TBS gave Conan O’Brien a new show. Now the cable network is trying to help him get an Emmy for his old one.
Starting today, TBS is launching a “for your consideration” campaign in support of O’Brien with two ads. Neither of them mentions the name of O’Brien’s previous employer, NBC, or the show he is eligible for,
The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien. But the ads are a clever way to get attention (O’Brien is getting no Emmy support from NBC for obvious reasons) and double as promos for O’Brien’s new show on TBS, which launches on November 8.
“Conan’s great work in 2009 and 2010 deserves Emmy consideration,” Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks, said in a statement. “We’re very excited to have him join TBS later this year.”

No amount of campaigning will make up for the fact that his show was uninspired and unfunny
good luck beating the daily show
You’re uninspired and unfunny.
Agreed.
Nobody cares if you think Conan is funny or not, people. Nobody. Stop using every mention of Conan, Leno, or Letterman to repeat, yet again, which of them you hate, and why. It’s not interesting or relevant, and stating it as if it were some kind of objective fact doesn’t change either of these things. It’s predictable and pointless.
Ah, Chris. Man after my own heart.
Who picked out that pic of Conan? I’m Team Coco and all – but that picture does not do him any favors.
Don’t they have one pic of him smiling?
I thought that too, what an odd photo… but then I recognized that’s the actual picture the “I’m with CoCo” campaign was designed from.
I know, I know. Daily Show will win.
But just for a second – picture it:
The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien beats Leno’s Tonight Show at the Emmy awards ON NBC!
Just imagine the acceptance speech. It would be one of the great moments in TV history. (I know that’s not why someone should win, but people have won for worse reasons.)
Leno hasn’t been nominated for years. These will be the nominees. Still to be nominated and canceled will be good enough.
Daily Show
Colbert Report
Late Show
SNL
Real Time
Not saying they’re the best but they’ve been Emmy regulars for awhile now.
His 11:30 show was god awful which most longtime fans will readily admit. And has others have said, The Daily Show will beat him easily when his TBS show starts up. He should have sucked it up and taken the slot after Colbert/Daily Show on Comedy Central.
Which longtime fans are you talking about? We don’t “readily admit” anything of the sort.
who are you to speak for his fans? if his fans didnt like the show he wouldnt have beaten letterman in the ratings for the first 16 weeks until Leno came back and Lettermans affairs were exposed. I loved his late night show and his tonight show! He deserves this! I like Jon Stewart but his show is all political… BORING! Colbert is better but still really political… They are hilarious when they do stuff outside of their shows so I’m not saying they can’t be funny but their shows are not the greatest…. I don’t get how The Daily Show wins every year…
You don’t get how TDS wins every year? Hmmm… I guess you’ll also be the first person in line for the midnight screening of Cats and Dogs 2…
Now hold on there. Conan did not beat Letterman in the ratings for the first 16 weeks, his ratings started dropping big time after the first week, long before Leno came back. And if more of his fans had liked his show, it would still be on.
The Only reason Conan’s ratings were low before Leno further complicated things is plain and simple.
Conan’s TS debuted during the SUMMER. One of the LEAST watched times of year. And NBC’s summer slate was especially weak, not even Reality shows helped (“I’m a Celebrity get me out of here” wasn’t exactly a ratings goldmine…Silver mine maybe, but certainly not a blockbuster by Summer TV standards…But I Digress.)
So the next time you, or anybody else thinks that Conan’s show failed by itself Pre-Leno, just remember that there are other hours in the day that were filled out by Summer re-runs & bad reality shows.
So the REAL Reality of the situation is that NBC’s WEAK PRIME TIME schedulle is what gave Conan the bad break. Leno’s show was just the exclamation mark on the whole thing.
90% of the Blame goes to the Network, Leno gets 10% just for following orders, but I’m one of the few Conan-liking Leno-haters who thinks Leno is being pegged a little too hard for being the Chief bad guy in all of this (That title will forever belong to Jeff Zucker). In fact, I’m pretty sure Leno is a decent human being despite being–in all honesty–a Hack comic.
Conan, whether others think he’s funny or not, Really, honestly & until the end of time, did not deserve ANY of this, and I hope he at least gets nominated for his efforts.
End of Story!
I really liked the Conan Tonight Show episode in which he literally jumped through a ring of fire.
I know his Tonight Show was uneven, but Conan has always been uneven. You sit through Conan’s 5,000th reference to the fact that he was born to live in an Irish peat bog because you know that, sooner or later, he will jump through a ring of fire, or Andy will open the door of a blimp, or some other amazing thing will happen.
Sorry not allowed that picture of Conan is NBC Property and therefore TBS must pay us $32.5 Million for its use. I’m going to get that money back if it’s the last thing I do!
I’d love it if he won an Emmy. What a much needed slap in the face it would be to the suit clerks of NBC-ya!
The ads are not even funny.
I liked conan in the beginning but I hope he takes nbc as a learning lesson and get back to funny. The daily show is getting stale so he could take them.
Also, I was/am team leno.
You are/am an idiot.
Agreed.
What exactly was idiotic about that statement.
For a blissful few weeks he was out of the news.
Will this guy ever go away? Still cannot believe TBS is bumping George Lopez for Conan. Lopez is a hundred times funnier. No matter where Conan ends up, he’ll still suck.
George Lopez sucks. He relies on jokes about Latino-Americans. How funny…….*facepalm*
And yet here you are Jack, not only reading an article about Conan that you could’ve skipped, but also commenting on it. Apparently “the media” made you do it.
He was funny enough. Those words should be inscribed on his professional gravestone over at NBC–covered in weeds and spattered with bird crap though it might be. Colbert and Stewart have better writers, but even their jokes get tired after a while, and Conan was a great alternative, because it’s never about the writers with him. It’s all about the delivery. I still miss his Harry Potter impersonation. Plus, my 11-year-old loved him.
That pic of Conan is great. He looks like an old timey politician. Awesome!
i’m glad the tide seems to be turning against this narcissist. l-a-m-e.
Narcissistic? Holy shit, do you even know what that word means? You should re-watch Conan’s farewell speech on the Tonight Show if you think he’s “narcissistic”.
Here’s what I’d like to know. Conan receives good buzz, excellent buzz, on nearly all the Internet sites – Entertainment Weekly, People.com, etc. with the exception of this one. Whenever an item is posted, within minutes there are five comments saying something like “Conan is not funny. I’m Tean Leno.”
Forget that fact that no one under 55 is Team Leno and that as a comic recently pointed out “Leno fans are the C minus students of America.”
This is an entertainment industry web site, normally composed of hip young people, it’s aburd and obvious that there are NBC shills on here. There is simply no other explanation. Even TMZ, a low brow site that can’t hold a candle to Deadline.com, is generally pro Conan, and those people would rip a dead Brittany Murphy. (Or at least a dead Simon Monjack.)
Can anyone explain the out of proportion anti-Conan comments on this, the hippest industry site of all? A site that skews young? An extremely smart site? (Except when it links to Drudge.)
Nikki, stop posting all all the anti-Conan comments, it’s obvious these are NBC flacks. And welcome back, there was a huge void in your absence.
Perhaps the site doesn’t skew as young as you think David. Maybe other people prefer Leno over Conan. I like Conan a lot, but Lopez getting bumped for him doesn’t sit well with me, the same way Conan getting bumped by Leno didn’t sit well with me.
Conan is not a mainstream comedian, no matter how much rabble rousing his fans do on the interwebs.
Brick,
You do realize that Lopez was probably about to get canceled and welcomed O’Brien with open arms as it extended his shelf life? And that Conan called Lopez to make sure it was OK before saying yes to TBS?
Also, you do realize that Leno completely blind-sided Conan and did not call him before dislodging him? And that if Conan had called Jay he would’ve heard a resounding “Hell yes I care if you take my job! Go the F away.”
So, you can see the difference, right? Now scramble back to the NBC Publicity dept. Do they pay you by the hour or per post?
See but you have zero proof that Lopez was going to get canceled. You are using conjecture to try and prove a point. The fact is Lopez had to move back an hour, which was something Conan did not want to do with Leno. Blessing or no, it happened.
I don’t see Conan saying, “nah, it was wrong what Jay did to me, let me follow Lopez.”
Lastly, I do not work for NBC. I’m merely refuting your position and you’re getting all huffy about it. It’s not that serious.
Actually, it was Lopez who called Conan. Conan wasn’t gonna go to TBS originally because he didn’t think George Lopez would be down with the move TBS proposed, but Lopez himself took it upon himself to call Conan and convince him to make the deal. So George Lopez didn’t get bumped by any means. If he wasn’t cool with it, Conan wouldn’t have taken the gig.
Nikki didn’t write this post. But I wouldn’t be so quick to jump to the conclusion that NBC flacks are writing here. (And if so, who cares? Are we going to actively try to stifle one side of a feud just because we’re on the other side?)
No, the truth is, lots of crazy / dumb / annoying people write comments online, no matter what the venue. Simple as that. Somebody used this very site’s recent box office post to write a neoconservative rant, on the basis that the post was partially about Get Him to the Greek, and Russell Brand apparently makes anti-Bush jokes. I also remember some out-of-left-field racist comment on a recent Law & Order post. Where do these people come from? Why are they posting here? Who knows. But they do. If you don’t like, just ignore.
Maybe some have moved on? Conan’s been around for almost 20 years, now…i’m sub-30, fucking adored him and watched pretty religiously as a kid, but somewhere along the way got burned out on Conan/the talkshow format in general.
Now Greg Gutfeld? I’d walk through fire for that guy…
Do you really think he’d be off the air if he was making money for NBC? If one thing’s a given in Hollywood it’s that money rules.
CONANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
The only guy that’s funny at all in late night is Craig Ferguson. Smart, intellectual, original and really, really refreshing.
Craig’s funny as hell, but in a very different, almost British-sketch-comedy format way.
If Craig doesn’t get the Emmy coming off his Peabody win, I’d love it to go to Conan just to stick it in NBC’s face, but it’s hard to deny Jon or Stephen. I’m just hoping Craig gets credit for what he’s done. I guess he’d submit the Desmond Tutu episode again for the Emmys? One of these days he needs to actually give the audience of hobos their promised chicken just to throw them.
Where are these ads running? It doesn’t say anywhere unless I missed it????
