EXCLUSIVE: John Logan’s two-man play about art was the big winner at the Tonys last night with six awards, including best play and best featured actor, Eddie Redmayne. Logan and Remayne’s collaboration appears headed to the small screen next: the young British actor is in talks to play a lead in Logan’s drama pilot for HBO Miraculous Year, which is being directed by Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow.
Norbert Leo Butz, Hope Davis, Frank Langella and Patti LuPone also are in talks to join the Broadway-themed project, which Logan and Bigelow are executive producing with Lydia Pilcher.
Miraculous Year is described as an examination of a New York family as seen through the lens of Terry Segal (Butz) a charismatic, self-destructive Broadway composer and lyricist. Langella would play Terry’s father Alex, a famous painter and imposing figure who is beginning to feel the effects of aging. Davis would play Terry’s sister Mandy Vance, a corporate lawyer who has never quite made it to the top tier and has always lived in the shadows of her famous father and
brother. Redmayne would play a captivating and sexy singer/dancer in Terry’s new show who will come to play a major part in Terry’s life. In a role that could be recurring, LuPone would play a Broadway diva.
Redmayne co-stars opposite Alfred Molina in Red, which converted six of its seven Tony nominations to lead the list of winners last night and score the most statuettes for a play in years. He next stars in the big-budget miniseries The Pillars of the Earth, which will run on Starz this summer. Butz is a seasoned
Broadway actor and won Tony in 2005 for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. He most recently co-starred on ABC’s The Deep End. This marks the third HBO project for Davis in the past year. She also co-starred on In Treatment last year and portrays Hillary Clinton in the film Special Relationship. Veteran stage and screen actor Langella has won 3 Tonys, most recently for Frost/Nixon, which also earned him an Oscar nomination. LuPone has won Tonys for Evita and Gypsy.
Miraculous Year is one of three high-profile pilots HBO is producing this year along with David Milch/Michael Mann’s drama Luck starring Dustin Hoffmann and Nick Nolte, which is in post-production, and Bill Condon’s comedy Tilda starring Diane Keaton, which is now filming.

Molina and Redmayne are both fantastic in Red. It’s head scratching to me that Molina can make a career in films but Redmayne is choosing series television while in his 20′s, he’s a major talent on film and stage.
Can’t quite picture anyone but Kevin Kline playing Terry in the pilot of Miraculous Year. The HBO pilot that David Auburn wrote that he chose over this must be brilliant.
Redmayne was quite goofy in Tess but gotta give it to Brits and their ambition to conquer it all
Patty Lupone as a broadway diva, does this even count as an acting project for lupone?
I don’t get Norbert Leo Butz’s appeal…
does anyone get norbert leo butz’s appeal other than development execs and a few housewives in NY?
Wait, i’m a little confused by the cast and the characters they’re playing. Can anyone explain it to me please?
I am also at loss, would be great if someone could.
I have had the opportunity to work with Norbert from early on in his career and I think this project is the perfect vehicle to show the world the kind of nuanced and compassionately flawed characters he can manifest. As an actor your persona is shaped by the roles you are offered, but I think this will truly be a break-out role for him.
