It does look pretty good, although I would have assumed a larger scale battle against the predators (i.e., an invasion of sorts) was going to be next.
Brody might not seem like the conventional “tough guy”, but he portrays stress flawlessly. And there’s enough tough guy juice with Trejo, Fishburne and Goggins.
The original Predator is one of the great genre screenplays of all time.
Nobody wants an army of predators and a large-scale war, they want individual men being hunted down. I.e., actual characters and increasing stakes until only one man is left standing. Antecedents include Greek myth, The Most Dangerous Game and Alien/s.
That’s what makes the mythology of this franchise. NOT “bigger is better.” And the fans know that.
Sort of agree, but Alien v Predator was pretty good with multiple Predators. Maybe a predator gets captured and its crew comes to break him loose. A wider conflict.
I like the fact they seem to have smarten (is that a word?) the hero.
Yeah, but you’re looking for “smartened.”
Looks fabulous. All the iconic Predator touches and sounds awesome. RR is a fan (obviously) and this is the kinda popcorn picture that makes me excited about going to the cinema. It’s been way too long.
It’s a feeling that a lot of people haven’t had in a long time. I’m hoping this could change that.
Agree on Brody. He can act and not just pose so he isn’t as out of place as some of the 20something himbos with waxed asses and tousled surfer dude hair trying to play butch.
The quality has to be a lot better than the AVP movies, but I’m having a hard time seeing the box office doing a lot better. The trailers and commercials seem too generic to really attract a lot of younger moviegoers, and the damage to the franchise for viewers nostalgic about the first 2 has already been done.
Am I the only one that thinks Fox could back out of Scott’s Alien prequel or at least try to beat down the budget if Predators doesn’t fare well?
Everyone keeps saying “Weird, Brody isn’t a muscle-man the way Arnold was… what are they thinking?” as if Danny Glover never starred in Predator 2.
and Predator 2 sort of sucked!
Pandora, anyone? No? OK.
Up until the first minute, you’re kinda thinking “this is going to be such a huge hit” but then the interest gradually dies.
One of the things that made the first one interesting was that humans were protecting themselves from an outer space intruder – which tends to get you sympathizing with the humans. But now you’re thinking, WTF are the humans doing on their planet?
The humans were brought to that against their will.
JKL,
Your leaden logic fails to defy gravity. You wrote: “One of the things that made the first one interesting was that humans were protecting themselves from an outer space intruder – which tends to get you sympathizing with the humans. Um, Aliens anyone?
“But now you’re thinking, WTF are the humans doing on their planet?”
No you’re not, because they say right in the trailer that they were dropped there. AKA they were “chosen.” So I would gather the Predators picked the most worthy victims and brought them to the game preserve.
Actually, the Predators abducted these humans and dropped them on this game-preserve planet to hunt. This isn’t even the Predators’ home planet (which was seen in AVP 2). Duh!
If the trailer is interesting enough, people will pay attention. So what does this tell about the trailer? That it feels like effin’ homework, THAT’S WHAT IT TELLS!
I will tell you this though: Adrian Brody is perfect, absolutely perfect for this film. He brings a lot of credibility (acting and quality wise). Robert Rodriguez screams gore B movies.
They were brought there as “game.” The trailer makes that clear.
Let’s make the same movie 9 times and see if those suckers notice!
BTW – When are they going to do a sequel or pre-quel or Part II of The Thing? I know of a few great storylines out there.
I know Brody is cast as the lead, but it looks like an ensemble picture. The Predators are the stars. I’ll see this. Looks entertaining.
I’ve yet to see the film but at the moment am prepard to give Brody a chance to play buffed-up hero. As Joe says above, the guy is actually an actor as well. It’ll also be interesting to see if Nimrod Antal can transit to the director A-list. Kontroll was excellent and he made an assured Hollywood debut with Vacancy, so I wish him luck.
Congrats Nimrod!
hmm .. reverse situation … Who are the aliens?
Brody does “look tired” better than any actor on the planet.
And see him in Summer of Sam to see how ripped he can be.
I think this one looks great. Good to see some R-rated action in the theaters again and not A-Team or Knight and Day dumbed down stuff.
That pencil-necked geek/nerd Adrien Brody as the HERO?!!? Hahahhaaha. We don’t need another Arnold, but at least someone with an INKLING of machismo in them.
Ironically, most historical men of action actually looked like Brody rather than big beefy men. Go to some museums, and look, for example, at the armor that real fighters would wear. they were much smaller in size than the towering image that modern cinema creates.
Very very very pleased Brody is in this, though the first trailers left me dubious. His reaction shots while falling to the planet are priceless! I’ll be there opening weekend.
Go Nimrod, go!
it just doesn’t look very compelling. can’t say why. it’s really trying to sell you it’s ass off, but there’s something missing. it’s not brody, brody’s great casting actually, they eliminated any comparison with Ahnuld with that one, and he’s very interesting, but the movie just looks empty. i hope it’s good, though. we need a great, vicious action film. it’s been a long, long time.
How long before Hollywood just clones the “Predator” comics of the mid-90′s for a buck? As far as a prequel, I’d like to see them do “The Bloody Sands of Time”.
