A few actor developments that caught my eye this weekend…. Despite her frustration-filled weekend tweeting, I don’t believe Amanda Bynes is done with acting at age 24. Like most parents of now-college age kids, I endured hours of often insufferable Tollin-Robbins-produced Nickelodeon kid sketch shows. The charismatic Bynes, a regular in a bunch of those shows since age 10, always seemed the kid who’d best weather the rocky transition to adulthood and have a real career. She’ll be back, I predict…
Bruce Dern has signed for a role in the movie version of The Big Valley that starts shooting with Jessica Lange and Travis Fimmel next month. This comes at a time when Dern just signed a new deal to reprise in HBO’s Big Love, and as he, ex-wife Diane Ladd and daughter Laura Dern will get their stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in the same ceremony. Dern seemed to have reached his peak playing the heavy in such 70s films as Coming Home, Black Sunday and The Great Gatsby. But a good actor can remain one and it’s nice to see a Dern resurgence…After galvanizing the first season of the FX series Justified with a character that morphed from avowed enemy of Tim Olyphant’s federal marshall Raylan Givens, into a not entirely trustworthy wingman, Walton Goggins will spend his hiatus time shooting at extraterrestrials.
He’s joined the cast of the DreamWorks/Universal film Cowboys and Aliens, which shoots this summer with Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig starring. Goggins, who’ll also be seen shortly in Fox’s Predators, will then hopefully reprise his Boyd Crowder character, since Justified was renewed for a second season.

How dare you insult ALL THAT and THE AMANDA SHOW. Blasphemy Mr. Fleming, blasphemy.
Bynes is smart to take some time off. She is getting some sort of syndication money for WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU, and all the projects that she has been getting since the couple theatrical releases she had have been trash — I recall some movie she did about being stranded on a desert island going direct-to-ABC-Family / direct-to-video.
Hopefully she looks a little more mature five years from now and starts landing the good roles she deserves.
Amanda Bynes can’t go away fast enough and hopefully she’ll take Nick Cannon with her. All of the new cast members of All That were and continue to be horrible.
Love me some Amanda Bynes.
i can’t really name one member of all that who went on to have a hollywood career. the closest is nick cannon but that’s not saying much. here’s to disney for making stars
Nick Cannon is mad successful! Apparently you are judging on screen time in blockbusters, but I was shocked to see what all that man has going on.
I always wondered why Nickelodeon kids never became adult stars. I always found them much more charismatic and likable than Disney ones. Bynes and Cannon as well as Keenan Thompson were very talented comedic performers, but seemed to have picked poor projects with little guidance. Thompson at least has SNL and Cannon does produce a lot of shows for Nick. Bynes though is only 24 and has an Apatow film coming up so maybe she should take a break and come back fresh, looking for better parts than crappy rom-coms that she is in.
Miranda Cosgrove seems posed to become big though. Read an interview with her in EW and she seemed very down-to-earth and “EMBRACED” her audience, not trying to reject them like these Disney kids trying to be “adult.” She is being paid almost $300K an episode and has an album out though don’t know how that faired although I hear her song on the top 40 radio channels all the time.
Oh yeah, whatever happened to Drake Bell and Josh Parker kid? Just reminscing over my Nickelodeon days I guess:)
good to see Dern working again and doing something. A good actor if never likeable, thats probably what makes him good: he’s honest.
But Laura getting a Hollywood star? For what? Name recognition? Tabloid dominance in the early 90s? What were they thinking?
What? Blue Velvet, Mask, Wild at Heart, Rambling Rose, Jurassic Park, A Perfect World, Citizen RUth and October Sky as well as lots of other film and television roles. I don’t read the tabloids, so have no idea what you’re talking about, but her body of work speaks for itself.
I have despised Amanda Bynes since her debut on All That she was an unfunny hack whose one note was innocent-looking psychopath and she’s an unfunny hack now. There are lots more like her, but her true crime (industry-wise) is not aging well. If she’d grown up hot, she’d still have some semblance of a career, but alas. Can’t act, not funny, potato-face.
Time to start producing!
you seem like a pleasant human being.
Aw, thank you!
Great to see Walton getting his due. He never really got the credit he deserved on The Shield…his final season performance should have been recognized with at the very least an Emmy nod. Now he has turned a show around from what could have been a on-and-doner to something that looks like it has legs with his involvement. More features will come calling, lets not forget this guy is an Oscar winner…
100% agree. Go Walt!
I agree too. Glad to see the focus of these posts go off off Bynes and onto Walt. Can’t wait to until Predators comes out and what he does next!
Great for Dern and I agree with James M: Googins was in the end the best actor on “The Shield” and that’s saying a lot.
Amanda Bynes is actually quite lovable and fun to watch, even if the movies she’s been in were crap. Unfortunately she’s been put in the Disney-esque bracket, but that’s not where she fits. If she were to get the kind of QUALITY comedy/romcom roles that actresses like Amy Adams or Anna Kendrick gets, I think she could really shine.
Walton is the best. Here, here that this is just the beginning for him as a integral part of quality features…
I thought Amanda Bynes was quite good & sexy in Hairspray. I never saw any of her work prior to that, but she stood out in that film.
If she can walk away from this ridiculous business, good for her.
I, for one, think she has a future as a rom com leading lady if she chooses to hang in there. She’s way more likable than Heigl. Once somebody stops casting her to play innocent vapid blondes and allows her explore her more mature sexy side she could be a big star.
Who is Amanda Bynes?
amanda bynes played more characters in ‘the amanda show’ on nick than bruce dern has in his career
Bruce Dern is an amazing actor. Check out two classics: POSSE with Kirk Douglas (Dern is simply fantastic) and FAMILY PLOT (Hitchcock’s last movie) in which Dern is charismatic and loopy.
Often cast as a villain, Dern really does shine as a hero. I’d like to see him on TV. He’s still 100% leading man material.
As for Bynes, she’s not been able to find a leading lady role. She ought to write one herself! She’s got enough name recognition that if she keeps the budget down, she could make a “broad indie” movie. Funny or what have you.
Personally, I think she ought to do a detective thriller. Look up one of the writers from “Life” and put together something in that vein. Move away from funny, into tough. Why try and be Katherine Heigl when she can be her own Bruce Dern. I mean look at him. If you just saw him as a villain, you’d have no idea how really powerful and affecting he is in a hero role. But he is.
Bynes will never be the “Hollywood pretty” that Jennifer Grey tried to be, the Megan Foxes or the Katherine Heigls or the Jennifer Anistons. Why try?
It is a crying shame, however, just how bad roles for women in movies suck. We probably have as good a group of actresses now as we ever have, and the only opportunity they get is on TV. Which has more complex and multi-dimensional roles than wife, girlfriend, hooker, mother and victim.
As a non-entertainment industry ‘civilian,’ I usually leave actors alone if I see them in public, but when I saw Walton at LACMA with his wife, I had to tell him what a great job he did on The Shield (especially the last season), and what projects were next for him. A really humble & super nice guy. All he would tell me is a project for F/X (which was “Justified”), of which I’ve become a big fan. Can’t wait to see him stretch himself even further into new roles.
Good to see Walton Goggins getting some attention! He was exceptional in The Shield, saddled with the difficult task of making a deeply unlikeable character both believable and entertaining to watch.
Amanda is one of the few natural movie talents of the last ten years. She’s got a natural sweetness that was displayed prominently in a movie that, unfortunately, no one went to see, Sidney White. She was also great in What a Girl Wants and Hairspray. If she needs time off let her take it. If she quits it will be our loss.
I like Amanda Bynes and though I didn’t see the Nick shows I did like “What I Like About You”.
As shallow as it sounds I think she was a better actress with dark hair. She seems not to be able to call a cab these days as a blonde.
I think Amanda is just frustrated by her career right now. On Twitter she seemed very excited about getting a part in “Hall Pass,” but then that fell through.
If Walton Goggins doesn’t get a Supporting Actor Emmy nom then there is no God.
For Justified, that is.
For a stunning display of range, watch Walton Goggins in “The Apostle,” if you haven’t already seen it. It’s a terrific performance – so real, so subtle. Then, when you see his work in “The Shield,” the difference is so shocking.
As for Bruce Dern, it’s great to see that he’s still in demand – but a movie version of “Big Valley”??? Why is this necessary in life? Who’s going to star in the movie version of “Hello Larry”?
As for Dern’s rather sinister reputation, he used to describe his onscreen persona by saying, “I’m the one who ate the baby.” But, he was so good at it!
