This riff off of Tom Cruise’s Tropic Thunder parody of a movie producer that was a hit at the MTV Movie Awards (and is a viral video phenom) couldn’t come at a better time for him. Because Cruise’s upcoming rom com with Cameron Diaz, Knight And Day, is tracking like a bomb. I’ve always said that, if Tom wants to have a film career again, he’s got to get out from under himself and start playing other people. And Les is a great character. UPDATE: Oops, I spilled the beans. Here comes Paramount with the announcement. The studio obviously had fun and wrote the release in “Les”-is-more style. Now, the question is whether Joel Silver will sue?
HOLLYWOOD, CA (June 9, 2010) – Paramount Pictures and MTV Films announced today that they are set to develop a movie around mega-producer Les Grossman. The announcement comes on the heels of Grossman’s groundbreaking and visionary production of the soon-to-be Emmy® award-winning 2010 MTV Movie Awards Sunday night. Tom Cruise, along with Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld of Red Hour Films will produce and have secured the life rights to Grossman. Grossman, best known as a mega producer, has most recently mentored talents such as Rob Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. In 2008, Grossman was introduced to the masses by Stiller in the comedy “Tropic Thunder” where the famed producer had a cameo playing himself. Said Ben Stiller: “Les Grossman’s life story is an inspiring tale of the classic human struggle to achieve greatness against all odds. He has assured me he plans to quote, ‘F**king kill the sh*t out of this movie and make Citizen f**king Kane look like a piece of crap home movie by the time we are done.’ I am honored to be working with him.” When asked what the screenplay was about Grossman responded: “To quote my great friend Kirk Lazarus, ‘I don’t read the script, the script reads me.’”Adam Goodman, Paramount Film Group President said, “Everything I learned in this business, I’ve learned from Les. I started out as his assistant, and from the first day he threw his desk at me when I got his lunch order wrong, I have loved him like a father. I am forever grateful to Ben and Stuart Cornfeld and their ability to secure his highly-coveted life rights,”Tom Cruise is said to be in talks to portray Grossman in the film.Michael Bacall (“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”) will write the script.

Yup. Nothing says “Hilarious” and “Box office gold” more than seeing that comic genius Tom Cruise – bald, paunchy, hairy and jewish! – scream and berate others for 90 minutes. Comedy Gold.
If you want pure comic genius, in a pseudo studio head, simply go back 25 years and check out Rick Moranis as Larry Siegel in many episodes of SCTV. “You don’t know, you don’t know!!” THAT was a character and that was genius. What Tom Cruise is doing is not funny, not original and it plain pathetic.
The fact that they’re going to make a film of this character speaks to the insularity of Hollywood. Because everyone within 5 feet of Tom Cruise over last week congratulated him, they take that to mean THE WORLD is clamoring for this movie. It’s not. Get out in the real world and test the zeitgeist, not some sycophantic yes men.
Personally I don’t think this will ever happen, and it shouldn’t. No one needs another one-joke comedy.
Remember…Rick Moranis as Larry Siegel. “You don’t know, you don’t know!!!”
Wow, you got Michael Bacall who’s Scott Pilgrim script will tank hard in August, Tom Cruise who’s career is over in the states but still brings in some foreign – BUIT you’re going to cover him up so no one overseas will even know it’s him – and the great promotion department that is Paramount – nice!!!
I take it they don’t have toilets on the Paramount lot anymore because if they did have toilets they could have just flushed the money down one of them.
“I take it they don’t have toilets on the Paramount lot anymore because if they did have toilets they could have just flushed the money down one of them.”
HAAAAHAAAAA! good one!
does anyone else find this character to be anti-semetic? ugh.
My god, could that press release be any more smarmy and aren’t-we-cool?
“Knight & Day” looks like it just stumbled out of the late ‘eighties. Just a bloated, hapless, clueless. It’s as if Doug Liman never existed!
Maybe Katie can introduce Tom to Doug.
What a terrible idea. The schtick is barely funny for a minute, how is he going to do it for an entire feature? Paramount goes for this, and won’t do Anchorman 2?
“Knight & Day” is tracking like a bomb due to its corny, 1982 title. Studios all have title consultants but someone should be sued for unleashing such a stupid moniker in 2010. Les Grossman film will be funny, good character, well written & well acted.
It’s going to be GREAT! GO TOM! WELCOME BACK!
if you ever worked in any form of the business during the Miramax heyday you would have heard everyone saying this was about Harvey. Harvey himself would have called to tell you that.
Harvey was more like the pig in BABE.
It’s damn tough to make films about the biz that return on their investment. Are the kiddos really going to pay to see 90 minutes of Les? Me think not.
Tom needs to re-visit the themes of Jerry MacGuire, but in a new film. He needs to show vulnerability and conscience and a man on the verge of a nervous break down. THAT will resuscitate his career.
Les could be the final nail in the coffin.
Seriously? Seriously?! Tom Cruise is a crazy hack whose time has passed. Why does Hollywood insist on foisting this insane has-been onto the general public? At this point, I’d actually feel bad for him if I didn’t despise him so much.
I don’t dislike Tom Cruise but it’s true that he is not a comedian. Same with Alec Baldwin, why is everybody trying to be a comedian today? The character could be funny in the hands of a capable comedian but Tom Cruise is not that man.
you are insane, baldwin works better as a comic actor than almost anything else, excepting maybe uber-heel
but cruise doesn’t really have comic timing, his one good comedy Risky Business was mostly him as the straight guy
Well if you wanna waste money right now make a Tom Cruise Movie.
This is a stupid idea
Sounds like fun!
when Knight and Day bombs this project will disappear
an inside-hollywood macgruber — holy bad bad idea
Hey, let’s get Ratner or McGee to Direct.
Thank you.
Hate to say it but Knight and Day looks pretty good.
Sounds more like its from the “geniuses” that brought us “Macgruber”.
I mean really, why on earth does ANY studio suit think a one-note character like Les Grossman would work stretched out over a 90 minute (or less) movie? Maybe it would be better for Cruise to “inject” this character into an occasional Stiller movie. But for crying out loud, a whole Grossman film?? I’d rather watch a Harvey Weinstein sex tape!
Hey Paramount — How about a Kirk Lazarus movie instead?
I don’t get this character. It’s not satire, it’s “I’m drunk, let me do an imitation of somebody…” type of acting.
Tom Cruise is still Tom Cruise whatever he does and nobody likes him anymore except some “guys” in Beverly Hills.
He should also play himself and have Les Grossman kick his own ass about scientology and how a movie star should STFU regarding his wacked out personal life when there is a pic to promote.
Knight and Day current tracking has it for a 3 day take of $18 Million and a 5 day take of around $25 Million. That’s considered a Bomb when you are Tom Cruise especially even with all the horrible pre-release buzz his last movie Valkyrie took in $29.5 Million over 4 days in December of 2008.
Either the Reviews or the Word of Mouth is going to have to be super strong on this one for it to have any chance to get to $100 Million domestically. Overseas it will do great business and there is no question about that!
I know! Sign Martin Short to co-star and pair up Tommy with Jiminy Glick in a buddy cop film. It’ll write itself! All twelve people who go to see it will love it!
Wow. And the genius creative forces continue to rein in Hollywood… And the imploding at Paramount continues…
