Cineworld is extending its lead in 3D digital. About half of the UK exhibitor’s screens will be 3D within three years. At present 33% of its 790 screens are digital. Cineworld has just announced a £30 million ($44 million) initiative with technology company Arts Alliance Media, rolling out across all of its 77 cinemas. AAM will collect virtual print fees from distributors, helping to repay Cineworld’s £40 million total investment.
AAM has virtual print-fee agreements in place with five of the Hollywood majors. It services VPF arrangements with 7,500 screens in Europe. The company operates the UK Film Council Digital Screen Network, so it has installed and maintains screens for nearly every UK exhibitor – multiplexes and independents alike. The technology company also has a deal with UK operator Reel Cinemas to digitise all 60 of its screens.
Cineworld posted a £40 million profit for 2009, boasting how it has led the way in 3D. There were grumbles that most of its digital 3D lead has come from the public purse, upgrading its 73 DSN screens to 3D and playing Hollywood blockbusters on them.

What a waste. In three years time the bloom will be off the 3D rose (I pray).
Now is the time to buy Lenscrafters stock…
I love business people. On the heels of Shrek 4 doing most of it’s business on 2D screens indicating the fad may already be over, these guys are building 3D screens like crazy. Can anyone say “Cinemascope”?
Good move.
The people complaining about 3D are the same people who always complain in the face of a new, revolutionary change. The same people who complained against automobiles, radio, TV, the list is endless. It’s funny how times change but certain types of people always remain.
Its desperation, speculation. Long-term business for exhibitors sucks, because $5 pirate DVDs (LAT story had pirates demonstrating the quality of their wares on portable DVD players) cannibalize demand for theatrical. Pirates were/are selling Iron Man 2 while its in theaters.
I agree with the LAT interview with Chris Nolan — 3D is too dark, with polarized lenses the equivalent of sunglasses in a movie theater. I did that once, with Cliffhanger, it took me half the movie to figure out why it was so dark!
Exhibitors are desperate, like S&L’s hammered by upside down interest rates in the 1980′s or the various buyers of subprime junk just a few years ago.
Time ran a cover story on this. Theaters installing expensive, 3D enabled projectors that also run 2D films. One camera – two kinds of movie. BUY they will charge you a premium to see the 3D one…! Nothing wrong with 3D IF its used on the appropriate film. I hope this is not the future of all movies because 3D does NOT make a movie better.
Since when is “blockbuster” the benchmark for a film? Why is the success of a film only based on its gross? Avatar grossed a lot because people were forking over $20 a ticket. When Gone with the Wind was released a movie ticket was 10 cents..! That’s 200 GWTW tickets for one Avatar ticket!!!!
Well, that’s a lot of lenses and equipment that’s going to be needlessly gathering dust in 5 years time.
What a waste of money. 2D is still going to be triumphant. And that goes for you nincompoops sitting around at home wearing your 3D glasses to watch Drano commercials.
and these people dont give a damn about the people who cant actually watch 3D movies. I love the cinema but if everything goes 3D, thats me never going again!
