DEADLINE EXCLUSIVE: Don Kramer's Wonder Woman
DC Comics announced that, starting today, Wonder Woman "will appear like you’ve never seen her before". And I wish they'd just left her alone, especially since she's the only comic book character female I've ever admired. Of course, it took a bunch of men to ruin her. Look at the new costume design by DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee below: she looks ready for Goth Day at the Sherman Oaks Galleria. (Shame on Diane Nelson, the head of DC Entertainment, for allowing this to happen. And for not finding a talented woman writer now as in years past to update the icon's saga.) Here's the announcement about the dumbass stuff that DC Comics is doing to her. So let me start the campaign: FREE WONDER WOMAN!
DC Comics Co-Publisher and bestselling artist Jim Lee has redesigned her costume for the modern era, just in time for BABYLON 5 creator and critically acclaimed writer J. Michael Straczynski and artists Don Kramer and Michael Babinski to launch the Amazon Princess into an exciting and epic new era of adventure.
Starting with their story in WONDER WOMAN #600, which is in comic shops today, Straczynski and Kramer will begin a run that is both forward-looking and true to the legendary character, planting her firmly in the modern era.
Here’s what J. Michael Straczynski had to say:
"Suppose you woke up one morning, or turned a corner, and suddenly the life you had been leading up to that moment...was not the life you were leading.
"Suppose someone went back in time and changed one thing, and it changed your life to the point that you had little or no memory of what life had been like before the change happened. What would you do to get it back? Should you get it back? Who did it? And maybe more important...why did they do it?
"That is the question faced by Diana starting in issue 600.
"The Gods, for reasons of their own but which may have something to with their survival and perhaps the survival of Earth itself, have changed the timeline. In the new timeline, years ago the Gods removed their protection from Paradise Island, and left it vulnerable to attack. And attacked it was. Led by a dark figure, a veritable army descended upon the Island, equipped with weapons that could kill even the Amazons. Outgunned, doomed, Hippolyta gave over her three-year-old daughter to a handful of guardians who spirited her away as Hippolyta led one last desperate battle against the forces that had come to destroy all she had created. In that final battle, she and most of the Amazons were killed, though some managed to escape.
"It's now nearly twenty years later. Diana has been raised in an urban setting, but with a foot in both worlds. She has little or no memory of the other timeline. She knows only what she's been told by those who raised her On the run, hunted, she must try to survive, help the other refugee Amazons escape the army that is still after them, discover who destroyed Paradise Island and why...and if the timeline can be corrected or not. She also does not yet have access to her full powers, but will be gaining them as she goes. Along the way, she will face a range of enemies -- human and otherwise -- who we have not seen before.
"What we also haven't seen before is her new look, the first significant change in her appearance since the character debuted in 1941 (not counting the mod look used briefly in the sixties, about which the less said the better). It reflects her origins in both the outside world and the world of Amazons: tough, elegant...a street-fighter's look which also incorporates elements of her classic design. It reflects the two sides warring for ultimate victory, and underscores the path she must take.
It's a look designed to be taken seriously as a warrior, in partial answer to the many female fans over the years who've asked, "how does she fight in that thing without all her parts falling out?") She can close it up to pass unnoticed...open it for the freedom to fight...lose the jacket or keep it on...it has pockets (the other fan question, "where does she carry anything in that outfit?", it can be accessorized...it's a Wonder Woman look designed for the 21st century. The bracelets are still there, but made more colorful, tied on the inside and over the hand, with a script W on each of them that form WW when she holds them side by side...and if you get hit by one of them, it leaves a W mark. This is a Wonder Woman who signs her work...letting her enemies know that she's getting closer.
"This is Wonder Woman reborn, literally and metaphorically: fast, elegant, tough, smart...the savior of her people, their guardian and protector...avenging the fall of Paradise Island, searching to discover why Paradise Island was abandoned by the gods. In the end, what she discovers will change her life and the world forever...and she will come face to face with a decision that will mean life or death for the entire human race."

WW had a great female writer in Gail Simone but they wanted JMS to take over and reboot her for some reason. Thankfully it appears that whatever he does can be undone easily since it is happening outside the mainstream DC Universe. And the costume sucks…
Yeah the costume is bad… those guys don’t know anything about clothes. Her face is harder, too – no sweetness & light in it
OMG! She looks like, Robin the Boy Wonder, on a bad makeover only far more masculine and harsh, dark and dingy.
NAIL on the head. WW now looks like a redesign for her sidekick. Well, at least they didn’t make her a cougar-town-wonder-woman. Nothing ruins dignitas like trying to wear your daughter’s wardrobe. they TRY to get a hook to boost her circulation and what do you get: “Hi, I’m a warior amazon, and I just studied on killin a man, unnnhun!” Hey, I’ve got some update accesories. Give her a ponytail; and a sidekick who’s from the insane asylum (make him doc from prince and the revolution– i smell movie merchandising), or maybe steve trevor’s an army psychiatrist who was inspired by batman in the red and green crazy costume to help mankind during during stupid make-overs. His clients have been spider-man, green arrow, super-man a few times, and he does pro-bono work for robin all the time, because he is from bizarro world where they only pro bono the rich. Also, he has put out a hit on grant morrison because enough is enough.
DC Comics get a clue!!! I loved Wonder Woman growing up and she is still my favorite super-hero but this garbage you’ve got her in for her costume needs a serious re-think
It’s like a black Green Lantern or a black Nick Fury. It’s bullshit
Black Nick Fury? This has already happened buddy and it is awesome.
AND she’s gonna be black? starting what issue?
OH wait. you mean like black canary… she’s not black, you know.
Complain all you want, but you were NOT buying her books. If you want her to have the same bathing suit that she’s had for 50 years, then buy the monthly comics. Admire her from a distance and you’re not keeping her afloat.
This so-called “new” design is blatantly awful!!! This is hideous; to say the least. The Wonder Woman I grew up with was a woman of radiance and glamour. This new design has completely changed her persona. This design has taken her from a fun-loving crime-fighting princess to a dark almost villain-like quality. Change her back: or at least brighten her up a whole lot!!!!
I like the fact she’s not fighting in lingerie anymore, but don’t like this new outfit. She doesn’t seem like an Amazon warrior at all. They should have just updated her outfit like they did with Robin in the 90’s. A jacket? Does Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, et al need a jacket? I know women like to accessorize, but come on.
Yeah, so it’s not that the original costume was great… it’s just the new one is down right horrible.
What a bland, unimaginative, politically correct vision of Wonder Woman! They didn’t even have the balls to make it permanent. They’ve left themselves an out to see how the public take it.
But the question is – why did they go in?
It’s almost as if this was a test screening for something else…..
Wait!…Could it be an image that is easily transplanted onto the screen for Megan Fox to play?
And she could play it to a dumbed down audience who wouldn’t know DC dialog from a McDonald’s advert. And can’t see blatant marketing material.
Oops – did I give it away guys? Sorry! Really, I am.
And yes Deadline – you can consider this a tip off that Megan Fox is playing Wonder Woman. It’s already been decided.
She’s had more than one female writer. But not that many more…
Gail Simone wasn’t selling that well, so DC decided to try a new approach. Happens all the time, does not mean that DC is sexist or something.
Also I’d just like to add that a female writer will not automatically be better at Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman was created by a male writer, after all.
Comic heroes already went with the phase of wearing jackets over the costumes back in the 1990’s. That was terrible back then and is definetly a terrible idea once again.
No reason to get worked up. Costume changes (especially for major characters) never lasts. Spider-Man, Superman and Batman have all had big changes before but the publishers always revert back to the originals. Wonder Woman will be back to her bathing suit look eventually.
This is absolutely horrid. Whether you thought it was sexist or not, the fact is that the original Wonder Woman costume is iconic and indelibly etched into the mainstream consciousness. Why would DC ruin the very thing that the public most identifies her with?
And don’t get me started on the whole idea of Wonder Woman being “street tough” so people can “relate to her.” You’re not supposed to relate to her, you’re supposed to look up to her due to her Greek mythological-based origin as one of the Amazons. This is particularly what female fans related to. That’s even worse than the costume change.
Look at it this way: if the Wonder Woman movie were made tomorrow, can DC honestly say they’d go with both this costume and this altered origin? I think not, so why would you go through with it in any other media? This is retarded.
“Look at it this way: if the Wonder Woman movie were made tomorrow, can DC honestly say they’d go with both this costume and this altered origin?”
Well, that’s exactly what Warners DID do with CATWOMAN…
Superheroes’ costumes change all the time, and then if people don’t like it, they change back. The continuity shifts and usually shifts back. If this boosts sales, it’ll stick for a little longer, but it’s very likely that it’ll change back.
The ideas in this press release are awful enough by themselves, but whoever wrote this needs to go back to making copy for the J Peterman catalog.
Why can’t DC get one of their books right on film???
Aw, relax, Nikki.
This year alone, Batman died and came back…
Captain America was returned for the death as well.
They were BOTH lost in time. (My geek is showing, right?)
So… A “timeline that needs to be restored?” It will be. Spoiler alert.
So, you have to deal with Hot Topic Wonder Woman for a bit. She’ll return – fighting in high heels and bustier before you know it. Pounding villains with strong punches and possible wardrobe malfunctions.
If that’s a good thing or not, that’s up to you…
OMG… Hot Topic Wonder Woman… that so perfectly describes the look! I only follow comics tangentially, though I was a fan of the t.v. show when I was a kid. In any case, I think it’s kind of fun to explore Wonder Woman’s dark side. LOL. It doesn’t take away from the original story, it just adds another layer.
Hmmm … sound almost exactly like John Byrne’s ‘re-imagining’ of Superman in the eighties — and THAT was one of the biggest mistakes ever made. I mean, the Crisis on Infinite Earth’s (back in, what, ‘85 or so) re-wrote the history of the DC universe and down-powered some of the most remarkable and inventive super heroes around.
This sounds very much like a lack of abiliyt to formulate engaging stories with an existing character, so we just create a new character and give her the same name!
Not that it hasn’t happened before (look at the golden-age/silver-age split in DC history), but it IS a mistake and will be seen as one only after it is too late — seems people never learn from history … even made-up history.
What was wrong with John Byrne’s Man of Steel from the 80’s? The origin was done PERFECTLY, and thats the one we go by today.
So what else is new? The CW already ruined “Superman” with their braindead version of Clark Kent.
Actually JMS is taking the reins of the book from a talented female writer, Gail Simone.
Yawn! This costume design and the spin around it are really, really boring.
If they wanted a functionally designed outfit, why not get a sportswear fashion designer, who knows how fabric behaves on the female form, to design her look?
If they wanted a battle realistic designed outfit, why didn’t they consult with a noted Greek anthropologist (for a classical look)or weapons manufacturer like Raytheon (for a modern look)?
Once again,DC loads both barrels of the shotgun and shoots self twice in the foot.
Why should Wonder Woman be immune to the Comic World Re-Do… EVERY comic character has gone through it…sticking with DC let us go through the list… Green Lantern has 5 people with that title, Aquaman lost his f’ing hand… they made Superman…ok SUPERMAN, the Flagship character of DC Comics… BLUE!!!! remember that time in the 90’s the Electric Blue Superman and the Red one too…Wonder Woman is behind the curve. And since you sound semi-feminist all pissy that “it took men to ruin Wonder Woman” so you want the hero and idols to all these women and girls in this day and age to fight crime in a corset and thigh high boots?
I’d like to see Nikki fight crime in a corset and leather boots.
Back on topic, I agree with Nikki and most of the posts here. She doesn’t look like a formidable Amazonian warrior, more like a trendy college girl with a gold tiara.
Don’t worry — in the world of comic books, all vast sweeping changes go back to exactly the way things were before within two years. And given DC’s ongoing fetish for reverting everything back to the Silver Age, that’ll probably be less in this case.
Honestly, I don’t…hate this outfit. I like the top and the belt and the wrists quite a bit, and I could live with the boots and tights: although they’re losing that iconic bright blue which really made the costume jump off the page, it’s not hideous or silly-looking and could have been a lot worse.
The short leather jacket is SO FUCKING ’90s, though. That one’s a dealbreaker, no doubt about it. It ruins the lines of the costume and makes the whole thing too dark. It ain’t Wonder Woman, basically.
Sounds like an interesting storyline to me, im not really sure why you think its a bad idea, or why it needs a female author but it sounds like something an over zealous feminist would say. Wonder Woman has always been a great comic written well regardless of the sex of the author. And to say she is the only female comic character you’ve admired means you dont read very many comics. Both Dc and Marvel are full of strong independant women if thats your kick, i would suggest you read some Elektra, Alias or Birds of Prey, those are filled with great female characters, again written well regardless of the gender of the writer. If you dont like a storyline quite simply dont read it, there really isnt a need to bring in your own feminist agenda when clearly it is not needed or wanted.
i dont think its a feminist thing…. gail simone is just a better writer for wonder woman…
Its is me or it looks like they want to make Wonder Woman a tvseries a la Smallville?
In case they think Smallville is good because it lasted 10 season let me tell you something DC. Smallville sucks! The only reason is still on the air is because CW doesn’t have anything else to put in its place and they can break even over the DVD and international sales.
I’m no expert on Wonder Woman but I don’t see anything really offensive about this. I think the outfit is pretty neat
“Jim Lee has redesigned her costume for the modern era…”
If the modern era is 1993. Nice mom jeans.
Huh? Mom Jeans – are you kidding?! Since when are “Mom jeans” skin-tight, painted-on – I don’t care for the new look, but she doesn’t look like anybody’s Mom that I know!
let’s be honest here, even the dedicated fandom doesn’t care for Wonder Woman all that much, the most anyone pays attention to her is when she is with the Justice League…she has no memorable villains to speak of, no memorable supporting cast…but this is change for the sake of change and I don’t think it’s going to do any good…the amount of people who never read Wonder Woman won’t start reading it now and the ones who do read it will probably drop it
You’re right about fandom being lukewarm on WW – they kind of always have been. The George Perez and Messner-Loebs WW runs are the only ones I can think of in the last 25 years that sold particularly well. The Heinberg stuff too, I guess, for the limited number of issues he did. Straczynski should improve sales for a bit, just because he’s a popular writer.
Women superheroes in general are a tough sell to fandom. For example, with the exception of Spider-Girl, Marvel has never had a book starring a superheroine go over 60 issues in its entire publishing history.
The reason WW doesn’t have any memorable villains or supporting cast is because no creators ever build that stuff up. They always come in and want to take WW in a new direction, or introduce their own characters and concepts, instead of working on the foundation.
Disappointing. I love WonderWoman too and was looking forward to seeing her in classic uniform. The change in costume is the lazy way out.
Looks trashy…. just what we’re looking for in a role model for young girls.
Whose terrible decision was this?
Really, and a strapless swimsuit and gold cincher isn’t trashy?
And a strapless bustier and knee-high boots were better? Get a grip. A woman could conceivably wear this in public and not get cited for indecent exposure.
Well, Straczynski is a good writer and at least they didn’t kill or cripple her, a common fate for female characters in superhero comics (just google “women in refrigerators”). Iconic characters are likely to meet a similar fate: DC has repeatedly killed and/or cripples Superman and Batman, and Marvel recently garnered a fair amount of unearned publicity for killing Captain America.
Costume changes are nothing new – this will stick for a year or maybe a half a decade, then a new writer, artist or editor will go back to the classic look (with whatever minor-or-major changes they decide on).
At least she’s in low heels and isn’t showing cleavage to her navel. This is less shocking, and definitely less offensive, than the Mary Jane handwashing Spiderman’s costume debacle (google if you dare – that one’s barely SFW).
On the other hand, I don’t particularly like superheores, so I’m biased.
Um, actually, there are DEFINITELY women in refrigerators here — Diana’s mother and most of the Amazons. They’re all being killed off to drive the angst and give the hero motivation — this is the classic definition of women in refrigerators. That it’s now happening to Wonder Woman makes it doubly insulting.
And Wonder Woman is also being de-powered, so that’s more evidence of women in refrigerators syndrome.
My primary objections are to the storyline. Wonder Woman and the Amazons have had some truly awful storyline inflicted on them in recent years, and this seems like more of the same. A “streetwise” Wonder Woman just … isn’t Wonder Woman. Good things have been done before (Greg Rucka, George Perez) without dumping on everything the character is about.
Although that outfit is awful. I’m all for getting her out of the bathing-suit getup, but this looks just as ridiculous (if for different reasons).
But as comic book fan, I know this, too, will all pass. Until then, that’s less money I’ll be giving DC every month.
Really? This is just wrong.
“…she’s the only comic book character female I’ve ever admired. Of course, it took a bunch of men to ruin her…”
It also took a bunch of men to ‘create’ her.
Originally pyschologist William Moulton Marston, (“Charles Moulton”) who saw the “great educational potential of comic books”, was hired as an ‘educational consultant’ for National Periodicals and All-Winner Comics (forerunners of DC Comics) in 1941, before creating a female comic book superhero, in a field dominated by male characters.
Marston was inspired by Olive Byrne, who lived him and his wife in a ‘polygamous/polyamorous’ relationship. Having 2 children with both women, Marston said that both women served as exemplars for his character, that was subsequently illustrated by artist ‘Harry Peter’.
“Wonder Woman is psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, I believe, rule the world,” Marston wrote at the time, defending his character’s look as swell as the many references to sado-masochism in the WW stories, with every story highlighting, women being tied up either by a ‘magic lasso’, chains, ropes, etc, forcing their ‘obedience’.
“Not even girls want to be girls so long as our feminine archetype lacks force, strength, and power”, said Marston. “Not wanting to be girls, they don’t want to be tender, submissive, peace-loving as ‘good women’ are…Wonder Woman satisfies the subconscious, elaborately disguised desire of males to be mastered by a woman who loves them.”
For Marston, Wonder Woman was not primarily a role model for girls, but the vehicle through which he would get young boys used to the idea of ‘dominating’ women.
“Women are exciting for this one reason — it is the secret of women’s allure — women enjoy submission, being bound”, Marston said.
“This I bring out in the ‘Paradise Island’ sequences where the girls beg for chains and enjoy wearing them”.
Virtually all th early “Wonder Woman” stories included a full-length WW in an oversized bondage panel. In one 1948 story, there were no fewer than 75 panels depicting bondage.
“The only hope for peace is to teach people who are full of pep and unbound force is to enjoy being bound, ” said Marston.
“Only when the control of self by others is more pleasant than the unbound assertion of self in human relationships can we hope for a stable, peaceful human society. Giving to others, being controlled by them, submitting to other people cannot possibly be enjoyable without a strong erotic element…”
DC Unleashes “Wonder Woman” including early ‘bondage’ illustrations:

Well composed M and illuminating. Interesting how we patronize certain ideals and mythologies without knowing the basis of their genesis. What has largely identified as an empowering symbol plays right back into the objectifying desires of undersexed men.
Everyone involved with the decision making process to go forward on this idea needs to be fired!
It’s comics, I give this 2 years tops before everything is reversed.
Shame on Geoff Johns and Jim Lee for taking tge company’s 3d most valuable and recognizable trademark and turning her into a corny, uncool. The changes probably won’t last a year because the fan outcry is so negative, and in the very short term they’ll call it a success if it sells an extra 15,000 comics a month, but this is dumb dumb dumb and only represents a setback for the character appearing in other media — ie where the real money is — like film and TV. That leather jacket they have stuck WW in is especially cringe-worthy.
So, just to clarify, Wonder Woman has been redesigned and given a new background by the one man who either destroyed or rebirthed comics in the new century, depending on which side of the fence you sit.
The time altering is kinda cool.
It’d be better if:
1. They stop putting superheroes in the real world for once.
Let her struggle to save Paradise Island while she’s having to survive in a crumbling environment. Ever see a single mom try and
raise 4 kids in a house nearing foreclosure? THAT’s a Guardian/Savior/Protector.
2. Make her look like she’s lean and muscular as a result of living in a harsh enviornment/genetics as opposed to like she’s got a personal trainer.
3. Slap that tough girl smirk off her face. She’s above that kinda crap.
Well, No offense but Wonder Woman had a woman writing the book for the last two years, Gail Simone. the sales on the series sank like a stone and they gave her more opportunities than most writers to revamp the book. As a matter of fact the series had another popular female writer on it right before Gail, Jodi Picoult. She didn’t move the old fan-o-meter either.
frankly, male creators have done a much better job sheparding the Womder Woman franchise.
I do love that the immediate reaction is, “See? We’ve let TWO WHOLE WOMEN take a crack at it, and it failed!” Never mind the several crappy male writers the title has had over the years. It’s OK if a male writer is crap – but when a female writer is crap, it’s “See? This is why women suck at writing comic books! Give it back to a dude!”
*sighs*
I totally disagree with you! I think this outfit is great! One of the things I never liked about Wonder Woman is that we’re supposed to take her seriously even as she’s dressed like some kind of overly-patriotic cheerleader in a beauty pageant. This new look is great – and, um, PRACTICAL FOR FIGHTING CRIME. I hope it, or something like it, stays.
And more importantly, characters should be about their, um, CHARACTERS, not about their clothing. The fact that anyone would get that worked up about an outfit leads me to believe that you don’t think too much of the character herself. Who cares what she wears as long as she’s written well?
*internet high five*
You tell ‘em! Personally, I love the new costume, like you I think it’s a lot better than the hyper patriotic strapless swimsuit.
This is why DC Comics have to resort to constant reboots and relaunches. It is the only way to get press. Where were you when Gail Simone was writing a solid run of WW? Sales were spiraling downward. And this launch hasn’t even happened yet-Read WW #600 and than judge.
Wait wait, let me get this straight. You think Wonder Woman, a character created solely to appeal to its male creator’s bondage fetish, and has largely served as a roving set of breasts at various stages has been ruined NOW?
You’re one of those people who complained about how they ruined Alvin and the Chipmunks aren’t you?
My question is ’save her from what?’ Now if it’s from fanboy apathy, then you’ve gotta at least give DC credit for trying to up the Amazing Amazon’s profile. DC took the tack of having a female writer helm the book and it was met with moderate success. Now they’ve got JMS, a popular television writer and comic fan-favorite steering the ship. Hopefully that will help increase readership on a book that hasn’t cracked the top ten list in forever, which is sad considering the status of WW as an icon in comics.
I will say this…hate the jacket.
I totally dig the outfit. Maybe I am in the minority, but I had always thought her outfit looked entirely lame — I mean, it was painfully stupid-looking.
Now she doesn’t look ridiculous. Finally.
Thanks, DC!
I wish they would stop making EVERY comic book heroine into a sex goddess! Why does she have to top the Barbie Doll in her anatomically UN-correct propertions?!?!? Just another male dominated industry; allowing males to pen their lust for the world to see. Let them read the XXX comics that are flourishing in the world and leave our childhood heroes out of their pubescent undertakings. Now everyone surely understands how comic writers and especially artists are in bed with the plastic surgeons!
Why does she have to top the Barbie Doll in her anatomically UN-correct propertions?!?!?
Because she is a divinely conceived, Amazonian princess who represents the stylized, classical ideal of female beauty and physical ability. Check out some original statues of the ancient Greek gods. I guarantee they don’t look like anyone you know in real life. That’s the point — they’re better than us.
By the way, most guys don’t look like Superman either. Get a grip, they’re superheroes.
Oh… you mean like she has been for the past 60+ years?
It’s for the movie. The producers probable feel they will get bombarded by the feminists if they put the actress in Wonder Womans tradional costume. Besides, I don’t know of a talented actress today voluptious enough to fill it! Maybe Heidi Montag? No, not enough… talent.
Oh get a grip, people. This is comics and it is a temporary storyline. Stop being over dramatic!!
You’d swear WW died. Oh wait she did once!
You’d swear she never had a costume change…oh wait…
You’d swear her love interest of decades was changed..oh wait…
You get my drift.
Finally. Someone with knowledge of the actual material. Drrr. It’s TEMPORARY. Geesh.
Heh.
This is as routine a device in comics as staples of sitcom plots. Don’t worry so much the traditional spankies and bra look will come back with much fanfare nothing to worry about.
How can anyone fight crime in jeans? Unless they’re “jeggings” and even then, barf.
First of all, WW hasn’t been written well since Greg Rucka’s run. Simone’s run for the most part was…..well….meh. I mean it didn’t suck but, there’s a reason so many people dropped the book. And Don’t get me started on the shit on paper that was Jodi Picoult’s run. Good God man, after Amazon’s attack, I think wiping the slate clean is the best thing the character needed. So, I’m all for this thing that JMS is doing. If it doesn’t work out, well, it can easily be reverted. Quite frankly, this is what the character really needs. Though I’m not too fond of the lack of powers at first. That shit didn’t work in the 60’s, I doubt it will work out today.
I”m still annoyed with DC for replacing the eagle she used to have on her costume with the W she’s been wearing for the last 20 some odd years. Bring back the classic costume guys!!!
I wouldn’t have realized this was horrible if you hadn’t told me. Thanks for setting me straight. That’s what a good news outlet does.
Joe Straczynski has done things I liked, and things I haven’t liked. This looks like it will fall into the latter.
Wonder Woman’s biggest (temporary) change happened back when “The Avengers” was still on television. DC decided that Wonder Woman, a comic that wasn’t selling, needed more a Diana Rigg super-spy flavor. So there was the “i Ching” storyline that did away with Amazon Island, her superpowers, and put her in a cat suit. The name “Wonder Woman” only appeared on the cover during this time, and she was only known as Diana Prince. This change lasted roughly two years before she reverted back to her iconic design.
Jim Lee’s design will last maybe a year at best. Jackets went out with the X-men’s Rogue when Jim Lee worked on that series in the 90’s.
Yeah, I’m a nerd.
The only person who could relate to this version of Wonder Woman is In Living Color-era Jennifer Lopez.
Wonder Woman has up until now been written by great writer Gail Simone, but has been selling in the 20k range every month. 20,000 copies a month for a character that DC considers part of it’s “Trinity” with Batman and Superman. Batman and Superman and their related characters are in multiple comic titles every month, whereas Wonder Woman can barely support her own singular title. Not to mention Batman and Superman have movie franchises, Wonder Woman does not, despite Joss Whedom himself taking a crack at it.
Is it any wonder DC has brought on a great writer like JMS to relaunch her? JMS brough Thor from a B-list middling sales character to an A-list top 10 selling book a couple of years ago, so he has the touch.
I’m female and I like it. The old costume was the biggest hinderance for the movie getting made becaues it’s incredibly sexist. This gives her a bit more freedom, though it is less superhero “costume-like” than it is an outfit.
I think this has less to do with “ruining” the character and more to do with establishing a more film-friendly version of the character. Face it, the original Wonder Woman costume would never hold up in the era of The Dark Knight.
People complained about the “electric blue” Superman of a few years ago, although it resulted in an interesting storyline where Superman had to learn how to control his new electro-magnetic powers, and his new vulnerability as a depowered Clark Kent.
It’s an alternative timeline.
It’s not permanent.
The biggest millstone around any DC or Marvel writer’s neck is this: affecting change without effecting change to the character. JMS has created an alternative timeline which allows him to tell some interesting stories without harming the “real” Wonder Woman. Could some of those ideas filter into the “real” DC Universe? Sure.
I’m reserving judgement until I read the stories.
(I wonder (sorry) if we’ll see alternative versions of the other superheroes?)
Meanwhile, fans still have the various collections, including “mod” Diana.
Looking at Lee’s design above, her bustline has been de-emphasized, unlike the exclusive illustration shown previously. Of course, one could find drawings of the classic WW which do the same thing.
Now, a question… why are fans up in arms over Wonder Woman’s new look, but nobody says a thing when Catwoman or Supergirl changes her union suit?
All they did was morph Wonder Woman with Black Canary. Big whoop.
DC will inevitably reboot their entire universe another 5-6 times this decade anyway, so what does it matter? They can’t simply write fresh stories for their classic characters, they’d rather come up with endless “epic” stunts designed to try their readers’ patience time and time again.
Wake me up when they’ve rebooted themselves back to 1993.
Jenette Kahn really was a Wonder Woman for DC Comics, bringing the line world wide respect for a reason. It was under her leadership that Wonder Woman was brought to levels of sales, class and respect under the guidance of master George Perez.
She truly was a pioneer; one of a kind, that Jenette. Because she had an eye for talent, taste and DC thrived under her guidance because of her expertise.
I questioned Diane Nelson’s judgment when I heard she hired the Three Stooges to fill the one vacant publisher position. After seeing this, it’s become clear that not only does Diane Nelson not even have a care or clue, it’s obvious she doesn’t even look at the products that bear her name. Because no self-respecting, intelligent individual would look at this and say, ‘Hey, great idea guys!’
JMS: “Suppose you woke up one morning, or turned a corner, and suddenly the life you had been leading up to that moment…was not the life you were leading.
“Suppose someone went back in time and changed one thing, and it changed your life to the point that you had little or no memory of what life had been like before the change happened.”
Isn’t this what JMS did when he and Quesada ruined Spider-Man?
Agreed. I saw what the prima-donna JMS was doing to Spider-man and I would shake with terror at the thought of this maniac running wild in the DC Universe.
My fears have officially come to pass.
Oh don’t forget… this guy’s also going to be writing Superman too.
I know Gail Simone wasn’t selling a lot of books. But surely they could have found a female writer in ANY medium to take a crack at this character.
JMS’ main writing skills involve “tweaking” origins that don’t need tweaking, awkwardly jamming political views in readers’ faces, and generally sending books flying off a cliff into oblivion.
DC fans are screwed.
Acctually, JMS didn’t want to reboot spider-man and do “Brand New Day”. It was largely the reason he left ASM, because Quesada had been determined for YEARS since becoming EIC at Marvel that Spider-Man shouldn’t be married. He had been talking about it for years in articles and finally decided to pull the trigger. JMS was disillusioned because he had been the guy shepherding the title back into being a good one, and really wanted to pursue what happened in the aftermath of Peter revealing his secret identity (which happened barely a YEAR before the reboot of One More Day). When they said “hey, we’re wishing it all away” JMS said no thanks and left. Iyou read his run, the core of it centered around Peter and MJ’s marriage and relationship, specifically their reconciliation after being seperated for several years in the book- another Quesada demand. He basically believed MJ was as essential to Peter as Uncle Ben’s death (and I kind of agree with him).
I looked up some interviews, and JMS’s thoughts on his WW run is that wants to use this alternate timeline to get a view of Diana outside what people perceive her as. His specific example is she has become a classic Porche that everyone loves and admires, but is too afraid to take out of the garage and drop the hammer on. I think it’s the same problem that Superman and the Fantastic Four books encounter every few years. People are too enamored with the history they end up retelling safe versions of their favorite stories without advancing the character.
I stopped reading Spider-Man regularly when JMS poured poison on Gwen Stacy by trying to think readers were stupid enough to believe she had bastard kids with Spider-Man’s greatest enemy.
I think its telling though, more about JMS than anything else that, he left Spider-Man because of a story whose premise went something like this…
‘Parker wakes up one morning with his memories wiped and his history changed by a dark menace who by changing one event, destroyed his prior life. Oh, and it took place 20 years ago.’
That was the bad idea called ‘One More Day’.
Moves over to DC to write Wonder Woman under the following premise: “Wonder Woman wakes up one morning with her memories wiped and her history changed by a dark menace who, by changing one event, destroyed her prior life. The change in her history occurred 20 years ago.”
Actually, I heard that Joe Quesada placed an emergency call on the Red Phone at the DC offices, demanding 1/2 credit for the bad idea.
Yeah, they did that with Star Trek too. Too bad it didn’t work– oh wait, yeah, it did…

I really don’t understand the reaction to all of this… Just like the public to react to what a woman wears rather than the ideas being put forth or to try and see something from a different perspective. I WAS a longtime Wonder Woman reader for the past 15 years and recently stopped during the Gail Simone run… NOT because it was particularly bad or because it lacked anything that made Wonder Woman who she is… It was just that I got bored with it altogether. In fact, I got bored with all comics down the line and haven’t been to my LCS in about 8 months. I would really like to challenge the majority of the comments being made and ask if the people making them have ever PICKED UP a Wonder Woman comic. Now I’m not saying this new costume is going to gain any widespread readership, I highly doubt it. But at the very least, it’s got ME curious. It’s got me thinking of Wonder Woman…It’s got a lot of people thinking of Wonder Woman. On that level it has worked. I really detest comic fans when they bitch about any new direction without even reading it before making a judgment. And it’s insulting to think that the iconic idea of Wonder Woman hinges on whether or not she’s sporting her star-spangled panties
if you’re going to change everything about an iconic female character, you may as well create a new one (wouldn’t hurt to have one more). So go ahead and appeal to the young goths with their own jeans-wearing modern vixen (costume complete with ipod holster) and give adults the Wonder Woman they remember and love.
That costume is stupid beyond my ability to be clever. Just misguided, dated and totally unappealing to both girls and boys.
That said, Nikki’s suggestion that only women should write about women implies that only men should write about men. In that case, a lot of women will be getting pink slips. Way to go! Great job!
I have read WW since childhood. This woman’s opinion, the costume is irrelevant, though I have to admit I have no idea what goth mag they got their ideas from. It certainly doesn’t make me think she’s more modern or that she’ll “blend.”
The appeal for me of WW was the Diana’s integrity and conviction that everyone was worth supporting and fighting for and everyone could do great things. This avenging angel fighting with almost childlike singlemindedness appealed to me as a child and still appeals to me as a mother now. She represented an ideal with characteristics I internalized.
The whole idea of “street cred” makes me flinch because it sounds more coarse than the WW I admired. I am withholding judgement, but the idea of making WW darker or bitter or streetwise worries me. We’ll just have to see.
How can you criticize the comic book that has released one issue? Have you read it yet? Why do you think it’s fair to criticize J. Michael Straczynski or Jim Lee, both of whom have done nothing but create incredible comic book stories and art throughout the years? You don’t like the new jacket. Fine. But do not attack the writers and DC staff for trying something new. Comics exists in a world of rebooting and retooling and Wonder Woman is in dire need of something new. These people know this character, her world and her audience more than you ever will. Don’t call them dumbasses. You’re good at writing about what you know: write about that. Also, I cannot recall the last time a woman writer wrote for WW so that’s not the issue.
Wonder Woman hasn’t been a good read for years, no matter the plumbing of the people creating her. I saw somewhere years ago that rather than cancel her, they have to keep publishing as she is one of the few (if not only) flagship characters still owned by the estate of her creator, ie the Marston family, and if DC stops publishing, the family gets all the rights to her back. By the way, they tried the short black jacket in the 90’s on her, and it was paired with some unfortunate bicycle shorts as Diana had lost the title to some other uninteresting character. Guess what? She got it back!!
Wonder Woman should have not changed to reflect temporary modern fashions. She should remain timeless as a great American Icon and glass ceiling breaker. What a foolish mistake.
I don’t get how this is ruining Wonder Woman? And Nikki is blaming men for ruining it??
Does she actually want Wonder Woman in American flag underwear?? At least she has pants on now.
She looks like she stepped out of the ‘Beat It’ video. I like the bodice and the new belt. I might even let he head piece slide, but everything else is just horrible. I hate the choker. Lose the jacket. Ridiculous. Next, they’ll put Clark Kent in a bolo tie. You could even keep the pants but give her the red boots for contrast. Why does DC have such difficulties with costume updates and movies? They should take cues from God of War. Make her a modern day warrior with the old style of her culture and the stories that influence Greek mythology. I would gave her boots with wings painted on them like Hermes. Bracelets with lightning bolts down them for Zeus. Arrows for Athena, A shield with the Sun on it for Apollo. things like that but amp it up and modernize a little. Not an update of a break dancer from the 80’s.
History repeating:
And let’s not forget Warner Bros’ disastrous attempt to reinvent Wonder Woman for a TV movie with Cathy Lee Crosby – - before getting it right with the Lynda Carter classic version that returned to the original comic that everyone loved:
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/merman1967/Superheroes/WonderWomanLive-CathyLeeCrosby2.jpg
I actually read the Wonder Woman title and I have to say it was good for awhile but then the stories got weak and weird. I agree DC is not a charity and should do what they can to revitalize a book but this will not go over well. Red/blue Superman? Iron Spiderman? Not big sellers for either company. Hell, even Superboy got rid of his jacket and was clowning about wearing it not too long ago.
I can’t, for the life of me, understand why everyone is so upset about the new costume. As if the original tube-top and panties costume were MORE empowering toward women???
The new digs are great. Hopefully the new updates make her more appealing to Hollywood and they finally make a movie about her.
You fanboys(and girls) need to take a deep breath and chill out.
The gender bigotted views that only people of a particular group can write stories about individuals of a particular group are signs of a true lack of education, lack of honor, and lack of ethics. Next you’ll be telling me adult female teachers having sexual relations with boys under the age of 18 should be legal because “it happens less often than adult men do it to girls”. :.
I LOVE alternate reality stories and storylines. Sometimes, I take umbrage at the idea that a beloved series is going to be “rebooted”, but find the alteration interesting in the end for the alternate possibilities. How many “What if…” stories have others read? How about Kal El appearing 1000 years or more ago? These alternate reality stories and multiverse stories are great. I love these types of stories and if you don’t, fine, don’t read them. I won’t even try to encourage you to like them, any more than I should suddenly stop disliking something YOU like. Using bigotry of ANY type to justify a dislike for something is truly and utterly ignorant and baffoonish to an extreme.
This happened to Wonder Woman in the 1970’s. The sales went down and the original costume came back. This will pass and just like 35 plus years ago Diana will be back to her original form.
Wow, what a shock. A man hating, man blaming blog about Wonder Woman changes.
Where were YOU when sales utterly tanked in the past few years? This run has had TWO female writers on it out of three, so to say DC didn’t tap any females is ridiculous.
Simone is writing Birds of Prey again AND Secret Six. Simone has been on the book since issue FOURTEEN. How many other prominent, as in their names will likely garner attention and sales, female writers are there right now?
If these changes were initiated by Simone, would you still be so bitter?
Get over yourself. Seriously.
I’ve been with this book since the Perez days, meaning EVERY single issue in that span, and while I’m not terribly thrilled with JMS’s ideas for this or Superman, I’m at least going to give it a shot and see where it goes. At least DC is TRYING to justify her position in the “Trinity,” considering her book routinely lands in the lower end of sales for a title supposedly befitting such a mantle.
And sure the costume is a 90s throwback, but do we know for a fact WHEN the story in this “alternate” take happens? And I know how dare a MAN take her out of the cheesecake boob corset, heels and butt huggers? Crazy.
Why don’t you dial back your sexism long enough to, I don’t know, READ the issues before bashing them and, again, were you one of us 25,443 who got the last issue? The book lost 8,000 readers in the past year and started with over 53,000 when Simone took over in November 2007 and has lost MORE THAN HALF the readership since then. Now DC is trying something to reverse that trend, and they’re letting Gail rock on with Birds and Secret Six.
@Tran, bravo for the comment. That’s precisely what’s wrong with tv/movies now. They’re dumbing down to people’s level, rather than providing aspirational characters ppl look up to. Everything’s become coarse and common because execs have no guts so they’re just pandering and mirroring the lcd. It’s not even a working strategy. Meanwhile, Nikki’s right about this. Gawd dudes can be so tedious and predictable in their simpleton sexualization of women. It’s like, well if we have to depict a powerful woman we’ll make sure to hyper-sexualize her to keep her in her place. Boring one-dimensional toads ruining everything
————————–
“And don’t get me started on the whole idea of Wonder Woman being “street tough” so people can “relate to her.” You’re not supposed to relate to her, you’re supposed to look up to her due to her Greek mythological-based origin as one of the Amazons. This is particularly what female fans related to. That’s even worse than the costume change. “
Wonder Woman is one of the most iconic characters in the history of comic books and I don’t see anything wrong with a little sex appeal. Part of her characterization has always been her striking beauty. Costume changes are almost never a good idea for super-heroes and this one won’t last either.
Saying Jodi Picoult’s run on WW was bad is being kind; She had no fundamental understanding of WW as a whole. And Gail Simone’s run, while better, didn’t do anything to improve the character. It just tried to incorporate as many of the concepts from WW TV show as she could, to mediocre effect.
DC made it a point to seek out female writers on Wonder Woman and it hasn’t worked. I applaud them for trying, but saying it needs a female writer to be good is like saying only a man can write a male character. I think everyone would agree that is just as condescending. But just as bad to me, is judging the work before it occurs.
JMS was the guy that rebooted Thor to the point that his book became a top seller again AND made the character attractive as a movie property. JMS was the guy that wrote the original script that got people excited about making a Thor movie. So to act like this guy is some piker off the street who doesn’t know character or mythology is wrong. He re-invograted Thor and made the pantheon of Norse Gods interesting by getting to the root of the character.
So JMS is having the Gods mess with Diana by mucking with her past? Hmm….Gods messing with demi-gods and mortals? I recall that was pretty much 60% of what the Greek Gods used to do. 30% was screwing any mortal they threw their gaze upon, and the last 10% was screwing over each other. If anything, I think he already has a handle on the mythology right there.
More than anything else, though, it’s not just the idea, it’s the execution. The logline for the Godfather would be “a generational tale of a mafia family.” Interesting but hardly an earth shattering, high-concept pitch. It’s all in the execution. Here’s a CRAZY notion, let’s read an issue before we decide it’s crap because, oh wait- that’s the only way to see if it’s crap.
As for the costume, meh. I like the original outfit but still, it’s a woman in a Eagle and Stars and Stripes themed bathing suit. With knee-high, high-heeled boots. You can make the argument it is a classic look. You can also make the argument that it looks like a stripper outfit. I mean, high-heeled boots for an Amazonian warrior? That’s 3rd shift at the Spearmint Rhino, right there. It always has bugged me they put her in heels. She’s an Amazon and 6ft tall. Put her in flats for God’s sake. It was good enough for Audrey Hepburn, it’s good enough for her.
But again, I haven’t read a single panel of the new book. So I’ll wait to pass judgement. I’ll just sit here and judge all of you.
Silently.
Cruelly.
Oh, wait, it’s Wednesday. New Comic Day. Nevermind. Have a great day all!
As a female, I have to say I like it. If I was fighting crime I’d be wearing something that gave better limb coverage too. The old costume is iconic, but also cheesy and sexist to the point where suspension of disbelief is hard in today’s world. I agree with the other commenters who’ve brought up great points about the fact the if you love/respect the character, then it shouldn’t matter what she’s wearing. As Mr. Sanchez said, “And it’s insulting to think that the iconic idea of Wonder Woman hinges on whether or not she’s sporting her star-spangled panties”.
Exactly.
Why the HELL… What the HELL… Who the HELL… How the HELL…
I can’t wait to watch DC burn for this. One of the most glaringly idiotic, stupid and brain dead decisions in the HISTORY of entertainment, let alone comic books. Wonder Woman was close to trumping Superman and Batman in my opinion. Just when she was on the edge of becoming the most fascinating character in the whole comic book universe, they pull the plug and reboot with epic stupidity. I pray to GOD this is like Spider Man’s black costume… a TEMPORARY lapse in judgement, soon to be corrected and forgotten.
Queen Diana is dead! Long live the Queen! Wonder Woman, where have you gone!
I like the costume change, I think it’s LONG overdue. People complain when women in comics show skin, then when they’re covered up, people still complain. DC will never win that debate.
Also, what about this new costume is Goth? Last time I checked, Goths wore all black and heavy black make-up. This is a sleeker design, if anything.
People forget that Wonder Woman moved into the city by no choice. In doing so she had to adapt to her surrounding. Changing of her clothes needed to be done. It wasn’t realistic to life. She’s not the woman of steel. If she had to slide down on the pavement in a bikini, guess what she would have some of the ugliest skin for a superhero. It is pretty sexist for her to be running around in a bikini. There’s no woman alive that can run 60 yards in high heels. Change is good she will always be sexy and pleasant to the eyes. If we were to see a sexy woman on the street with her clothes on we would say “DAMN”. But they do need to loose the jacket. this is not “Smallville”.
I think the costume looks okay, but the old one was better. She looked like more of a warrior in it. I think if they were going to change her look, they should have tweaked the old costume instead of creating a new one. Maybe give it more a greek warrior goddess look. Something like her armor that she occasionally wears but toned down close to the level of her usual costume. Basically like the Wonder Woman-type costume Erica Durance wore on Smallville.
Anyone think this resembles Megan Fox?? Hmmmmmm. Im not a big reader of comic books but I love the big screen adaptations. Does Wonder Woman need an update for the big screen….sure she does. But in the end whats gonna sell tickets are those long legs and big boobs all pushed up. Im not being sexist just saying thats what most men like about Wonder Woman. Shes tough, sexy and the American Dream.
I’ve never care for WW, visually nor story wise. I got bored being her new bio thing or whatever and just looked at the new costume. I like this costume, I like that they’re taking a flagship heroine and putting her into something sensible and not leaving her as eye-candy. Then again, I have no problem with the costume, I don’t really understand the cuffs of the pants and the boots/shoes but whatever. It’s not the silliest aspect of clothing ever. I don’t understand why people hate it, It’s a jacket, tank top and leather/denim pants. That’s shit people wear all the time.
What a horrible looking costume! What happened to the red, white, and blue that was so authentic and American looking. The original Wonder Woman is an American icon. This new Wonder Woman does not look like Wonder Woman at all. Please DC get rid of this ugly costume and bring the old one back. If you want to put long leggings on her, fine, but keep the red, white, and blue and the cheery smile on her face.
Hire Stephanie Meyer to write Wonder Woman!
J/K . . . I think. It could boost sales though!
This kind of continuity tweaking that is happening so often is driving people away from comics. And why does this plot sound so familiar to readers of Spider-Man: One More Day. That was crap. Doesn’t DC know the reactions over at their competition?
Suppose…suppose we’re sick of ‘big’ status quo changes and just want good writing? Suppose that JMS.
PS: jackets aren’t terrible. Spandex is terrible. That’s why you were one in public, and not the other.
If you didn’t want her design to change, maybe you all should have bought more issues of Wonder Woman before #600.
Oh whats that? You’ve never read or bought a Wonder Woman comic in your life? Well that changes everything.
Wonder Woman was in a rut for years before this. Yes its obviously a change in order to attract more readers, but people complaining about this have no one to blame but themselves, when the only time they even think about Wonder Woman is when it appears in the mass news media.
So Nikki, a man can’t write as well as a woman is what you’re saying? Quit being such a bigot you evil misandrist! (in case you can’t tell (probable) I’m mocking your hypocritical feminist outrage)
Well, it’s still only been “hours” since the news was released and like this site the rest of the blogos is already chalked full of angry and indifferent commentaries. I think they’ve achieved their end goal. Shake things up, get folk’s attention ((Check!)). Bikini-clad WW will be back soon as the dust settles.
This costume sucks, but it will prove as temporary as any of WW’s wardrobe changes over the years. She’s an icon; you can tweak the look a bit here and there – no skirt anymore like she used to wear in the 40s – but fundamentally, you can’t completely change it. At least not permanently. No different than Spider-Man, Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel, Captain America, etc.
The various film attempts have also struggled with the costume issue (I remember Joss Whedon talked about it a bit). But again, if they end up straying too far from the classic look, it will completely fail.
The more insulting thing to me, is when male creators like Straczynski come aboard WW, they always go on about how they need to “fix” her by going off on a tangent and injecting all kinds of new stuff into the mythos. Dennis O’Neil’s late 60s revamp stands as a prime, early example of this. WW doesn’t need fixing. She just needs a good writer who gets what she’s all about. It doesn’t sound like Straczynski does to me, but he’s a popular creator – moreso than the talented Gail Simone, which is why DC made a switch – so the comic sales will probably reflect that for a while.
Why is everyone up in an uproar? This is only temporary! I give it 6 issues before the star spangled shorts come back. Anyone remember when she cut her hair short and it came out in the news too? Where’s the short hair now?
Or when she changed outfits when Artemis became WW? All gone. So shall this pass too.
No one really reads Wonder Woman anyway. DC keeps her around for merchandising purposes but that’s about it. Only a small handful of us gives a darn.
I like it. A relevant Wonder Woman, appropriately dressed for battle. She was my favorite comic character growing up. Can she save our world while she’s at it?
I don’t like the new look of Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is the one huge female heroine that is easily identifiable by her iconic look. What’s next? Change Dorothy’s ruby red slippers in The Wizard of Oz to high tops?
Well, Dorothy’s slippers were silver before they became ruby.
I like it.
The old classic look was starting to look silly these days. Good job with the revamp, but Jim Lee’s concept image was much better than Don’s inflated oversexed version.
Most complainers will not have read a WW story in years, decades, or ever.
Costume changes are always temporary, and origin changes are too
But the fact remains WW’s sales have been horrible for many decades.
I like the new look & costume. it makes more sense in a universe where she is a warrior. & she’ll be taken more seriously than a dominatrix to be lusted after.
“Of course, it took a bunch of men to ruin her.”
It took a couple of men to create her back in the 1940s. Look who’s telling people not to get their facts wrong.
never a good idea to put MORE clothes on a female.women are(and should be)judged by thier looks, and this looks bad.bring back the shorty shorts
wonder woman finaly gets a make over and some one finaly daring to try and make her become more hip to new fans and to some of her fans its as if dc decided lets totaly destroy the last part of the trinity by giving her a long over due make over.for she will be back to the old look in time jm is just trying to make wonder woman better for new fans and old fans the run deserves at least a chance. besides wonder woman is still wonder woman no matter a make over.
(Lurker loudmouth extrodeanre De-cloaking for something important)
WHat they want to ignore is that her beauty and even her (GASP) sexuality are part of her character. Not the whole character but that is what (to use a worn out metaphor) Gets the buts through the doors and in the seats. Now I will admit that I don’t partake of WW book normally because of my rock bottom Finances and being an X-zombie. (Though DO NOT get me started on what a car wreck in slow motion “Second Coming” has been.)But the times I have, I have enjoyed the stories. And the whole Destroy Paradise Island in the past thing. HuH? And any artist worth there salt will tell you that drawing black pants is just and artist being lazy and saving time. And how many times did JMS use the word “Accessories”. AHH.. Wonder Woman here not dress up Barbie. Quite frankly I don’t know if this is a ploy to get more female readership (and for the record I have now problem getting more butts in the seats no matter what sex those buts are) Since woman who have never read the book might have a problem with the classic costume, Might “judge a book by its cover” and think it was all cheesecake no story. But this is just going too far in the other direction.
Remember a few years ago when Artimis took over? Diana still adventured in an outfit that was Bike or work out shorts with a.. How would you describe that top she was warring anyway? I think that would have worked with the traditional Red, White Blue and Gold coloring of hers. The jacket always, to me, was an unnecessary attempt to cover her beauty. Why?
Fans will kill this in the end. Maybe the “time line has changed her history” crap will stay. But this has change back written all over it.
And a related note. First the “No up skirt/bike shorts only” rule for Supergirl. Now this ugly out fit for WW. They going to give Powergirl and Starfire breast reduction surgeries next?
I think it’s pretty hot, but from a business standpoint I’d be willing to bet that the revamped look would sell more tickets if the top of her outfit was invisible like her famous jet.
This is giving DC Comics exactly what they want…publicity for a character who has been around forever, and whose sales haven’t been as great as others of late. Make these changes, and people will check it out for a bit of time.
Exactly what they wanted.
She looks like a grown up version of Sailor Mercury.
Introduce her to Edward scissorhands and let him show you idiots how to make her custume over. Or better yet should of left her alone.
To a large degree, Wonder Woman and Vampirella are the same: the costume IS the character! I was looking forward to the JMS run but now I’ll be boycotting it. It’s trite, lame, derivative and desperate in every aspect. Put her in her classic costume and make the stories FUN. Now there’s an idea. Unfortunately, DC only knows epic. Sigh.
This will end badly
She could put an eye out with those breasts…
