20th Century Fox confirmed today that the studio is taking yet another crack at remaking the 1947 Danny Kaye classic daydreamer comedy The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, with Gore Verbinski at the helm. It’s good to see Verbinski on a big film after he jumped off the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise to direct Bioshock and then that project didn’t happen. But Verbinski is following in the footsteps of a spectacular crop of directors and stars who never cracked the remake, in about 22 years of trying. That includes directors Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Mark Waters, with Jim Carrey (several times), Owen Wilson, Mike Myers and Sacha Baron Cohen. Let’s see what Gore and screenwriter Steve Conrad come up with as they tackle an adaptation of the James Thurber story.

No
A: No.
Please please please stop destroying my childhood, Hollywood. You already killed “Speed Racer,” “Underdog,” “The Prisoner…” What’s next? “Winky Dink and You?”
It’s been offered to Zach Galafianakis
If you crack it, it will break.
That is my favorite Danny Kaye film (and I am the biggest Danny Kaye fan ever) and it should not be remade. It is a classic and no one can top Danny Kaye. Come up with original ideas – YEESH.
might we mention James Thurber?
Gore Verbinski is perfect for this. He has such a great light comic touch…
Of course, now it will have to be “Walter Mitty 3D”. Maybe Gore can work in some vampires, you know, for the kiddos.
How else will this be ruined? Jonas Brothers do the “love theme”, happy meal tie-ins, and yet another comeback role for Tom Cruise.
Wait, maybe I should stop here. I am being sarcastic but someone in H’wood will take this seriously!
AFR. Bletch. The early 20th century resonates sooo well with today’s youth. Hows about a remake of _The Glen Miller Story_ while we are at it? Or _The Spirit of St. Louis_? Box office gold! It’s a dang shame that Casablanca remake with David Soul never got off the ground: It would be ripe for a remake about now.
The studios always tend to over-complicate the “re-development” process for the ideas that succeed because of their elegant simplicity.
Back away from the Mitty with your hands where I can see them.
No.
(The Casablanca movie with David Soul was a remake? Of what?)
I was certain that Diane English’s remake of The Women, would prove the ultimate lesson in why classic movies should not be remade. What a ridiculous idea.
