After two weeks of reading up-and-coming young actors for X-Men: First Class, 20th Century Fox has formally offered the role of Magneto to Michael Fassbender. Fassbender is also being courted to play a villain in the next Spider-Man. He can’t do both — and Fox is confident they will make a deal and have him join James McAvoy, who was recently set to play Xavier. Fassbender was offered the role today after reading last week, along with Aaron Johnson, Andrew Garfield, Jack Huston and Eddie Redmayne. Fox will now cast the rest of the roles, with thesps like Ben Walker (but apparently not playing The Beast, as has been rumored), Rosamund Pike and Amber Heard among the names bandied. Director Matthew Vaughn starts production in August for a June 3, 2011 release.
Fassbender, who burst on the scene playing Bobby Sands in the Steve McQueen-directed Hunger, had a beefcake turn in 300 and costarred in Inglourious Basterds. He opens tomorrow in Jonah Hex and also stars in the Neil Marshall-directed Centurion, which opens August 27.

I can’t wait for that movie to come out! Awesome news—good casting ideas!
He has suchl star quality. Can’t wait to see him in many many films…..
SOunds good. This sounds a lot better than the previous efforts already.
i thought jonah hex got moved to september.
Aaron Johnson is mentioned again in this news. I hope he plays as Cyclops.
I have read elsewhere that both Aaron Johnson and Andrew Garfield are near locks for roles in this. I expect the former to be Cyclops and maybe the latter will be Beast.
Ah, finally! An upcoming actor worth my money. Not some talentless beefcake, not some carbon copy of previous stars.
A real actor. Someone with mettle.
Someone worthy of portraying a young Mckellen, which is what this Magneto should and hopefully will be. Don’t stray too far from what’s established. Dare to invite comparisons.
Amber Heard? How is that possible? Check with directors who have worked with her.
Who is Benjamin Walker? And what role is he playing?
The very definition of a pointless project therefore resulting in a waste of everyones talents. I like Matthew Vaughan and all but the world does not need another X-Men flick. The last two were shitty to say the least, and sorry to say the goodwill from the first two films have left the building. I know why this is being done so that the rights don’t revert back to Disney, but still this will fall hard even if its a decent flick. It really doesn’t matter any more. The X-Men had their day in the sun. Time to move on.
Michael Fassbender should play every role in every movie. He’s the future!
Aaron Johnson would rock the house as Cyclops. The character deserves a young actor with some gravity and presence.
The fans at Fassinating Fassbender are so excited about Michael taking on the role of Magneto! He’s going to be MAGnificent!
After seeing him in Inglorious Basterds did anybody else think Fassbender would make for an amazing James Bond?
