I’m posting for my colleague Mike Fleming who just filed this from his vacation:
In a rare occurrence for a star-driven straight play, the August Wilson revival Fences recouped it investment in eight weeks. The play broke the Cort Theatre house record again last week with $1.025 million. Fences heads into Tony weekend with 10 nominations including for leads Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. The play has five weeks left to run before discussions begin on the movie adaptation with Washington and Davis.

Well-deserved. The play is a classic and the performances are stellar across the board, the only weak link being Chris Chalk’s “Cory.” Would much rather have seen his understudy, Jason Dirden in the role.
best production of this play… and best experience i’ve ever had in a theatre. hands down, a singular experience. deserves every accolade and dollar it gets.
I’m 14 and am using my dad’s computer. (Don’t flame me!)
Are you saying there’s an entertainment thing out there for people over 13?
You’re all *borks!
Who’ll want to see that!?
*(5-16 slang for “Big Dorks”.)
Good luck with the whole “brain cell” thing, there, sparky.
My (eventual) wife and I saw the LA production with Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett back in 2006. It’s a fantastic piece of theater, always to the point where it’s impossible to screw up. Any film version becomes an immediate frontrunner at that year’s Oscars.
