EXCLUSIVE: Disney Channel has picked up its Emmy Award-winning sitcom Wizards of Waverly Place for a fourth season. The cable channel also has put in development a sequel to Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie, which ranks as cable TV’s second-highest rated scripted telecast of all time. Production on the fourth season of Wizards is scheduled to begin August with new showrunners Vince Cheung and Ben Montanio (Married…with Children). Peter Murrieta who helped launch the series and ran it for the first three seasons, exited in April. Wizards creator Todd J. Greenwald also is an executive producer alongside Cheung and Montanio.
The script for the movie sequel will be written by Dan Berendsen, who also penned the first film as well as Disney’s Hannah Montana: The Movie and the upcoming Camp Rock 2 The Final Jam. Wizards, which revolves around a family of wizards, stars Selena Gomez, David Henrie, Jake T. Austin, Jennifer Stone, Maria Canals-Barrera and David DeLuise. Disney Channel UK star Gregg Sulkin is set to reprise his recurring guest role.
