It’s shaping up to be the year of the second bananas at the Primetime Emmy Awards, with the supporting comedy series acting categories packed with hot names.
The entire cast of breakout freshman comedy Modern Family was submitted as supporting, with Eric Stonestreet, Ty Burrell, Ed O’Neill and Sofia Vergara, who will be co-hosting the Emmy nomination ceremony, as top contenders. The other hot new comedy series this season, Fox’s Glee, also is expected to produce at least one supporting acting nomination, for standout Jane Lynch. And that’s not all.
Two of the three stars of the biggest feature comedy hit last year, The Hangover, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis, are up for supporting comedy actor for NBC’s The Office and HBO’s Bored To Death, respectively, while co-star Ken Joeng is in the running in the supporting comedy actor category for NBC’s Community. Those three series have a number of other solid supporting actor contenders: John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer, coming off a strong season-long storyline that included a wedding and a baby, and three-time nominee Rainn Wilson on The Office, the terrific Ted Danson on Bored to Death, and Community breakout co-stars Danny Pudi and Donald Glover who could land surprise nominations. NBC’s other Thursday comedies also are full of hot supporting talent. Parks and Recreation‘s list of supporting Emmy contenders is led by red-hot Aziz Ansari, a rising feature star and host of the MTV Movie Awards, with Nick Offerman, Chris Pratt, Rashida Jones and Aubrey Plaza also in the running. Meanwhile, 30 Rock has last year’s supporting acting nominees Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan back in contention.
And then there is returning favorite Neil Patrick Harris, overdue for an Emmy after losing out to Jon Cryer last year. The How I Met Your Mother and Two and a Half Men co-stars will probably square off again this year, possibly joined by two other perennial favorites, three-time winner Jeremy Piven, who was surprisingly snubbed at the nominations last year, and his Entourage castmate Kevin Dillon. Weeds‘ Elizabeth Perkins, a three-time nominee, could also return on the distaff side, possibly joined by Hung‘s Jane Adams who, somewhat surprisingly, was submitted as supporting.
The unusually strong group of supporting comedy contenders this year reminds me of the field a few years ago when the supporting players on several comedy series often outshone the leads: Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally on Will & Grace, Brad Garrett, Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts on Everybody Loves Raymond, John Mahoney and David Hyde Pierce on Frasier and Will Arnett and Jeffrey Tambor on Arrested Development.

Is it me or did Bored to Death improve when When the 3 main leads, Ted Danson, Jason Schwartzmann and the other guy got together, it was hilarious. I’m talking about that night scene they did. Why do the critics hate Bored to Death and how could that change?
One must not forget about the exquisite Vanessa Williams for the prematurely final season of “Ugly Betty”.
Speaking of “Bored to Death” can anyone tell me when the second is going to premiere?
Second only to Jane Lynch, I’d love to see Merritt Wever get recognition for her work on ‘Nurse Jackie’ in whatever category they submitted her for.
I absolutely agree!! Jane Lynch.. genius and Merrit Wever…brilliant! Both of these ladies deserve an emphatic nod!!
oh i’d be so happy if she got a nod. seriously she steals every scene she’s in.
I hope that the newer faces are recognised. The new shows this season have tremendous supporting actors/actresses and I would hate if the Entourage guys were honoured with nominations over Ted Danson, Chris Colfer, Eric Stonestreet or Ty Burrell – all of whom have been revelations this season. Danson, in particular, turned in some of the best character work this season and was in the form of his life on Bored to Death.
Bored to Death getting two nominations for a show that just isn’t funny. How sad.
I disagree. For example, that whole scene with Ted Danson, Zach Galifianakis and Jason Schwartzmann in the car together smoking was extremely hilarious. Bored to Death improved over its 1st season.
The show’s not funny but Ted Danson’s easily the best part. I’d like to see him get nominated, as well as Pudi and Glover from ‘Community.’
As much as I like most of the mainstays, ’30 Rock’, ‘The Office’ and ‘Entourage’ all had terrible seasons this year. It’d make sense to honor some new faces.
Agreed… ‘Bored to Death’ is so aptly named that it almost seems mean. I’ve loved all the actors in it but the writing gives them nothing to work with. Schwartzman doesn’t wanna be there… he seems like a kid whose mom dressed him up and then pushed him into Sunday school. Same for Galafinakas. And Danson… yikes. To his credit, he sure is trying very hard to make the writing work. And I’m sure he’s psyched to be added to the endless and tiresome list of HBO characters with substance problems. Again… the title.
Does “Party Down” count in the nominations? Jane Lynch was brilliant here as well as Ken Marino. Any chance they’re considered?
Nick Offerman on Parks & Rec has been so solid in both seasons. That first season was a little rocky while the show found it’s voice and he was a rock then, he has only gotten better as the show indeed found it’s voice.
Anybody want to discuss the definition of comedy? How can WEEDS be compared to MODERN FAMILY? Or ENTOURAGE to TWO AND A HALF MEN? Dramedy, single camera, multi camera…all very different with different skills required.
Anyone who thinks Two And A Half Men is funny should shoot themselves in the face right now
All this talk of second fiddles and nobody mentions Jim Parsons?
Jim Parsons will go lead.
It was a damn travesty that Jim Parsons didn’t win the Emmy last year, but instead it was Alec Baldwin playing himself once again.
Love “BTD”! Droll, quirky, fantastic dialogue highlighting male bonding w/out the “Entourage” phony Hollywood swagger. Everyone on that show, particularly Ted Danson & Zach Galifianakis (I know several comic book artist exactly like his character– except they’re skinny from starving for their “artistic integrity”) deserves an Emmy nomination/win.
Bored to Death got better towards the end of it’s 1st season. But, the comedy department is lacking. It isn’t just HBO. The United States of Taras 1st season wasn’t funny either. Neither was the 1st season of Parks & Recreation nor the most recent episodes of Weeds or Entourage.
Merritt Wever deserves an Emmy for her work on Nurse Jackie. And
I’ll admit, Ted Danson is pretty great on Bored to Death…
The car scene with the 3 of them getting high on “Bored to Death,” is SIMPLY CLASSIC.
What about Chris Pratt on Parks & Recreations? That show became one of the funniest on TV this season and he was one of the funniest things in it. Along the Modern Family cast and Nick Offerman, he’s the comedy tv actor I heard people talking about the most this season.
If Jon Cryer wins for Two and a Half Men over anyone in Modern Family, Parks & Recs or The Office, then I’m skipping Charlie Sheen’s Christmas party next year. And that’s final.
I simply cannot understand the success of Two and a Half Men….
I am the only person who thinks Jayma Mays deserves the supporting actress nod along with Jane Lynch for Glee. She is absolutely brilliant as Emma Pillsburry. Also, I would be ecstatic to see Chris Colfer to earn a nomination the flamboyant and scene-stealing Kurt Hummel.
