EXCLUSIVE: It used to be that Hollywood was signing stand-up comedians to TV deals all the time. Now it’s a rare occasion. But Jo Koy has inked a talent deal with Warner Bros TV to topline a comedy project based on his stand-up, which will be developed through Tom Werner’s WBTV-based Good Humor TV. While not a household name, CAA-repped Koy, who is a regular on E!’s Chelsea Lately, has built a successful touring career, selling out clubs around the country. In his comedy, the Las Vegas native (real name Joseph Herbert) focuses on his life as a Filipino American, his family, which includes his mom, siblings and his young son, as well relationships and stereotypes. Building a sitcom around stand-up comedians and their act was once a staple of comedy development that spawned hits like The Cosby Show, Seinfeld, Home Improvement, Roseanne, Mad About You and Everybody Loves Raymond. But lately, development deals with standups have become rare as the broadcast networks have started favoring single-camera comedies and gravitating towards more conceptual shows.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

I hope he does the voices of his family members as a punchline, a’la Margaret Cho. That’s never not funny. Here’s a tip for aspiring comedians: just SPEAKING in the stereotypical accent of your relatives isn’t necessarily comedy.
Ah, I’m probably being a jerk. Maybe this guy’s funny. But the above descrip does not inspire confidence.
Louis CK for life.
Never HEARD OF HIM. Typical of the talent on Chelsea Lately. The WORST show on television.
If you’ve never heard of the man or watched his act, how can you be so quick to judge?
Chelsea Lately is FAR from the worst thing on television. Or have you never seen BET?
Jo Koy is pretty funny to me. I’d like to see his career take off.
Have you seen the Kardashians?
It’s laughable you think the Kardashian franchise is worse than anything found on BET.
Cosby Show, Seinfeld, Roseanne (except for that last acid-trip season) are the gold standard for comedian-driven sitcoms. Home Improvement, Mad About You (really?), and Raymond were pap – despite their success (which I can’t argue).
Home Improvement wasn’t funny, but I think I get its appeal. It had this middle-of-the-road charm. I watched it with my parents and they seemed to like the pretty colors and laugh track.
Mad About You was a ‘zombie’ show – kept alive by the network WAY past its expiration date in order to fill a timeslot. You can actually physically see Helen Hunt itching to pursue a movie career that would eventually peter out.
Everybody Loves Raymond is inexplicably beloved despite being an unpleasant display of a poisonous, unhealthy marriage (Watch it – those two people hate each other).
You’re dead-on about the “Raymond” marriage. It is toxic, just like “The King of Queens.” I will never understand why so many sitcom marriages-relationships are just insult wars. But hopefully with the success of “Modern Family,” we can continue getting away from couples treating each other like hell in hopes of squeezing an occasional laugh.
To answer your question … Jo Koy is funny.
Certainly doesn’t mean a series with him will work but he material is good and delivery sharp.
Oh look – John Belushi eyebrow slant! Never been done before! I look forward to the originality of this guy’s “comedy”.
yeah, BELUSHI was the first person to ever raise an eyebrow. I’m not defending this guy as I’ve never even heard of him. no, I’m just pointing out how stupid your comment was.
Ray Ramano- Tim Allen- NOBODY thought their shows would work – and they kinda did…
Jo’s stand-up is awesome- comedy central runs the same show 10 times a day. If he can do chunks from his act, it’ll be great – too bad about all the hating in this forum though.
um, it’s ROMANO. and, could you please tell me how RAY ROMANO and TIM ALLEN’S shows only “kinda worked”? are you familiar with TV at all? I mean other than knowing it’s not a microwave?
Those were both number 1 shows. You can’t do better than that…
I think Jo Koy is funny but comedy is subjective. His comedy central show material was great.
Josep!
Hello May Gusta…. you know I pronounced his name correctly now
JOSEPH!! Thank you for your support I do hope he will be given a break to prove himself.. he is a true comedian at heart!!
Dear WB you are not making a mistake on this venture.. go for it!!
GO… JOSEP!!!… oooopppss I meant JOSEPH!!!
I LOVE Jo Koy on Chelsea Lately!
this guy is BEYOND unfunny. Maybe they should sign Whitney Cumming next…
I love Jo on Chelsea Lately. He is very funny and quick witted. With good writing it has potential to be a big hit because he can bring the funny and looks good on TV.
I find this guy very unfunny and annoying. Then again, people liked the Mencia show, never understood that either. Chuy is a lot funnier than this guy.
Congrats for Josep! About time a gay comedian gets their own show!
What do you call Tosh.O?
Jo’s been around for years and has really found honed voice on stage over the past few years as he’s embraced being a young dad. The C LATELY material is based around setting her up for punch lines, and not the comedians on the show. Jo is one of the few young guys out there under 35 who’s embraced being “The Hip Hop Generation Dad” on stage in a way that you can clearly see what the seres might be. His material about his relationship with his son is so funny that it allows him to transend race.
I’m a fan, and I hope WB embraces what’s really special about him and not develop yet another stupid show that has little or no connection to the life of the comedian staring in it.
Jo is a funny guy, and has a lot of charisma. I will say this, MOST of his material is hacked. If you’re a comic, beware if Jo’s in the room because he will steal your material, while still smiling. Good performer, but a better b.s. artist. Isn’t what this town is all about? He’ll fit in perfect.
How do you know about my son ?? his materials are not hacked
All his jokes about me are true, his past experiences are true, he might spiced up some of them to have a good “punch line” but basically real story.
My advice to you my son, don’t hinder someone’s success with untrue statements!!
Be with my son who has worked sooo hard to be where he is at right now help him make his dream cone true. Thank you.
JOSEP’S MOM
yeah his material is definitely not “hacked.” how can he steal material about his own family?? besides i don’t know how he would have time to go watch other comics perform considering he’s on the road pretty much every weekend out of the year. good try though.
i’ve seen jo perform dozens of times and not once have i heard him tell a joke that i’ve heard from another comedian. not like carlos mencia, and not like tony rock, and other stale and boring comedians.
i can’t wait until this show starts filming! i know a development deal takes a while but i still can’t wait.
Jo Koy is one of my favorite comedians on Chelsey Lately along with Heather McDonald. He cracks me up with his imitations of different characters. It’s is very comical to see Chelsey and Jo bicker back and forth about his not being gay. I see a very bright future of this up and coming comedian.
Jo Koy deserves the deal ~ he is hilarious!
Joy Koy is really funny. He deserves the success. And it’s good karma revenge against a petty, moronic, unfunny Chelsea Handler who constantly bags on him for being “gay” which he obviously is not. Shows Chelsea to be the gay bashing, racist talentless, sleep-her-way to a cable show host that she is.
Congratulations Joe.
good for Jo, get yours man.
Very cool. Good for him
Re Comments: who is the “me” we’re not supposed to bore? I want to get this righr.
Jokoy’s talent and his great family is a combination that will take him to the top. There is nothing that will stop Jokoy to get to where he wants to go.
Congratulations and more power to you.
I have seen Jo on Chelsea Lately and have also had the honor of seeing him live. He is a true talent in every sense. His material is always on point and his delivery reels an audience in. Some people are born to do certain things. He was born to do comedy. I have little doubt that his show will be successful. He’s brilliant and he deserves it!!
Jo is hilarious. I’ve been following him and I’m glad he’s that fresh, young & funny voice needed on tv. There’s room for everyone so chill out. To all the haters, stop hating and just sit back and let him do or die.
Jo is an acquaintance of mine & my husband. Everytime he is in South FL or in VA, we gather up a group of friends & family & take them to see his standup routine. No one has ever been disappointed. We’ve seen his routine 5 different times & it’s never exactly the same show. Jo changes his segues, plays off the crowd & he’s contantly adding new material. Many comedians are not able to do much more than a recited show. Jo is head & shoulders above all the talentless hacks polluting the craft.
He sells out venues around the world, so if you don’t find him funny, maybe its you.
Also, Jo’s not gay OR under 35. And his work on Chelsea Lately is not based on showcasing HIS talent, otherwise the show would be called Jo Lately.
BTW – Jo, if you actually read these, you owe Omar a beer.
That’s not even mentioning his generous nature. Jo has performed in a USO show for our troops. Last year, he hosted an event called “Hilarity for Charity” to raise money for a childrens’ hospital. More recently, he donated a bunch of money to help Haiti rebuild.
If anyone out there deserves a shot like this, it’s Jo.
