This riff off of Tom Cruise’s Tropic Thunder parody of a movie producer that was a hit at the MTV Movie Awards (and is a viral video phenom) couldn’t come at a better time for him. Because Cruise’s upcoming rom com with Cameron Diaz, Knight And Day, is tracking like a bomb. I’ve always said that, if Tom wants to have a film career again, he’s got to get out from under himself and start playing other people. And Les is a great character. UPDATE: Oops, I spilled the beans. Here comes Paramount with the announcement. The studio obviously had fun and wrote the release in “Les”-is-more style. Now, the question is whether Joel Silver will sue?
HOLLYWOOD, CA (June 9, 2010) – Paramount Pictures and MTV Films announced today that they are set to develop a movie around mega-producer Les Grossman. The announcement comes on the heels of Grossman’s groundbreaking and visionary production of the soon-to-be Emmy® award-winning 2010 MTV Movie Awards Sunday night. Tom Cruise, along with Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld of Red Hour Films will produce and have secured the life rights to Grossman. Grossman, best known as a mega producer, has most recently mentored talents such as Rob Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. In 2008, Grossman was introduced to the masses by Stiller in the comedy “Tropic Thunder” where the famed producer had a cameo playing himself. Said Ben Stiller: “Les Grossman’s life story is an inspiring tale of the classic human struggle to achieve greatness against all odds. He has assured me he plans to quote, ‘F**king kill the sh*t out of this movie and make Citizen f**king Kane look like a piece of crap home movie by the time we are done.’ I am honored to be working with him.” When asked what the screenplay was about Grossman responded: “To quote my great friend Kirk Lazarus, ‘I don’t read the script, the script reads me.’”Adam Goodman, Paramount Film Group President said, “Everything I learned in this business, I’ve learned from Les. I started out as his assistant, and from the first day he threw his desk at me when I got his lunch order wrong, I have loved him like a father. I am forever grateful to Ben and Stuart Cornfeld and their ability to secure his highly-coveted life rights,”Tom Cruise is said to be in talks to portray Grossman in the film.Michael Bacall (“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”) will write the script.

Hey! lets run this really funny joke into the ground.
Yea…I have to agree with this. As much as I cheerlead for Tom (cuz I truly enjoy watching him in films) I have never thought this character all that funny. It was entertaining for maybe…5 minutes and then it got tiresome and boring. It was nothing more than a stereotype of a very obnoxious man. Rude, yes; funny nope. But apparently “the kids today” with their knuckle dragging standards find it thoroughly pleasing, so here we go…
I like how any humor which you feel is beneath you is relegated to the arena of “knuckle dragging.”
And really, what IS comedy except the recognition of patterns and the revelation of their absurdity? Just because YOU don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s not funny.
Awesome about the Les Grossman film! Cruise danced JLo’s ass off on the MTV awards show as this character and the film ought to do real well.
…said the Paramount intern.
Ugh.
It couldn’t come at a better time for Cruise, but what about for fucking Par? What is Paramount doing??? Another big budget American comedy when they don’t even perform anymore… And on the heels of Dinner for Schmucks no less, which also looks set to bomb.
They could stand to gain a lot of money with The Last Airbender this summer. It is a pretty good show. Lets just hope M. Night whatever doesn’t screw it up.
from what I hear, he already has
This is the most retarded idea ever – after Tom’s Oprah sthick. MTV Movie Awards were idiotic and not even funny, and Les Grossman is a one trick pony.
Cool… I hope it works!
largest Ugh of all time!!!
Really? “Knight and Day” tracking badly? I’m surprised. Surely a wise man greenlit this quite costly motion picture. And on what grounds? Yes, I know, Cruise is not Cruise anymore, but come on, it’s Cameron Diaz. One of theeeee biggest female stars in the whole wide world? Isn’t she? Yeah, right, she isn’t.
So again, who greenlit “Knight and Day”?
As for Grossman, “Crash & burn” might be a good title.
If Knight and Day is a bomb, Les Grossman will be a dud. They should have greenlit MacGruber 2 instead.
If you change the words “secret agent” to “movie star” in the Knight & Day trailers, you have a film about a movie star who had a full blown break with reality and is now back on the hunt.
Knight & Day will be awesome, Cruise is playing himself.
It ain’t Silver!
Wait a minute Adam!! I thought you learned from me when i hired you on “BACKDRAFT”
Hell to the yes les grossman rules I will be first in line to see it..best news I have heard
And you are the reason why there are so many bad movies being made.
Im not sure weather this movie will be an good or not… but the character is hilarious and Paramounts timing is on point. If they continue to market the film the way they have started out, it should do huge #’s at the box office. It will be interesting to see what the plot of the film is though, that could make or break it.
Say what you will about Tommy Boy, it’s hard to deny how talented he can be when he wants to put a little effort in and play a character that isn’t just a glorified version of himself (and when he has a team of people writing funny ass shit for him). I did think the MTV performances were a bit too much and no where near as funny as the Tropic Thunder scenes. I guess, Les is more (see what I did there?) which could spell trouble for a full length feature film.
The success of the character/film could hinge on whether or not the audience is able to get lost in his performance and basically forget that it is Tom fucking Cruise they are watching.
It’s more Scott Rudin and Stuart Cornfeld than Joel Silver.
Please Paramount make a deal for Luketic to direct!!!!!!!!
Got to love the Grossman. Watching a bald dude swear for a couple of hours will be a heck of a lot more entertaining than most of the movies coming out of Hollywood these days.
Loved the character in “Tropic Thunder” and on the awards the other night. Think a movie can work if it’s packed with celebrities playing themselves.
“Knight and Day” looks fun to me, and James Mangold has delivered a lot of good films.
Seriously? That’s pathetic. Cruise is nothing more than a parody of himself at this point. I don’t think anyone over the age of 15 watches the MTV Awards anymore. Oh how the mighty have fallen. From films like Born on the 4th, Jerry Maquire and Magnolia to this. What happens next? Does Cruise balance a ball on his nose like a trained seal?
If K & D is tracking badly, what makes Par think Les Grossman will fare any better? IMO it won’t. It’s a one note joke. There is truly nothing left of Cruise and its disappointing.
Alpha male Hollywood insider jokes, cursing, and really bad fake hair. Sounds like Entourage.
What’s up with the hardy boys?
I’ll just throw in SWIMMING WITH SHARKS if I want to watch a film about an asshole producer.
Wow. All the power of an SNL film… without the SNL.
Stay golden, Paramount!
I love the character, but this is going to suck hard as a feature. Cruise FINALLY found something people like and he’s clinging to it for dear life…
I’m sorry, but am I really the only person who doesn’t find the Les Grossman schtick funny at all??! I give Cruise credit for learning the dance routine and really delving into the character, but I don’t recall laughing one time during Tropic Thunder or the VMA’s…
As for Knight and Day, I think it’ll do better than expected. Maybe not $300M or anything, but it’s hard to imagine it not getting to $100M domestic and more foreign. The trailers appear to show a lighter side of Cruise who is willing to re-invent himself as a parody of the former Cruise image. Think it’s smart not to take himself too seriously.
But, what the hell do I know? I actually enjoy watching 2 1/2 Men…
No, you’re not. I read all about how “brilliant” it was, and how “unrecognizable” he was in TT. I went to the movie, heard Tom’s unchanged voice, recognized him immediately in his bald cap, and thought it looked like one of those embarrassing moments on SNL, where the host hasn’t got any acting/comedy chops. Best wishes to those who pay to see this. Kudos to the company if they can make a killing on it.
You’re not the only one. I didn’t think he was funny in Tropic Thunder, and he wasn’t funny at the MTV awards. A constant stream of profanities is not humor.
