EXCLUSIVE: Add Daniel Craig to the conversation of who might star in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the David Fincher-directed adaptation of the novel by Stieg Larsson that has become such a publishing phenomenon. Nothing’s set, but I hear they’re talking. Steve Zaillian-scripted pic is being prepped by Columbia Pictures and producer Scott Rudin. Speculation has so far focused on Brad Pitt. No offers have been made, I’m told by the studio, but it’s the hot project, particularly with two more installments by the late Larsson right behind this one. Craig next stars in the Jon Favreau-directed Cowboys and Aliens. His franchise character, James Bond, is stuck in limbo because of the uncertainty over MGM.

A few more Pit movies for you naysayers to review: Kalifornia, 12 Monkeys,Snatch,Babel, Burn after Reading, Inglorius Basterds…
So, I’m saying I could see him in this movie. I like Daniel Craig but he is a bit one note for me.
um, HELLO, can we keep in touch with reality on this site: Headline here should read “Brad Pitt passes on dubious remake script, Sony now to beg a vulnerable Daniel Craig in wake of his James Bond franchise going under.”
“The Girl…” is a well-made movie with BO of +$10mm in the US. The two other Larsson movies are pretty pitiful. You could argue that an American “Dragon Girl” remake is questionable from a revenue point, but it is still the foundation for the sequels. Craig or Mortensen would be excellent choices; it is more difficult to find an actress to represent the ferocious intensity of Salander.
For the role of Lisbeth Salander I would like to see Archie Panjabi who play Kalinda in The Good Wife on CBS. She would be perfect.
Viggo Mortenson would be absolutely perfect for Mikael. It’s a shame if the studio passes because he doesn’t have the same outward commercial appeal as Craig or Pitt. Craig would be an excellent choice too, but Mortenson is just made for this role.
Viggo Mortenson does not have the sexual appeal or suave “ladies man” like nature that Craig and Pitt do have. Blomkvist is good looking and always has a lady friend…Viggo may be mysterious, but he’s definitely not the best fit.
I’ve all 3 books in the trilogy and read them. I’ve seen “Girl With A Dragon Tattoo” twice in the theatre and my Region 1 DVD of it just arrived in the mail. This film does not need to be redone but should have been up for an Academy Award under Best Foreign Film.
But since we cannot stop the Hollywood machine from breaking its balls by redoing an excellent film that Europe will wonder why it was done and not see, I’ll make my comments.
Fincher is an excellent director and probably the best choice for this role. Daniel Craig is capable of doing the Blomkvist role justice. As for the role of Lisbeth Salander, I don’t think anyone but Noomi Rapace should hold on to it but she won’t go through it again so I would rather have Natalie Portman fill the role over Ellen Page or Archie Panjabi (wrong ethnicity to start with). At least Portman, who majored in Pyschology at Harvard, has the brains to figure out how to play such a complex character.
To those who think the storyline is convoluted, you’re wrong. It has some extraneous parts that make it a very robust novel but these were excised for the film.
All in all, this just be left alone as an excellent Swedish film.
Liam Neeson for Blomkvist. Hands down.
I think in the remakes with different interpitations of the books. I’m liking Daniel Craig and Stephanie Hunt from Friday Night Lights.
Daniel Craig and Natalie Portman. Perfect fit. Enough said.
She has a hard time suppressing her cuteness. They need a petite angelina jolie- dark – and disturbed-type girl
I also think Daniel Craig is perfect for the part. However, I would like to see Kristen Bell play the part of the Girl and maybe Laura Dern as the granddaughter! Kristen has that pure look now, but look at her face! She would be unexpected and I think great for the role!
Totally agree that Viggo Mortenson was born to play this… This might be the only reason I would pay to see the remake. I thought the book was enjoyable but forgettable and the Swedish film entertaining, so I have no desire to see an America remake, thanks. But watching Mortenson might bring me to the cinema, though.
Viggo Mortensen would be perfect as Michael and for Lisbeth – wow that is hard – no one comes to mind at all!
I’ve been saying Kristen Bell should do it since I read the first book. She’d be a completely inspired choice, so against type. But if you look at her dark work on Veronica Mars–miles away from these dumb rom-coms she’s been doing, you can see she has the darkness and the dramatic chops. Make her brunette, and put her through wardrobe and make-up and she’s a DEAD RINGER for Salander, as described in the book. Ok, so she’s a whole two inches taller. Better than friggin’ Carey Mulligan or Keira Knightley or whoever.
I wish someone would take the idea seriously. She would be incredible, and it would reclaim her career for the forces of good, not evil.
Stephanie Szostak. french born brunette petite
Yes, Yes, Yes – Kalinda (Archie Panjabi) from The Good Wife is perfect – she has the intensity and laser focus of Salander, as well as the latent and somewhat ambiguous sensuality the role demands.
Yes, Yes, I would love to take this part serious!
Loved Michael Nyqvist in the film. But the Swedish actress was awful. Lisbeth in the book is someone who is under estimated. Someone mistaken often as a minor who is unable to fend for herself. Noomi was way to old looking. She was badly cast. Ok she had the right build, but also she has no mystery and can not pull of the enigmatic character of Salender. For that reason I for one can not wait to see a new version of the film. Daniel Craig would do an awesome job. And anyone will be better than Noomi..My money is on Twilight actress. Salander is the pivotal role in the trilogy and they need to get it right this time!
i want to play this part so bad…. ugh.. its such a beautiful role.. iv been through the abuse and termoil that lisbeth has and its agonizing reading about the people that are supposidly casting.. the eyes are the key
