OMFG, the CW is doing its first ever Emmy campaign. Well, actually, it is not a full-blown Emmy campaign but a splashy insert in the upcoming Emmy magazine that will raise eyebrows.
Because it borrows from CW’s racy 2008 “OMFG” marketing campaign for Gossip Girl for its campaign slogan: “OMFG FYC.” The brochure, a brainchild of Warner Bros. TV Group’s chief marketing officer Lisa Gregorian, also includes a DVD with promo trailers for Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, Smallville and Supernatural cut specifically for the Emmy stint.
CW, as well as predecessor the WB, have never been Emmy darlings, with all of their shows, including critically praised Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gilmore Girls and Everwood, consistently shut out. “Historically, shows that are targeted to that (younger) demographic are often times overlooked,” Gregorian said. “What we are trying to say to Emmy voters is: don’t not consider these unique and innovative shows because the audience they are produced for is younger. We think it’s great quality TV, and good TV deserves to be recognized.”
In their maiden Emmy promotion for the CW, the marketing team was looking to be provocative. Playing off the network’s image of a place where all characters are young an pretty, they considered another Emmy campaign slogan: “Beautiful people deserve Emmys too,” before settling on OMFG.
Well, CW will certainly get the attention of Emmy voters who open Emmy magazine. And if they don’t quite appreciate the ad and the promos, their teen kids or grandkids probably will.

Im just going to say it:
Gossip Girl is probably my favorite show on TV right now. (havent seen Treme though) Very well paced, very well written.
Hahahahahaha! Rolling on the… oh wait, ROFLMFAO. Sex & The City 2 is my favorite movie. But then again, I haven’t seen Citizen Kane yet.
Thanks a lot, Dil- now I have to clean the coffee that I spewed through my nose off my keyboard. Well done!
OMFG, all that says to me is your marketing dept is a tad bit out of date and out of touch, and when I say tad I mean about five years.
Nothing says pathetic like grown adults giggling over how cool something is, when that something isn’t cool anymore, and hasn’t been for a while.
They could have place the ingredients of noodle soup in that exact font and it would still look just as cool, why show how out of touch you are.
What’s generally considered the successful beginning of any marketing campaign is early buzz, and from the comment count here, I say this campaign’s off to a greart start. Congrats to the marketing team for knowing who they’re targeting.
Michael, I’m guessing you’re not their target on this one since you’re way too COOL to be an Academy voter. BTW isn’t the word COOL kinda dated…from the 1930s? Don’t get me wrong, I still think the word works, that’s my point.
Regardless of what anyone thinks of the programming at The CW…OMFG at least they’re stirring things up with the campaign.
Kudos to CW for doing this and for including the shows they did. Being a fan of Supernatural, I firmly believe it features some of the best acting on television from Jensen Ackles and Jared Padelecki. Not many shows can be carried on the strength of only two actors but they do it week in and week out and must be two of the hardest working actors out there.
It really sucks though that genre shows like Supernatural and Buffy are omitted from these nominations just because of that. To me it takes more talent sometimes to do a convincing job of acting when interacting with a creature that isn’t actually in the scene until it’s added in post-production. I’d imagine pretending a tennis ball is some crazy monster is tough and, in addition to that, these characters have some amazing emotional depth. Good luck to CW!
This. Science-fiction/Fantasy shows have to work twice as hard to be thought half as good as anything else, and even when they manage to blow it all out of the water like Supernatural does and consistently has… well.
They get ignored for being sci-fi/fantasy which is so unfair. *sigh*
Gossip Girl is going for Best Comedy right?
The promo with “Damn you Chuck Bass,” made me laugh.
If anyone on the CW deserves an Emmy, it’s Jensen Ackles on Supernatural. He is absolutely stunning on that show & sadly will never be recognized for it since it is both on that network and a genre show. It’s sad that the Emmy votes can’t take those shows seriously, because some of the actors are truly deserving of the honor.
I so agree with you. And to people who compare Ackles to previous award winners like James Spader and Hugh Laurie I say this: Ackles could walk right into their roles and play them without breaking a sweat and without the grandstanding (read: overacting) that all-too-often often gets passed off as talent and skill these days. But there is no way they could play his role.
Wow I can’t believe the CW is actually doing this. I adore Smallville and I think they deserve
some recognition for such a Epic Season, I really hope they get some nominations out of this especially for Tom’s fantastic potrayal of Superman no one deserves the accolades more IMO then him
Well said. Tom Welling is excellent, and deserves much more recognition for his work, both on and off screen.
I’m Sorry but the CW has no place in the Emmy discussion. You think the shows on CW deserve to be the same class as I don’t know: House, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Lost, Any show from FX. And like wise you think any actor on any CW show deserves to be nominated with any of the lead actors or even Supporting actors from this shows. This is the Emmy’s their “Supposed” to honor the best in Television not your guilty pleasure of Television. And Please I would love to hear someone try and argue the opposite.
Have you ever watched anything on the CW? Because Jensen Ackles is one of the best actors on TV, Supernatural is not a guilty pleasure show, it’s a quality show that makes you actually think.. Jensen’s portrayal of Dean Winchester is brilliant yet heart wrenching, he is one of the very few actors that can say something without speaking..
So unless you watched Supernatural or any other show on the CW I would keep your mouth shut…
I completely agree. I think Jensen Ackles has consistently been overlooked for great shows. Hell, the entire Supernatural show has been.
And now Vampire Diaries will never get a glance because people make automatic assumptions while never taking the time to watch the show. It doesn’t matter that Ian Somerhalder (Lost) is absolutely brilliant in it. I doubt he will ever the nod that he deserves, just like Jensen Ackles.
I believe it was the NY Times television critic, when listing his top ten shows of 2009, who said some critics favor shows because those shows flatter the critic’s intellect. He chose his top ten shows based on entertainment value and that is why Supernatural was in his top ten. Pardon those of us and our “guilty pleasures”. I don’t feel “guilty” about being a fan of Supernatural. I have a BA degree in history and, frankly, I’m not insecure enough to need my intellect flattered by a television show. I’m just looking for a quality show that has good writing, good acting, interesting and thought provoking story lines, and is just plain fun and entertaining. That’s why Supernatural and shows like it deserve to be recognized.
The second you throw LOST into the arguement you lose of lot of credibility. I’ll give you the others are quality programs but LOST should never be given credit for making an incomprehensible mess of random characters and “plot” lines. Granted individual scenes were well written but the lack of any kind of forethought to an over-arching plot made LOST perhaps the most overrated show ever. Back to the article though Supernatural should get consideration for acting. Even if it never gets a nod it’s a well written and well acted show. The other three shows CW put forth are pretty bad and deserve nothing.
As if Lost were that good… seriously, just because it has a decent story line everybody thinks is the best thing ever…
I do like the show but its sooverrated, every person in this land that wants to sound remotedly smart talk about Lost as if it were important
Agreed firmly with ‘Enough,’ Supernatural might just be the best show on television, it’s the farthest thing away from a guilty pleasure. The storylines are extremely intriguing (and epic for that matter), the characters are irreplaceable, and the quality and acting of the show itself is made for an Emmy. Watch it if you don’t agree, it’s absolutely NOTHING like the shows it shares the network with.
If nothing else, it’s the most underrated show on television.
I agree that Mad Men and Breaking Bad are great shows but House? Are you kidding? Lost? Nope, not gonna talk about THAT show and its way to end things.
Shut your mouth if you have never watched Supernatural. Jensen Ackles is long overdue for an Emmy. Just his performance in this season’s ‘THE END’ where he plays two versions of himself SHOULD get him nominated but of course, the Emmys are a boring group of idiots that prefer to go ignore genre shows in general. And come on it’s not all about quality or why does Grey’s Anatomy get nominated? it’s a weekly soap.
I think you may have lost sight of the fact that good tv is also supposed to be first and foremost entertaining. I am a fan of TVD and I don’t really consider it a guilty pleasure. Everyone associated with that show is at the top of their game and that comes through in the show they produce each and every week, consistently. From the cast, actors, writers, directors et al it is obvious that they all share a dedication to give the viewing audience their best and I consider this show every bit on a par, in every way, with any of the other shows you mention.
I still can’t believe Buffy or Everwood never got a nomination for best drama. Terrible.
But yeah, if anyone deserves it on the CW, it’s Jensen.
It’s a shame. Certain Buffy episodes, I’m thinking the musical episode and the silent episode, should DEFINITELY have won an Emmy. Don’t even start with Everwood or I’m gonna tear up. The characters in that show were so outstanding.
Awww, I love that the CW is doing this. I do think that, every ONCE in awhile, the CW produces something that is worthy of consideration at the very least.
Honestly, Vampires Diaries is on par with a lot of good genre television on other networks. And even Gossip Girl sometimes produces better episodes that Grey’s Anatomy, which is essentially the grown-up version of the show.
It’s obvious that many of the posts here are from people in the marketing/pr departments at the CW.
Dave’s right, the CW shows are not Emmy worthy, although they may be guilty pleasure worthy. There should be an award for those guilty pleasure shows though. Although the quality may not be good, there is still something to be said for popular shows that pull in viewers at a time when the networks are desperate for audiences.
Supernatural is a guilty pleasure show? Please don’t insult the show… I don’t work for the CW no desire to work for that crappy network. I just recognize talent when I see it and Jensen Ackles is the best actor on TV right now.
So don’t call Supernatural a guilty pleasure show, that is an insult to the cast, and crew who work hard to bring us quality work each week…
Nope, just Supernatural fans idjit!
*idjit*
LOL that will show him/her/it
Considering the fact that a good deal of the positive comments in this post are about Supernatural, it’s pretty clear from your response that you have no idea about the show. The network usually can’t find it in them to promote the series, period, let alone send out a cadre of pr grunts to talk it up on a message board.
Supernatural is a genuinely good program. Ackles is a talented actor, and Padalecki has turned in some excellent performances himself. Maybe you should give it a shot before writing it off as fluff.
Sorry to disappoint you, but I don’t work for the CW/marketing department/TV in general. I’m just another Supernatural fan who thinks that Supernatural is an amazingly underrated show. Both leads and supporting characters have done fantastic jobs, but Jensen Ackles in particular has pulled off some great work. Too bad the Emmys will never recognize him.
Jensen Ackles was recognized for a daytime Emmy THREE times when he was on “Days of our Lives” He also won the soap opera digest award. But now he is in primetime, and on a great show(Supernatural) where he is not recognized just because of the genre of the show, and the network it is on. It’s not fair because he is a very talented actor who just gets better and better. They recognized him then- he was on NBC.
I definitely do not work for CW because they’ve done a good job ignoring their best shows over and over and one of those being Supernatural. They’ve hardly done any decent promo for the show and they get sidelined for all the superficial crap that CW generates. It isn’t even considered to be a popular show up until this season and the fact that they’ve survived five years up against CSI and Grey Anatomy. Supernatural has probably one of them most creative team of writers and the actors have scenes that makes you want to applaud the TV because it’s that GOOD. It’s just shame that the show is on such a network that they won’t be taken seriously and people won’t know how good it is.
I think a better campaign would have been to use these four letters instead…
L A M E
While I would love for Jensen to actually get noticed and nominated for his portrayal of Dean Winchester. The Emmys have sadly become another useless award show. They nominate the same people in the same category year after year and the same shows as well.
Nothing different and new ever get considered because well it’s out of their comfort zone to nominate genre shows.
But I give the CW props for trying, though it will be ignored by the Emmy voters…
The Emmys occassionally throw love at genre shows, The X-Files was nominated for a total of 21 primetime Emmys during it’s run, was even nominated for Best Series and Best Writing 4 years in a row.
The difference between The X-Files and CW is one was fresh, entertaining, and had a significant audience…the other, well…
TheWB might have deserved EMMY nominations for Buffy and co, but theCW should not even try. They should be ashamed of the shit they air.
I think its awesome that The CW is doing this. GG, VD, SP, and SV are The CWs best, and most popular shows, and they deserve to get some kind of recognition. All four of these shows have some talented actors, and its sad that shows like these are always overlooked.
Supernatural is an awesome show- deserves some Emmy nods to J&J and even Misha for his Castiel… But Buffy never got much more than nod in their direction so I doubt this will help. But I love love love Supernatural and would be ecstatic if it was actually nominated. They deserve it, hard core.
I wish they would nominate Supernatural’s ‘Changing Channels’. It’s a brilliant episode of television and no haters it’s not about bikini babes, it’s one of the best meta episodes to play with different types of tv shows.
They should nominate Supernatural’s ‘Changing Channels’, it’s a brilliant episode of television.
The ONLY thing on the CW worthy of EMMY consideration is Ackles’ performance as Dean Winchester.
Finally a move to praise the cw shows. Beautiful people deserve an Emmy.
They sure do and in my book this comment goes straight for Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. I’d join the campaign to give them an Emmy anytime.
Gossip Girl is seriously one of the most ridiculous shows on tv. Well written? It’s like every week the writers get together & purposely disregard anything that has ever happened previously. Such a mess.
Gossip Girl is not one of those great written shows, it is more of a guilty pleasure. I don’t see the show ever getting nominated, but the show has two great actors which are Leighton Meester and Ed Westwick. These two make the show and they are brilliant young actors. If anyone on The CW deserves an Emmy its definitely Meester, Westwick and Ackles.
The one I would vote for an Emmy would be Jensen Ackles and I agree, he’s the best actor on the CW and most of TV. Give the guy the kudos he deserves Emmy people. The man has talent!
I hope this works. Jared Padalecki deserves an Emmy after his preformance in the season 5 finale of Supernatural.
Jensen Ackles of Supernatural most definitely deserves an Emmy for his role as Dean Winchester. He is a wonderful actor. Supernatural is a great show that deserves credit.
I don’t know about Smallville though. It’s been awhile since I watched that show. As for Gossip Girl I have seen the show and watching it was definitely a guilty pleasure.
While I’m disappointed in the juvenile direction the CW decided to go in with their Emmy campaign, I’m cautiously optimistic about Supernatural’s chances. I watch a lot of TV, I’m a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, House, Lost, Mad Men, Entourage, True Blood and lots of other Emmy favorites. Some of them actually are great TV (Mad Men), some used to be (House), and some were, in my opinion, always more popular than great (Grey’s). But Jensen Ackles has consistently given some of the best performances on TV for his portrayal of Dean Winchester. I love the show itself and I think it’s highly underrated, but it’s Jensen’s performance that can get me through a lackluster episode where the writing or directing isn’t that great. . .he elevates anything and everything he’s given. He deserved an Emmy for What Is and What Should Never Be way back in season 2, but I’m a realist, so I’m not expecting a win. But I would love a nomination, or even some recognition for him. He really deserves it.
The CW once again missing the boat. I am glad they are actually doing an Emmy campaign but could they have chosen a more childish approach? I agree that most of their shows don’t deserve it but there is some quality work going on, at least as good as many of the usual nominees have done. But genre shows rarely get the respect they deserve. I’m sure the only reason Lost got any is because they tried to hide it’s being a genre show at first.
Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester on Supernatural has continued to deliver though and if anyone on that network deseves a nomination it’s him. For 5 years he has delivered some of best performances on TV and this season is no exception. It would be nice to see him get some recognition for that with at least a nomination.
