It’s Get Out Emmy Vote Time, and the networks and studios are taking their awards campaigns in and around and up in the air above
L.A. NBCU’s USA Network is running its biggest Emmy push ever this year, and hoping that the voters like ice cream or the beach (or both). Starting today, the cable network is deploying a Cool Haus truck to give away free ice cream sandwiches named after the network’s series at Los Angeles area locations with a high concentration of Industry types.
USA also has 3 planes flying in a formation over local studios and beaches this week carrying For Your Consideration banners for Burn Notice, White Collar and In Plain Sight. Those are the series which USA has put the most marketing muscle behind this Emmy season. (USA’s biggest success so far came from Monk‘s Tony Shalhoub, winner of 3 best comedy actor Emmys.)
I take issue with the airplane banners, especially since NBCU is at the forefront of Hollywood’s efforts to be environmentally conscious with its Green Is Universal campaign. But free ice cream is fine by me, and I don’t think a TV Academy membership badge is required to get one. (Whereas Universal Media Studios is betting that Emmy voters are regular Bloomingdale shoppers because of its For Your Consideration mannequin displays there. That may cost you.) Below is the list of the ice cream sandwich flavors and the truck’s itinerary:
Menu:
The Monk – Vanilla Bean
The American Character (series with Tom Brokaw) – Red Velvet
The Psych – Brown Butter Candied Bacon
The In Plain Sight – Chocolate Chipotle
The Burn Notice – Cinnamon
The Royal Pains – Balsamic Fig and Mascarpone

The White Collar - Mint Chip

Great idea! Except… I already voted. As did all of my friends in my peer group. And none of us voted for anything on USA. Do I still get the ice cream? Because God knows I would have changed my vote for a dollop of ice cream.
It’s my life goal to become a voting member of the Academy, so maybe this will make me feel like I’m almost there?
How is Psych not pineapple flavored?
That seems very neglectful on their part, doesn’t it? Psych=pineapple. Pina colada ice cream would have been a good choice, I think. Besides the fact that “Brown Butter Candied Bacon” just sounds extremely weird.
I know, Psych should be pineapple flavoured!! Brown Butter candied bacon sounds gross!
GOOD QUESTION!
MONK!!!
I can confirm that the ice cream was free, and they didn’t require any kind of proof that you were a voter. Everyone in our building ran to get some yesterday, but pretty soon passerby (and some tourists) were also joining in on the fun. I have to say that it definitely created some goodwill with potential viewers, though I’m not sure any of us were Emmy voters.
Psych should have been pineapple-flavored. Honestly, do the USA executives not know their own show?
If Matt Bomer personally paid me a visit I’m quite certain I could be swayed.
I’m a little confused about Psychs flavor. Anyone who has ever watched the show would have made it pineapple….. so something is clearly wrong here.
How does Psych not have a flying banner?
Only MONK!!!
