OMFG, the CW is doing its first ever Emmy campaign. Well, actually, it is not a full-blown Emmy campaign but a splashy insert in the upcoming Emmy magazine that will raise eyebrows.
Because it borrows from CW’s racy 2008 “OMFG” marketing campaign for Gossip Girl for its campaign slogan: “OMFG FYC.” The brochure, a brainchild of Warner Bros. TV Group’s chief marketing officer Lisa Gregorian, also includes a DVD with promo trailers for Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, Smallville and Supernatural cut specifically for the Emmy stint.
CW, as well as predecessor the WB, have never been Emmy darlings, with all of their shows, including critically praised Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gilmore Girls and Everwood, consistently shut out. “Historically, shows that are targeted to that (younger) demographic are often times overlooked,” Gregorian said. “What we are trying to say to Emmy voters is: don’t not consider these unique and innovative shows because the audience they are produced for is younger. We think it’s great quality TV, and good TV deserves to be recognized.”
In their maiden Emmy promotion for the CW, the marketing team was looking to be provocative. Playing off the network’s image of a place where all characters are young an pretty, they considered another Emmy campaign slogan: “Beautiful people deserve Emmys too,” before settling on OMFG.
Well, CW will certainly get the attention of Emmy voters who open Emmy magazine. And if they don’t quite appreciate the ad and the promos, their teen kids or grandkids probably will.

are you people serious? the CW has no chance at all!!!
I’m a Supernatural fan, i like the show, and yes Jensen’s acting is quite good, but we’re talking about the Emmys, it has to be extraordinary. Supernatural is an awesome show, but it can’t be compared with Mad Men, Breaking Bad or Dexter…
and not all genre shows are excluded, i seem to recall Anna Paquin being nominated, and True Blood has vamps and all that genre stuff.
True Blood is on HBO. Almost everything HBO and/or Showtime puts out is lauded with Emmy’s, deserving or not.
I love True Blood, it’s one of my favorite shows (back on in 9 days woo!), but Anna Paquin did not deserve that. Sookie is one of my least favorite characters on the show, I think a lot of other actors do far more than take their clothes off and cry every episode. But it’s HBO, so throw some statues at it.
OMFG is a tad bit dated but eh, at least The CW is trying for once.
Season 5 of Supernatural was the worst season of the series overall but it did have some brilliant episodes like 5X04 “The End.”
Jensen Ackles consistently rises about the show’s uneven writing. He definitely deserves an Emmy nod. Too bad he’ll never get it for the role of Dean Winchester because the show is too mediocre in many other respects. And it’s on The CW.
Oh well. He’ll get the recognition he deserves some day.
I think I like the beautiful people slogan better but I guess that would have pissed off all the beautiful people on other networks or something.
Speaking of beautiful and talented actors, definitely agree that Jensen Ackles is the best on The CW right now. Sadly no one on Gossip Girl or Smallville can actually act and I’ve only watched a couple of episode of Vampire Diaries so I can’t really judge that one. Ian Sommerhalder or whatever his name is, seems pretty decent but the other guy was kinda sucks.
totally agree.
i think ackles is one of the few on tv these days who have beautiful faces and wonderful acting skills.
Well, lets face it, Vampire’s diarie and gossip girl are teen shows, sure as hell they’re not Emmy Material, Smallville, I love Tom and all but there’s no chance in life, I mena the glory days are gone.
Supernatural, ok, if they could get a nom its gonna be on the music, I love the show and followed it for the whole 5 yards *or seasons* and I swear they should give Jensen a Nomination and an award for his straight face while delivering some lines that… Jesus!! I would never forgive any other actor in this world. seriously, he’s the most consistent actor there, and Mark Pellegrino, he was AMAZING like in any other show he works at.
In any case, CW has no re
I don’t watch Emmy but I do watch Supernatural. Nuff said.
It would be awesome if Supernatural was nominated or any of the actors was nominated but even the late Kim Manners got a lot of negative comments on the awards. Wished Supernatural all the best. The chemistry between the two J’s should be noted.
But even if the show was not nominated, it would still have stronger fanbase than any of the show won on Emmy. X-Files still ‘lives’ tho it never won an Emmy.
I think Jensen Ackles HAS given some extraordinary performances, right up with the top TV players. The fact that his show is low-rated on a 3rd rate network doesn’t change that. I’d put his best performances against anyone in those shows best performances.
OMFG? Oh No They Di-ent!!!
I only watch Supernatural on The CW and yeah Ackles is definitely the best reason to watch. I think the future episode, 504-The End, was Emmy-worthy effort all around so they should at least send that one to the Emmy nominating committee.
With all due respect, Dave, you’re not helping yourself with the knee-jerk “respectable shows that not very many people actually watch” line. Just because *you* like those shows does not mean that someone who thinks they’re dreck (and I think most Emmy and Oscar bait is total dreck in a dreary genre of its own), or likes something else more, is a fool, just that you haven’t yet noticed that the Emmy crowd consistently go for a very narrow brand of show that eschews true experimentation in favor of lots of industry navel-gazing. Hence why SF, fantasy and horror shows never get much joy at the Emmy Awards.
If you like the shows you mentioned, that’s cool. But please stop being such a snob. Just because they won Emmy awards doesn’t put them above all reproach, or make less-fortunate shows awful.
I would agree with those who say that Supernatural’s “Changing Channels” is a highly-experimental episode worthy of a nomination, as are Jensen Ackles performances in either The End or Point of No Return (as well as probably Misha Collins in the latter episode or Jim Beaver in Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid). Will they ever get one? I have no idea. But I know they definitely wouldn’t get one if the CW hadn’t bothered to submit the show for consideration.
As for the ad campaign…meh. But I would like to get a closer look at the Supernatural section of that brochure.
I’m happy that the CW is at least attempting to get the shows nominated. I don’t support at all their method of doing so, but I would love to see Supernatural get its due respect. I’m not a fan of Gossip Girl or Vampire Diaries and I started watching Smallville when it was new but lost interest. To me, Supernatural is the only one that really has a chance to stand toe to toe with some of the other great shows out there. It would probably tick me off if I saw Lost get nominated again while Supernatural doesn’t but that’s probably all about opinion and my opinion happens to be that Lost is crap on a stick. Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and the Supernatural cast and crew deserve the recognition for their performances. Alas, I am realistic that the Emmy’s and I don’t see eye to eye about the shows we find are quality so I’m not expecting too much from them. Don’t worry Supernatural, at least you’ve got some of the most loyal and diehard fans out there and if nothing else you’ll be remembered long after people forget what other junk out there got awards.
If true talent was the isssue with Emmy rewards, Jensen would be considered – and would have won! He truly is the best tv actor out there nowadays!
I’m with you, he could have a nomination, but you’ll see the noms are going to those who show lots of skin and at least had sex scenes a dozen times this season.
Guilty pleasures are shows like Grey’s and Lost, which depend on actor appeal and wild plots. High ratings do not equal quality. Not all viewers want quality, some want to veg out and not be engaged, which is okay, but call a duck a duck.
I’m not crazy about the advertising campaign for the CW’s appeal for Emmy consideration, but I applaud them trying to gain some notice for the best show on TV. Yes, Supernatural may be a genre show, but it has true talent and depth, in the writing, directing and acting. It certainly deserves to be nominated in all these categories, it has earned that respect.
Jensen Ackles was always a good actor, but he has honed his acting skills on Supernatural and become an amazing actor. He is brilliant at comedy, action and being able to intensely reveal all the intricacies of the most complex and intriguing character I have even seen on a TV show. Dean Winchester is a character most actors would love to play, but no one could possibly touch Jensen’s introspective and emotional acting, or how he can show such strength and vulnerability at the same time. He truly can convey everything Dean is thinking or feeling without saying a word. He is the most underrated and nuanced actor working on TV. One day the rest of the world will recognize that fact, but it would be wonderful to see his talent noted for his portrayal of Dean Winchester.
Supernatural is the little show that could. They’ve stayed on the air for five years now, consistently airing quality shows that delight and amaze their loyal fans, and still most of the world doesn’t know it even exists. It truly is their loss.
B.J.
Supernatural definately deserves an emmy nod or just recognition for pushing the envelope and not having be all about sex. We have these two sexy guys and its not about getting them into bed or who their attracted too. And the chemistry should definately be noted. There is not one show in t.v. that has this kind of chemistry between two characters. And both boys have given me WOW moments. Two of the best actors on t.v. today and being on a small network and a scifi show shouldn’t hinder them like it does.
Award for Supernatural!
That’s the best show ever! And the actors are phenomenal in it!
Emmy for it! Emmy for it!
Seriously America! Supernatural is SUCH a good show and it’s criminal that genre shows in the US seem to be overlooked so much (Buffy, anyone?) Jensen Ackles has acted his little socks off for 5 years. Time for some recognition!
I agree with those who said that Supernatural deserves recognition. The show is seriously underrated, it showcases great acting and a great mixture of genres. It’s such a shame that hasn’t been promoted enough by the CW. I can’t take EMMY’s serious as long as they chose to overlook quality shows like “Friday Night Lights” and “Supernatural” because of their genre or the network that airs them and chose to give awards to shows like “Grey’s Anatomy”( seriously that show is like a soap) and the mess Lost has become in the last seasons(I will admit I loved the first season, but after that it became way to confusing so I stopped watching) or even True Blood(I don’t watch the show, but in all the promos and videos I’ve seen all they do is get naked or have sex).
I don’t like the way they chose to promote the shows for an EMMY, but it’s CW so what could we expect. At least they try. Better latter than never.
Yeah!!! Jensen Ackles deserve an Emmy for sure!! but every year some same nomination!!! It doesn’t matter If they don’t give him the Award but at least nominate Ackles for letting him (and his fans) know that his great job on the Supernatural had been watched!!!:(
It may be splashy, but I’m not sure anything the CW has produced this season deserves Emmy consideration. If this were last season, I’d say “Supernatural” was the only series the network aired that should be in contention given the level of writing and arc-plotting they put into the story-telling then. But the producers kind of squandered most of that potential this year, and the writing overall simply wasn’t as strong. And while I still think the show is the network’s best bet, this is not the season for that consideration except for two episodes that were “Emmy” worthy on their own right – “The End” and “Changing Channels”, and of the two, “The End” is the only one that really hits every mark, and elevates the series and shows what they are capable of.
And on that note, I agree with posters who have pointed out that Jensen Ackles, who knocked it out of the ballpark in “The End” and who has turned his character into an iconic one over five seasons is the one CW actor who is an Emmy contender. The fact is, the man has outgrown the show and the network. If Ackles were attached to a better project with more exposure, he’d have been a consideration before this.
Jensen Ackles has deserved an emmy nomination for years. The show, not so much, but the actor definitely. No one elevates material like that man and no actor makes me genuinely FEEL! the emotion that he wants me to feel like that man. Nominate him already.
ALSO JARED PAWLECKI DOUCHEBAGS,
The only reason to watch the CW which mist of the time does stand for Crappy Writing is Supernatural. THe Winchesters have some of the best episodes on television and since I own all the seasons and have Tivod the rest. I think its the best show on television or at least basic cable.
I will admit I havent seen Lost it looked stupid to me and I stopped watching House when I realized every episode is the same. House is a jerk, some kid gets a rare disease that will kill him five commercials full of the wrong diagnoses then at the end House figures it out and then scene.
Hugh Laurie is good but he could never have pulled off any of Supernatural’s Season five episodes. Not a one
The Emmy’s stopped being about talent a long time ago and has been strictly a popularity contest for years.
If it still recognized real talent, Jensen Ackles would have multiple awards by now in stead of being over-looked every year.
As for the CW’s campaign I find “OMFG” to be childish and offensive- not something I would ever take seriously.
CW wants and Emmy nomiation? Well then you better start producing Emmy worthy shows.
And these comments, wow! Not one actor on CW is anywhere close to Emmy class. CW is trash so is their campaign.
I think it’s a travesty that Jensen Ackles is overlooked by the Emmy committee, simply because he is on a genre’ show on a fledgling network. His performance in the episode “The End” was nothing short of brilliant and was the best performance on TV this year (bar none)! He had other stellar performances as well as he routinely rose above bad writing throughout the season!
SUPERNATURAL IS the best show on television, and I pity anyone who hasn’t watched it and realized that fact.
Even though it appears, at first glance, to be superficial, after watching the episodes many times over five years, I have come to realize the depth of the writing, acting, directing and amazing production values. Given that this show has a shoestring budget, it turns out a miracle every week, and I have watched in awe as the show’s mytharc has bloomed like a magnificent rose, exposing petals in layers of gorgeous colors.
Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki formed a kinship that translated into gold for the Winchester brothers they have portrayed and will continue to portray into the sixth season. Their chemistry is nothing short of magnificent, and their acting stellar and well-deserving of an Emmy.
The irony is that SUPERNATURAL would never have made it to six years on one of the major networks. The ratings garnered by SUPERNATURAL are mediocre, except by CW standards. However, being on the CW and a genre show is a stigma from which SUPERNATURAL can’t escape.
Love,
Robin, Editor, SUPERNATURAL, http://www.moogi.com
Thank you all for arguing. this was my attempt when I first posted. To see how riled up everyone would get. now after reading your posts. I will concede that from what Ive read and people Ive talked to Supernatural would be the only show that could be seen as “worthy” of nominations. I have never seen an episode but from what Ive been told it is a great show on a bad network. I still believe that the rest of the CW has no place in a Emmy conversation. Regarding House I completely understand that the show is repetitive but if anyone doesn’t believe Hugh Laurie is amazing go watch the season premier of the current season. To people who disregard Lost, you’ve never seen the show or clearly didn’t understand it (don’t worry there’s plenty of you out there) in terms of Acting, Almost everyone on Lost besides Evangeline Lilly (she’s very very attractive but when given her own episode can barley carry it) is amazing, what Micheal Emerson and Terry O’Quinn have accomplished over the series as well as this past season is nothing short of remarkable. Matthew Fox this season was better than expected, Naveen Andrews took Sayid to another level and the single episode that Nestor Carbonell (don’t think I spelled that right) was given was nothing short of brilliant. Mad Men and Braking Bad I don’t even have to defend, Bryan Cranston is the best actor on TV Period end of story, if you don’t believe me go watch Breaking Bad and try to find something wrong with anyone of his performances. As well I forgot to mention my first post, Dexter, Michal C. Hall would have multiple Emmy’s by now if it wasn’t for Cranston. So all in all I guess my point is the CW should just try and campaign for Supernatural and drop everything else. Let’s hear the rebuttal people, let the Venom fly.
I’ll agree with that, Dave. Supernatural is the best thing on the CW and the only show on that network worthy and deserving of Emmy consideration. So why doesn’t the network realize the gem they have and actually promote the show? Campaigning for all their shows dilutes any chance Supernatural has. Not to mention a few well-placed ads for their best show might inform more viewers of what they are missing!
Oh, and take some advice from Matt Roush from TV Guide, who also never followed Supernatural, he caught up with the DVDs last summer and said it was the best decision he ever made. Get watching, you want to be ready for S6 and then we’ll talk.
B.J.
I agree with you to a certain extent. Let me begin with what we see eye to eye on: Breaking Bad. Genius show. Bryan Cranston is nothing short of amazing… week to week the quality of his performance blows my mind. Aaron Paul has grown a lot as well. I was really pleased when he was nominated last year and I hope he receives another nod this time around. I also agree with you on the subject of Hugh Laurie. The actor himself is still terrific, however the quality of the show has diminished. As for Lost, I have my reasons, but I never liked the show. To me, it all felt really disjointed. I do acknowledge however, that Terry O’Quinn and Michael Emerson are remarkable actors who turn in consistently amazing performances. Also, Dexter is fabulous and Michael C. Hall deserves a lot of the credit. Making a serial killer downright lovable is no easy feat. I watch a lot of TV so I think I have a pretty broad basis for comparison when I say that Jensen Ackles is very talented and extremely underrated. I will try to keep this brief, as many people have already pointed out the specifics of his talent, but in my opinion he should at least get a nomination. While Supernatural in itself may be a guilty pleasure show, Ackles’ performance still shines. He has an ability to elevate sloppy writing and he has chemistry with almost any guest star they bring in. Week to week he brings such a nuanced and complete portrayal of Dean Winchester, an extremely complex and damaged individual. Like many people have said, Ackles can convey what Dean is thinking and feeling using no words at all. Anyway, I’m rambling now, but to conclude, this whole campaign seems a little bit silly. The day Gossip Girl get an Emmy nomination for acting is the day I stop watching television. The CW should drop the other shows and focus on campaigning for Supernatural, specifically Ackles if they want to be taken seriously at all. They should also find slogans that might convince Emmy voters that they are worthy for consideration, and not use ones that make them sound like bratty tweens. Point is, Ackles is the only Emmy-worthy part of the CW, and to those who doubt, watch any of the episodes that have already been mentioned and you will see for yourself.
Lost is overrated. Emerson and O’Quinn are brilliant but the rest of this show, especially its character writing, is hot air that dissolves the meaning of good storytelling. Yes, Hugh Laurie is a great actor, you should watch some of his U.K shows, BUT ‘House’ as a show jumped the shark a long time ago.
I don’t wanna be rude but you constantly offend people that disagree with you. People have preferences based on their own experiences and expectations so there is always a certain amount of subjectivity in a choice. I’m sure Bryan Cranston is a brilliant actor but I THINK Michael C. Hall is better. It’s my opinion and I can accept that you disagree with me so why don’t you stop acting like you know the absolute truth, reminds me too much of the church if I’m honest.
But back to the main topic – the CW’s emmy campaign. Is it a stupid idea? Maybe. Will it help them to get nominations? I doubt it. Are all shows on the CW guitly pleasures? No, and if they can consider Grey’s anatomy worthy of an Emmy, they can definitely nominate CW shows.
You sound pretty full of yourself, Dave. You’ve never watched Supernatural, yet you demand others watch shows you like? Pffft.
I think it’s clear from reading the comments on here that Jensen Ackles’ talent is appreciated by the viewers who see him perform. He outshines everyone else. He has put life and breath into a fictional character so completely that I sometimes have to remind myself that Dean Winchester isn’t real. And then I don’t actually believe it.
