DEADLINE EXCLUSIVE: Don Kramer’s Wonder Woman
DC Comics announced that, starting today, Wonder Woman “will appear like you’ve never seen her before”. And I wish they’d just left her alone, especially since she’s the only comic book character female I’ve ever admired. Of course, it took a bunch of men to ruin her. Look at the new costume design by DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee below: she looks ready for Goth Day at the Sherman Oaks Galleria. (Shame on Diane Nelson, the head of DC Entertainment, for allowing this to happen. And for not finding a talented woman writer now as in years past to update the icon’s saga.) Here’s the announcement about the dumbass stuff that DC Comics is doing to her. So let me start the campaign: FREE WONDER WOMAN!
DC Comics Co-Publisher and bestselling artist Jim Lee has redesigned her costume for the modern era, just in time for BABYLON 5 creator and critically acclaimed writer J. Michael Straczynski and artists Don Kramer and Michael Babinski to launch the Amazon Princess into an exciting and epic new era of adventure.
Starting with their story in WONDER WOMAN #600, which is in comic shops today, Straczynski and Kramer will begin a run that is both forward-looking and true to the legendary character, planting her firmly in the modern era.
Here’s what J. Michael Straczynski had to say:
“Suppose you woke up one morning, or turned a corner, and suddenly the life you had been leading up to that moment…was not the life you were leading.
“Suppose someone went back in time and changed one thing, and it changed your life to the point that you had little or no memory of what life had been like before the change happened. What would you do to get it back? Should you get it back? Who did it? And maybe more important…why did they do it?
“That is the question faced by Diana starting in issue 600.
“The Gods, for reasons of their own but which may have something to with their survival and perhaps the survival of Earth itself, have changed the timeline. In the new timeline, years ago the Gods removed their protection from Paradise Island, and left it vulnerable to attack. And attacked it was. Led by a dark figure, a veritable army descended upon the Island, equipped with weapons that could kill even the Amazons. Outgunned, doomed, Hippolyta gave over her three-year-old daughter to a handful of guardians who spirited her away as Hippolyta led one last desperate battle against the forces that had come to destroy all she had created. In that final battle, she and most of the Amazons were killed, though some managed to escape.
“It’s now nearly twenty years later. Diana has been raised in an urban setting, but with a foot in both worlds. She has little or no memory of the other timeline. She knows only what she’s been told by those who raised her On the run, hunted, she must try to survive, help the other refugee Amazons escape the army that is still after them, discover who destroyed Paradise Island and why…and if the timeline can be corrected or not. She also does not yet have access to her full powers, but will be gaining them as she goes. Along the way, she will face a range of enemies — human and otherwise — who we have not seen before.
“What we also haven’t seen before is her new look, the first significant change in her appearance since the character debuted in 1941 (not counting the mod look used briefly in the sixties, about which the less said the better). It reflects her origins in both the outside world and the world of Amazons: tough, elegant…a street-fighter’s look which also incorporates elements of her classic design. It reflects the two sides warring for ultimate victory, and underscores the path she must take.
It’s a look designed to be taken seriously as a warrior, in partial answer to the many female fans over the years who’ve asked, “how does she fight in that thing without all her parts falling out?”) She can close it up to pass unnoticed…open it for the freedom to fight…lose the jacket or keep it on…it has pockets (the other fan question, “where does she carry anything in that outfit?”, it can be accessorized…it’s a Wonder Woman look designed for the 21st century. The bracelets are still there, but made more colorful, tied on the inside and over the hand, with a script W on each of them that form WW when she holds them side by side…and if you get hit by one of them, it leaves a W mark. This is a Wonder Woman who signs her work…letting her enemies know that she’s getting closer.
“This is Wonder Woman reborn, literally and metaphorically: fast, elegant, tough, smart…the savior of her people, their guardian and protector…avenging the fall of Paradise Island, searching to discover why Paradise Island was abandoned by the gods. In the end, what she discovers will change her life and the world forever…and she will come face to face with a decision that will mean life or death for the entire human race.”
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.
DC Comics Co-Publisher and bestselling artist Jim Lee has redesigned her costume for the modern era, just in time for BABYLON 5 creator and critically acclaimed writer J. WW had a great female writer in Gail Simone but they wanted JMS to take over and reboot her for some reason. Thankfully it appears that whatever he does can be undone easily since it is happening outside the mainstream DC Universe. And the costume sucks…
Yeah the costume is bad… those guys don’t know anything about clothes. Her face is harder, too – no sweetness & light in it
OMG! She looks like, Robin the Boy Wonder, on a bad makeover only far more masculine and harsh, dark and dingy.
NAIL on the head. WW now looks like a redesign for her sidekick. Well, at least they didn’t make her a cougar-town-wonder-woman. Nothing ruins dignitas like trying to wear your daughter’s wardrobe. they TRY to get a hook to boost her circulation and what do you get: “Hi, I’m a warior amazon, and I just studied on killin a man, unnnhun!” Hey, I’ve got some update accesories. Give her a ponytail; and a sidekick who’s from the insane asylum (make him doc from prince and the revolution– i smell movie merchandising), or maybe steve trevor’s an army psychiatrist who was inspired by batman in the red and green crazy costume to help mankind during during stupid make-overs. His clients have been spider-man, green arrow, super-man a few times, and he does pro-bono work for robin all the time, because he is from bizarro world where they only pro bono the rich. Also, he has put out a hit on grant morrison because enough is enough.
DC Comics get a clue!!! I loved Wonder Woman growing up and she is still my favorite super-hero but this garbage you’ve got her in for her costume needs a serious re-think
how do we get them to change her back, lord i hope she spins around 1000 times and get rid of the god awful costume, i hate it i hate it i hate it i hate it, so unfamiliar to me. i loved her how she was, this is pure garbage
It’s like a black Green Lantern or a black Nick Fury. It’s bullshit
Black Nick Fury? This has already happened buddy and it is awesome.
AND she’s gonna be black? starting what issue?
OH wait. you mean like black canary… she’s not black, you know.
We have had a black nick Fury a black Green Lantern And A redesign on Wonder Woman but they can’t seem to get Superman out of the red and blue what the hell
Complain all you want, but you were NOT buying her books. If you want her to have the same bathing suit that she’s had for 50 years, then buy the monthly comics. Admire her from a distance and you’re not keeping her afloat.
Uh Kell, some of us actually buy her books. For example, I have the entirety of Simone’s run on the shelf in front of me. That aside, I have three problems with the new design, aside from the stereotypical ‘they changed it, so now it sucks’. Wearing high heels in a combat sitation will either break the heels or twist your ankle, as well as making it easier for your enemies to trip you. Likewise, wearing a choker is also not such a wise idea. Finally, “The bracelets… [have] a script W on each of them… and if you get hit by one of them, it leaves a W mark” No warrior training I have ever seen encourages hitting someone with your wrists! Whoever designed this outfit clearly does not know how warriors. Her old costume, despite being too exposed, was simple, being a breastplate, flat-soled boots bracers and a tiara.
Also, Wonder Woman is strong and maternal, as well as the spirit of truth. this new outfit looks more like a nineties anti-hero, albeit without the bad hair. It is also somewhat bland, something you may expect a remake of Huntress or Lady Shiva to wear, not the premier heroine of the DC universe.
William Moulton Marston must be spinning in his grave.
This so-called “new” design is blatantly awful!!! This is hideous; to say the least. The Wonder Woman I grew up with was a woman of radiance and glamour. This new design has completely changed her persona. This design has taken her from a fun-loving crime-fighting princess to a dark almost villain-like quality. Change her back: or at least brighten her up a whole lot!!!!
I like the fact she’s not fighting in lingerie anymore, but don’t like this new outfit. She doesn’t seem like an Amazon warrior at all. They should have just updated her outfit like they did with Robin in the 90′s. A jacket? Does Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, et al need a jacket? I know women like to accessorize, but come on.
Yeah, so it’s not that the original costume was great… it’s just the new one is down right horrible.
What a bland, unimaginative, politically correct vision of Wonder Woman! They didn’t even have the balls to make it permanent. They’ve left themselves an out to see how the public take it.
But the question is – why did they go in?
It’s almost as if this was a test screening for something else…..
Wait!…Could it be an image that is easily transplanted onto the screen for Megan Fox to play?
And she could play it to a dumbed down audience who wouldn’t know DC dialog from a McDonald’s advert. And can’t see blatant marketing material.
Oops – did I give it away guys? Sorry! Really, I am.
And yes Deadline – you can consider this a tip off that Megan Fox is playing Wonder Woman. It’s already been decided.
She’s had more than one female writer. But not that many more…
Gail Simone wasn’t selling that well, so DC decided to try a new approach. Happens all the time, does not mean that DC is sexist or something.
Also I’d just like to add that a female writer will not automatically be better at Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman was created by a male writer, after all.
thank goodness for that.
This outfit makes her able to be taken seriously as a warrior??
What? She’s a mythical amazon. I mean, I give them credit for covering her up more modestly, but this costume is boring, and the made her a stick with boobs. This costume is like any other unimaginative, unrealistic, painted-on fantasy crime fighting outfit. This is not Wonder Woman. She’s the only non-porn SUPER HERO, she’s allowed to be over the top and female. We don’t want her to be like everyone else DC does.
Black?? I mean stay with the American theme at least…she looks like a wanna-be rockstar not a super hero.
She’s just a modern shadow of her former self.
It’s like she’s and (badly dressed) slick fantasy spy, which I get for Diana Prince, but wonder woman is a symbol of truth and she’s and ICON. She’s an amazon for crying out loud.
You can’t put an icon in a different outfit with a different body type and say it’s better than the thing that everyone has come to love and respect.
What happened to all the people that could draw well at DC? Or all the people that had any imagination. Did they fire them?
Is it just possible that WB is so far out of touch with one of their ‘big 3/Trinity’ characters? Based on this costume, I’d say a resounding yes. The way that I see this, yes, is an out/waiting for public approval for the costume. I’m waiting for the backlash to hit a high (which seems to be happening) and then we’ll see a ‘timeline crash’ where both Diana’s will meet and the original will be re-introduced. I recall a comment being made in regards to her original costume as ‘not being functional’. But yet it seems flying/running around in a cape is? Also, the whole point for the uniform is more for armor (stated on numerous occasions). The colors were also to represent allegiance and respect to the nation and society she entered. How is it that those facts seem to be cast aside? That’s the center of the character. A moral and centered compass and a change to darker clothing seems to truly diminish the reason as to why she was created. I understand injecting characters with new life and blood and I support that. But the uniform she wears IS recognizable the world over. Put the original WW next to ‘the NEW WW’ and I feel confident in saying that the majority of the ‘non comic buying’ public would have no idea who she is. Problems with the original costume? Fine. Give it more of a Greek/warrior flare. Instead of the ‘star spangled panties’ (I’ve always cringed at that phrase)replace it with the leather strip skirt (ala Xena) or the really clever take Alex Ross had on her in Kingdom Come. Bring back the more formidable bracelets (think of John Byrne’s run on WW). Point being, WB/DC/Marvel need to remember one thing…the writing is what breathes life into fictional characters, not their uniform. If a writer has to ‘revamp’ a character because of a costume, maybe they’re simply not cut out for the job. Our heroes uniforms are their ‘identity’ to us. Much like police, doctors, firefighters, etc. They may vary slightly, but they are all essentially the same. And for good reason. Also, if we remember correctly, Spider-Man, Superman, Batman, and yes, WW have all had major costume overhauls. History also shows that ALL of them returned to their original uniforms. Smarten up ‘powers that be’…if Wonder Woman is truly one of the crowning jewels of the DC universe, you don’t replace the jewel simply because it is old. You clean it up (enough with the convoluted back histories/timelines). There’s a reason why she is ‘Super-Heroine Number 1″. Recognition. Please, give her the recognition we (her fan base) deserve and more importantly, the RESPECT for being the longest running FEMALE super hero comic book of all time.
Comic heroes already went with the phase of wearing jackets over the costumes back in the 1990′s. That was terrible back then and is definetly a terrible idea once again.
No reason to get worked up. Costume changes (especially for major characters) never lasts. Spider-Man, Superman and Batman have all had big changes before but the publishers always revert back to the originals. Wonder Woman will be back to her bathing suit look eventually.
This is absolutely horrid. Whether you thought it was sexist or not, the fact is that the original Wonder Woman costume is iconic and indelibly etched into the mainstream consciousness. Why would DC ruin the very thing that the public most identifies her with?
And don’t get me started on the whole idea of Wonder Woman being “street tough” so people can “relate to her.” You’re not supposed to relate to her, you’re supposed to look up to her due to her Greek mythological-based origin as one of the Amazons. This is particularly what female fans related to. That’s even worse than the costume change.
Look at it this way: if the Wonder Woman movie were made tomorrow, can DC honestly say they’d go with both this costume and this altered origin? I think not, so why would you go through with it in any other media? This is retarded.
“Look at it this way: if the Wonder Woman movie were made tomorrow, can DC honestly say they’d go with both this costume and this altered origin?”
Well, that’s exactly what Warners DID do with CATWOMAN…
Superheroes’ costumes change all the time, and then if people don’t like it, they change back. The continuity shifts and usually shifts back. If this boosts sales, it’ll stick for a little longer, but it’s very likely that it’ll change back.
The ideas in this press release are awful enough by themselves, but whoever wrote this needs to go back to making copy for the J Peterman catalog.
Why can’t DC get one of their books right on film???
Aw, relax, Nikki.
This year alone, Batman died and came back…
Captain America was returned for the death as well.
They were BOTH lost in time. (My geek is showing, right?)
So… A “timeline that needs to be restored?” It will be. Spoiler alert.
So, you have to deal with Hot Topic Wonder Woman for a bit. She’ll return – fighting in high heels and bustier before you know it. Pounding villains with strong punches and possible wardrobe malfunctions.
If that’s a good thing or not, that’s up to you…
OMG… Hot Topic Wonder Woman… that so perfectly describes the look! I only follow comics tangentially, though I was a fan of the t.v. show when I was a kid. In any case, I think it’s kind of fun to explore Wonder Woman’s dark side. LOL. It doesn’t take away from the original story, it just adds another layer.
Hmmm … sound almost exactly like John Byrne’s ‘re-imagining’ of Superman in the eighties — and THAT was one of the biggest mistakes ever made. I mean, the Crisis on Infinite Earth’s (back in, what, ’85 or so) re-wrote the history of the DC universe and down-powered some of the most remarkable and inventive super heroes around.
This sounds very much like a lack of abiliyt to formulate engaging stories with an existing character, so we just create a new character and give her the same name!
Not that it hasn’t happened before (look at the golden-age/silver-age split in DC history), but it IS a mistake and will be seen as one only after it is too late — seems people never learn from history … even made-up history.
What was wrong with John Byrne’s Man of Steel from the 80′s? The origin was done PERFECTLY, and thats the one we go by today.
So what else is new? The CW already ruined “Superman” with their braindead version of Clark Kent.
Actually JMS is taking the reins of the book from a talented female writer, Gail Simone.
Yawn! This costume design and the spin around it are really, really boring.
If they wanted a functionally designed outfit, why not get a sportswear fashion designer, who knows how fabric behaves on the female form, to design her look?
If they wanted a battle realistic designed outfit, why didn’t they consult with a noted Greek anthropologist (for a classical look)or weapons manufacturer like Raytheon (for a modern look)?
Once again,DC loads both barrels of the shotgun and shoots self twice in the foot.
Why should Wonder Woman be immune to the Comic World Re-Do… EVERY comic character has gone through it…sticking with DC let us go through the list… Green Lantern has 5 people with that title, Aquaman lost his f’ing hand… they made Superman…ok SUPERMAN, the Flagship character of DC Comics… BLUE!!!! remember that time in the 90′s the Electric Blue Superman and the Red one too…Wonder Woman is behind the curve. And since you sound semi-feminist all pissy that “it took men to ruin Wonder Woman” so you want the hero and idols to all these women and girls in this day and age to fight crime in a corset and thigh high boots?
I’d like to see Nikki fight crime in a corset and leather boots.
Back on topic, I agree with Nikki and most of the posts here. She doesn’t look like a formidable Amazonian warrior, more like a trendy college girl with a gold tiara.
Don’t worry — in the world of comic books, all vast sweeping changes go back to exactly the way things were before within two years. And given DC’s ongoing fetish for reverting everything back to the Silver Age, that’ll probably be less in this case.
Honestly, I don’t…hate this outfit. I like the top and the belt and the wrists quite a bit, and I could live with the boots and tights: although they’re losing that iconic bright blue which really made the costume jump off the page, it’s not hideous or silly-looking and could have been a lot worse.
The short leather jacket is SO FUCKING ’90s, though. That one’s a dealbreaker, no doubt about it. It ruins the lines of the costume and makes the whole thing too dark. It ain’t Wonder Woman, basically.
Sounds like an interesting storyline to me, im not really sure why you think its a bad idea, or why it needs a female author but it sounds like something an over zealous feminist would say. Wonder Woman has always been a great comic written well regardless of the sex of the author. And to say she is the only female comic character you’ve admired means you dont read very many comics. Both Dc and Marvel are full of strong independant women if thats your kick, i would suggest you read some Elektra, Alias or Birds of Prey, those are filled with great female characters, again written well regardless of the gender of the writer. If you dont like a storyline quite simply dont read it, there really isnt a need to bring in your own feminist agenda when clearly it is not needed or wanted.
i dont think its a feminist thing…. gail simone is just a better writer for wonder woman…
Its is me or it looks like they want to make Wonder Woman a tvseries a la Smallville?
In case they think Smallville is good because it lasted 10 season let me tell you something DC. Smallville sucks! The only reason is still on the air is because CW doesn’t have anything else to put in its place and they can break even over the DVD and international sales.
I’m no expert on Wonder Woman but I don’t see anything really offensive about this. I think the outfit is pretty neat
“Jim Lee has redesigned her costume for the modern era…”
If the modern era is 1993. Nice mom jeans.
Huh? Mom Jeans – are you kidding?! Since when are “Mom jeans” skin-tight, painted-on – I don’t care for the new look, but she doesn’t look like anybody’s Mom that I know!
let’s be honest here, even the dedicated fandom doesn’t care for Wonder Woman all that much, the most anyone pays attention to her is when she is with the Justice League…she has no memorable villains to speak of, no memorable supporting cast…but this is change for the sake of change and I don’t think it’s going to do any good…the amount of people who never read Wonder Woman won’t start reading it now and the ones who do read it will probably drop it
You’re right about fandom being lukewarm on WW – they kind of always have been. The George Perez and Messner-Loebs WW runs are the only ones I can think of in the last 25 years that sold particularly well. The Heinberg stuff too, I guess, for the limited number of issues he did. Straczynski should improve sales for a bit, just because he’s a popular writer.
Women superheroes in general are a tough sell to fandom. For example, with the exception of Spider-Girl, Marvel has never had a book starring a superheroine go over 60 issues in its entire publishing history.
The reason WW doesn’t have any memorable villains or supporting cast is because no creators ever build that stuff up. They always come in and want to take WW in a new direction, or introduce their own characters and concepts, instead of working on the foundation.
Disappointing. I love WonderWoman too and was looking forward to seeing her in classic uniform. The change in costume is the lazy way out.
Looks trashy…. just what we’re looking for in a role model for young girls.
Whose terrible decision was this?
Really, and a strapless swimsuit and gold cincher isn’t trashy?
And a strapless bustier and knee-high boots were better? Get a grip. A woman could conceivably wear this in public and not get cited for indecent exposure.
Well, Straczynski is a good writer and at least they didn’t kill or cripple her, a common fate for female characters in superhero comics (just google “women in refrigerators”). Iconic characters are likely to meet a similar fate: DC has repeatedly killed and/or cripples Superman and Batman, and Marvel recently garnered a fair amount of unearned publicity for killing Captain America.
Costume changes are nothing new – this will stick for a year or maybe a half a decade, then a new writer, artist or editor will go back to the classic look (with whatever minor-or-major changes they decide on).
At least she’s in low heels and isn’t showing cleavage to her navel. This is less shocking, and definitely less offensive, than the Mary Jane handwashing Spiderman’s costume debacle (google if you dare – that one’s barely SFW).
On the other hand, I don’t particularly like superheores, so I’m biased.
Um, actually, there are DEFINITELY women in refrigerators here — Diana’s mother and most of the Amazons. They’re all being killed off to drive the angst and give the hero motivation — this is the classic definition of women in refrigerators. That it’s now happening to Wonder Woman makes it doubly insulting.
And Wonder Woman is also being de-powered, so that’s more evidence of women in refrigerators syndrome.
My primary objections are to the storyline. Wonder Woman and the Amazons have had some truly awful storyline inflicted on them in recent years, and this seems like more of the same. A “streetwise” Wonder Woman just … isn’t Wonder Woman. Good things have been done before (Greg Rucka, George Perez) without dumping on everything the character is about.
Although that outfit is awful. I’m all for getting her out of the bathing-suit getup, but this looks just as ridiculous (if for different reasons).
But as comic book fan, I know this, too, will all pass. Until then, that’s less money I’ll be giving DC every month.
Really? This is just wrong.
“…she’s the only comic book character female I’ve ever admired. Of course, it took a bunch of men to ruin her…”
It also took a bunch of men to ‘create’ her.
Originally pyschologist William Moulton Marston, (“Charles Moulton”) who saw the “great educational potential of comic books”, was hired as an ‘educational consultant’ for National Periodicals and All-Winner Comics (forerunners of DC Comics) in 1941, before creating a female comic book superhero, in a field dominated by male characters.
Marston was inspired by Olive Byrne, who lived him and his wife in a ‘polygamous/polyamorous’ relationship. Having 2 children with both women, Marston said that both women served as exemplars for his character, that was subsequently illustrated by artist ‘Harry Peter’.
“Wonder Woman is psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, I believe, rule the world,” Marston wrote at the time, defending his character’s look as swell as the many references to sado-masochism in the WW stories, with every story highlighting, women being tied up either by a ‘magic lasso’, chains, ropes, etc, forcing their ‘obedience’.
“Not even girls want to be girls so long as our feminine archetype lacks force, strength, and power”, said Marston. “Not wanting to be girls, they don’t want to be tender, submissive, peace-loving as ‘good women’ are…Wonder Woman satisfies the subconscious, elaborately disguised desire of males to be mastered by a woman who loves them.”
For Marston, Wonder Woman was not primarily a role model for girls, but the vehicle through which he would get young boys used to the idea of ‘dominating’ women.
“Women are exciting for this one reason — it is the secret of women’s allure — women enjoy submission, being bound”, Marston said.
“This I bring out in the ‘Paradise Island’ sequences where the girls beg for chains and enjoy wearing them”.
Virtually all th early “Wonder Woman” stories included a full-length WW in an oversized bondage panel. In one 1948 story, there were no fewer than 75 panels depicting bondage.
“The only hope for peace is to teach people who are full of pep and unbound force is to enjoy being bound, ” said Marston.
“Only when the control of self by others is more pleasant than the unbound assertion of self in human relationships can we hope for a stable, peaceful human society. Giving to others, being controlled by them, submitting to other people cannot possibly be enjoyable without a strong erotic element…”
DC Unleashes “Wonder Woman” including early ‘bondage’ illustrations:

Well composed M and illuminating. Interesting how we patronize certain ideals and mythologies without knowing the basis of their genesis. What has largely identified as an empowering symbol plays right back into the objectifying desires of undersexed men.
Everyone involved with the decision making process to go forward on this idea needs to be fired!
It’s comics, I give this 2 years tops before everything is reversed.
Shame on Geoff Johns and Jim Lee for taking tge company’s 3d most valuable and recognizable trademark and turning her into a corny, uncool. The changes probably won’t last a year because the fan outcry is so negative, and in the very short term they’ll call it a success if it sells an extra 15,000 comics a month, but this is dumb dumb dumb and only represents a setback for the character appearing in other media — ie where the real money is — like film and TV. That leather jacket they have stuck WW in is especially cringe-worthy.
