A&E has enough sense to recognize a hit when they see one.
A&E? I thought TNT would have jumped at this first.
The pilot was awesome. A&E will be poised to be the next scripted cable powerhouse. Look out USA Network.
Serious question.
Will A&E give a big enough budget to be successful. There’s no real precedent here.
I heard good things about it and would like to see it get a chance.
Never understood how Fox missed out on this one. Great news for A&E.
Excellent analysis, Lourdes. USA – of all networks – should fear A&E. Why, if A&E can quintuple their viewership, they’ll bump off the dozen cable channels that currently separate them from USA.
Look out, number one rated cable network. The old people channel mulling a show based on the well established prison-escape-of-the-week franchise is on your tail!
Whoa… i think the guy above me works on Burn Notice or something. I think A&E should do scripted material and this show sounds like it’s in the wheelhouse of the network. USA is popular. So is Hannah Montana and Deal or No Deal. USA welcomes their characters, but then it puts them through it’s sausage-grinder of blandness which spits out crap like ‘Royal Pains’. Which is a USA “hit”. Can’t wait to see that show lauded in the annals of tv history. Jeez. I don’t know where that tangent came from… I was just thrown off by someone so angrily defending a network that can be only be tolerated by millions of exhausted housewives.
Jimmi Simpson, Jimmi Simpson, Jimmi Simpson!!!!!
jimmi simpson and domenick lombardozzi will become big actors
Good for Fox studios and Chernin. Wish more studios had the guts to do this. It takes a big, powerful producer on a show to get this done. Usually with a big overall deal.
Warners only did it for Southland because they had a big producer who has made them a lot of money previously (ER) pushing them. Otherwise that WB team never tries to reposition material cause they want to keep in good graces with the network that turned down their show. A real weakness in their business strategy.
Savvy of A&E.
Good for A&E Tana J is one of the best in business
Yes, Tanna is terrific. Straight shooter, smart, great smile!
Yet another example of how cable programming is surpassing network tv.
Jimmi Simpson is always a pleasure to watch.. will make it big.
