DEADLINE EXCLUSIVE: Don Kramer’s Wonder Woman
DC Comics announced that, starting today, Wonder Woman “will appear like you’ve never seen her before”. And I wish they’d just left her alone, especially since she’s the only comic book character female I’ve ever admired. Of course, it took a bunch of men to ruin her. Look at the new costume design by DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee below: she looks ready for Goth Day at the Sherman Oaks Galleria. (Shame on Diane Nelson, the head of DC Entertainment, for allowing this to happen. And for not finding a talented woman writer now as in years past to update the icon’s saga.) Here’s the announcement about the dumbass stuff that DC Comics is doing to her. So let me start the campaign: FREE WONDER WOMAN!
DC Comics Co-Publisher and bestselling artist Jim Lee has redesigned her costume for the modern era, just in time for BABYLON 5 creator and critically acclaimed writer J. Michael Straczynski and artists Don Kramer and Michael Babinski to launch the Amazon Princess into an exciting and epic new era of adventure.
Starting with their story in WONDER WOMAN #600, which is in comic shops today, Straczynski and Kramer will begin a run that is both forward-looking and true to the legendary character, planting her firmly in the modern era.
Here’s what J. Michael Straczynski had to say:
“Suppose you woke up one morning, or turned a corner, and suddenly the life you had been leading up to that moment…was not the life you were leading.
“Suppose someone went back in time and changed one thing, and it changed your life to the point that you had little or no memory of what life had been like before the change happened. What would you do to get it back? Should you get it back? Who did it? And maybe more important…why did they do it?
“That is the question faced by Diana starting in issue 600.
“The Gods, for reasons of their own but which may have something to with their survival and perhaps the survival of Earth itself, have changed the timeline. In the new timeline, years ago the Gods removed their protection from Paradise Island, and left it vulnerable to attack. And attacked it was. Led by a dark figure, a veritable army descended upon the Island, equipped with weapons that could kill even the Amazons. Outgunned, doomed, Hippolyta gave over her three-year-old daughter to a handful of guardians who spirited her away as Hippolyta led one last desperate battle against the forces that had come to destroy all she had created. In that final battle, she and most of the Amazons were killed, though some managed to escape.
“It’s now nearly twenty years later. Diana has been raised in an urban setting, but with a foot in both worlds. She has little or no memory of the other timeline. She knows only what she’s been told by those who raised her On the run, hunted, she must try to survive, help the other refugee Amazons escape the army that is still after them, discover who destroyed Paradise Island and why…and if the timeline can be corrected or not. She also does not yet have access to her full powers, but will be gaining them as she goes. Along the way, she will face a range of enemies — human and otherwise — who we have not seen before.
“What we also haven’t seen before is her new look, the first significant change in her appearance since the character debuted in 1941 (not counting the mod look used briefly in the sixties, about which the less said the better). It reflects her origins in both the outside world and the world of Amazons: tough, elegant…a street-fighter’s look which also incorporates elements of her classic design. It reflects the two sides warring for ultimate victory, and underscores the path she must take.
It’s a look designed to be taken seriously as a warrior, in partial answer to the many female fans over the years who’ve asked, “how does she fight in that thing without all her parts falling out?”) She can close it up to pass unnoticed…open it for the freedom to fight…lose the jacket or keep it on…it has pockets (the other fan question, “where does she carry anything in that outfit?”, it can be accessorized…it’s a Wonder Woman look designed for the 21st century. The bracelets are still there, but made more colorful, tied on the inside and over the hand, with a script W on each of them that form WW when she holds them side by side…and if you get hit by one of them, it leaves a W mark. This is a Wonder Woman who signs her work…letting her enemies know that she’s getting closer.
“This is Wonder Woman reborn, literally and metaphorically: fast, elegant, tough, smart…the savior of her people, their guardian and protector…avenging the fall of Paradise Island, searching to discover why Paradise Island was abandoned by the gods. In the end, what she discovers will change her life and the world forever…and she will come face to face with a decision that will mean life or death for the entire human race.”

So, just to clarify, Wonder Woman has been redesigned and given a new background by the one man who either destroyed or rebirthed comics in the new century, depending on which side of the fence you sit.
The time altering is kinda cool.
It’d be better if:
1. They stop putting superheroes in the real world for once.
Let her struggle to save Paradise Island while she’s having to survive in a crumbling environment. Ever see a single mom try and
raise 4 kids in a house nearing foreclosure? THAT’s a Guardian/Savior/Protector.
2. Make her look like she’s lean and muscular as a result of living in a harsh enviornment/genetics as opposed to like she’s got a personal trainer.
3. Slap that tough girl smirk off her face. She’s above that kinda crap.
Well, No offense but Wonder Woman had a woman writing the book for the last two years, Gail Simone. the sales on the series sank like a stone and they gave her more opportunities than most writers to revamp the book. As a matter of fact the series had another popular female writer on it right before Gail, Jodi Picoult. She didn’t move the old fan-o-meter either.
frankly, male creators have done a much better job sheparding the Womder Woman franchise.
I do love that the immediate reaction is, “See? We’ve let TWO WHOLE WOMEN take a crack at it, and it failed!” Never mind the several crappy male writers the title has had over the years. It’s OK if a male writer is crap – but when a female writer is crap, it’s “See? This is why women suck at writing comic books! Give it back to a dude!”
*sighs*
I totally disagree with you! I think this outfit is great! One of the things I never liked about Wonder Woman is that we’re supposed to take her seriously even as she’s dressed like some kind of overly-patriotic cheerleader in a beauty pageant. This new look is great – and, um, PRACTICAL FOR FIGHTING CRIME. I hope it, or something like it, stays.
And more importantly, characters should be about their, um, CHARACTERS, not about their clothing. The fact that anyone would get that worked up about an outfit leads me to believe that you don’t think too much of the character herself. Who cares what she wears as long as she’s written well?
*internet high five*
You tell ‘em! Personally, I love the new costume, like you I think it’s a lot better than the hyper patriotic strapless swimsuit.
This is why DC Comics have to resort to constant reboots and relaunches. It is the only way to get press. Where were you when Gail Simone was writing a solid run of WW? Sales were spiraling downward. And this launch hasn’t even happened yet-Read WW #600 and than judge.
Wait wait, let me get this straight. You think Wonder Woman, a character created solely to appeal to its male creator’s bondage fetish, and has largely served as a roving set of breasts at various stages has been ruined NOW?
You’re one of those people who complained about how they ruined Alvin and the Chipmunks aren’t you?
My question is ‘save her from what?’ Now if it’s from fanboy apathy, then you’ve gotta at least give DC credit for trying to up the Amazing Amazon’s profile. DC took the tack of having a female writer helm the book and it was met with moderate success. Now they’ve got JMS, a popular television writer and comic fan-favorite steering the ship. Hopefully that will help increase readership on a book that hasn’t cracked the top ten list in forever, which is sad considering the status of WW as an icon in comics.
I will say this…hate the jacket.
I totally dig the outfit. Maybe I am in the minority, but I had always thought her outfit looked entirely lame — I mean, it was painfully stupid-looking.
Now she doesn’t look ridiculous. Finally.
Thanks, DC!
I wish they would stop making EVERY comic book heroine into a sex goddess! Why does she have to top the Barbie Doll in her anatomically UN-correct propertions?!?!? Just another male dominated industry; allowing males to pen their lust for the world to see. Let them read the XXX comics that are flourishing in the world and leave our childhood heroes out of their pubescent undertakings. Now everyone surely understands how comic writers and especially artists are in bed with the plastic surgeons!
Why does she have to top the Barbie Doll in her anatomically UN-correct propertions?!?!?
Because she is a divinely conceived, Amazonian princess who represents the stylized, classical ideal of female beauty and physical ability. Check out some original statues of the ancient Greek gods. I guarantee they don’t look like anyone you know in real life. That’s the point — they’re better than us.
By the way, most guys don’t look like Superman either. Get a grip, they’re superheroes.
Oh… you mean like she has been for the past 60+ years?
It’s for the movie. The producers probable feel they will get bombarded by the feminists if they put the actress in Wonder Womans tradional costume. Besides, I don’t know of a talented actress today voluptious enough to fill it! Maybe Heidi Montag? No, not enough… talent.
Oh get a grip, people. This is comics and it is a temporary storyline. Stop being over dramatic!!
You’d swear WW died. Oh wait she did once!
You’d swear she never had a costume change…oh wait…
You’d swear her love interest of decades was changed..oh wait…
You get my drift.
Finally. Someone with knowledge of the actual material. Drrr. It’s TEMPORARY. Geesh.
Heh.
This is as routine a device in comics as staples of sitcom plots. Don’t worry so much the traditional spankies and bra look will come back with much fanfare nothing to worry about.
How can anyone fight crime in jeans? Unless they’re “jeggings” and even then, barf.
First of all, WW hasn’t been written well since Greg Rucka’s run. Simone’s run for the most part was…..well….meh. I mean it didn’t suck but, there’s a reason so many people dropped the book. And Don’t get me started on the shit on paper that was Jodi Picoult’s run. Good God man, after Amazon’s attack, I think wiping the slate clean is the best thing the character needed. So, I’m all for this thing that JMS is doing. If it doesn’t work out, well, it can easily be reverted. Quite frankly, this is what the character really needs. Though I’m not too fond of the lack of powers at first. That shit didn’t work in the 60′s, I doubt it will work out today.
I”m still annoyed with DC for replacing the eagle she used to have on her costume with the W she’s been wearing for the last 20 some odd years. Bring back the classic costume guys!!!
I wouldn’t have realized this was horrible if you hadn’t told me. Thanks for setting me straight. That’s what a good news outlet does.
Joe Straczynski has done things I liked, and things I haven’t liked. This looks like it will fall into the latter.
Wonder Woman’s biggest (temporary) change happened back when “The Avengers” was still on television. DC decided that Wonder Woman, a comic that wasn’t selling, needed more a Diana Rigg super-spy flavor. So there was the “i Ching” storyline that did away with Amazon Island, her superpowers, and put her in a cat suit. The name “Wonder Woman” only appeared on the cover during this time, and she was only known as Diana Prince. This change lasted roughly two years before she reverted back to her iconic design.
Jim Lee’s design will last maybe a year at best. Jackets went out with the X-men’s Rogue when Jim Lee worked on that series in the 90′s.
Yeah, I’m a nerd.
The only person who could relate to this version of Wonder Woman is In Living Color-era Jennifer Lopez.
Wonder Woman has up until now been written by great writer Gail Simone, but has been selling in the 20k range every month. 20,000 copies a month for a character that DC considers part of it’s “Trinity” with Batman and Superman. Batman and Superman and their related characters are in multiple comic titles every month, whereas Wonder Woman can barely support her own singular title. Not to mention Batman and Superman have movie franchises, Wonder Woman does not, despite Joss Whedom himself taking a crack at it.
Is it any wonder DC has brought on a great writer like JMS to relaunch her? JMS brough Thor from a B-list middling sales character to an A-list top 10 selling book a couple of years ago, so he has the touch.
I’m female and I like it. The old costume was the biggest hinderance for the movie getting made becaues it’s incredibly sexist. This gives her a bit more freedom, though it is less superhero “costume-like” than it is an outfit.
I think this has less to do with “ruining” the character and more to do with establishing a more film-friendly version of the character. Face it, the original Wonder Woman costume would never hold up in the era of The Dark Knight.
People complained about the “electric blue” Superman of a few years ago, although it resulted in an interesting storyline where Superman had to learn how to control his new electro-magnetic powers, and his new vulnerability as a depowered Clark Kent.
It’s an alternative timeline.
It’s not permanent.
The biggest millstone around any DC or Marvel writer’s neck is this: affecting change without effecting change to the character. JMS has created an alternative timeline which allows him to tell some interesting stories without harming the “real” Wonder Woman. Could some of those ideas filter into the “real” DC Universe? Sure.
I’m reserving judgement until I read the stories.
(I wonder (sorry) if we’ll see alternative versions of the other superheroes?)
Meanwhile, fans still have the various collections, including “mod” Diana.
Looking at Lee’s design above, her bustline has been de-emphasized, unlike the exclusive illustration shown previously. Of course, one could find drawings of the classic WW which do the same thing.
Now, a question… why are fans up in arms over Wonder Woman’s new look, but nobody says a thing when Catwoman or Supergirl changes her union suit?
All they did was morph Wonder Woman with Black Canary. Big whoop.
DC will inevitably reboot their entire universe another 5-6 times this decade anyway, so what does it matter? They can’t simply write fresh stories for their classic characters, they’d rather come up with endless “epic” stunts designed to try their readers’ patience time and time again.
Wake me up when they’ve rebooted themselves back to 1993.
Jenette Kahn really was a Wonder Woman for DC Comics, bringing the line world wide respect for a reason. It was under her leadership that Wonder Woman was brought to levels of sales, class and respect under the guidance of master George Perez.
She truly was a pioneer; one of a kind, that Jenette. Because she had an eye for talent, taste and DC thrived under her guidance because of her expertise.
I questioned Diane Nelson’s judgment when I heard she hired the Three Stooges to fill the one vacant publisher position. After seeing this, it’s become clear that not only does Diane Nelson not even have a care or clue, it’s obvious she doesn’t even look at the products that bear her name. Because no self-respecting, intelligent individual would look at this and say, ‘Hey, great idea guys!’
