EXCLUSIVE: Jamie Foxx is getting entrepreneurial with a new drama TV project. I hear the Oscar winner over the past two weeks shot a trailer for a potential drama series entitled Tommy’s Little Girl. Selma Blair and Paul Sorvino star in the trailer for the project, which is based on an idea by Foxx. It revolves around several older mobster guys, played by Sorvino, Sopranos alum Tony Sirico and James Russo, and centers on Sorvino’s relationship with his daughter, played by Blair. Foxx is currently editing the trailer for the project, which is being financed by a private investor. When ready, it will be taken out to the top cable networks. Foxx has been focusing on TV producing lately.

This past pilot season, he executive produced a sketch-comedy pilot for Fox. Foxx is with CAA; Blair with Gersh; Sorvino with Innovative and KLWG; Sirico with Bob McGowan.

I wish there was more private financing in television and an indie TV community, which could rival the indie film community. It would open the doors for so much more variety and creativity in the market.
it’ll never happen. At least with an indie film, there are other avenues for the investor to get their money back. With financing a TV pilot, especially a trailer, there’s absolutely no way to get the money back if the show isn’t picked up.
Precisely. The biggest thing being that a DVD of a sole pilot is pretty much worthless. Good luck trying to get an investor to foot the bill for 10-13 episodes of a show that might never receive distribution.
“centers on Sorvino’s relationship with his daughter, played by Blair.” – Sounds like an interesting theme. One of the best parts of Soprano’s was the family interactions.
actuallly the family part was sometimes the weakest on the Sopranos
Maybe not as entertaining, but interesting and different compared to other mob stories.
Nothing screams win like “spec trailer.”
no..nothing screams win like “James Russo!” …
Maybe Jamie needs a big write-off – better than pissing it away on the stock market or bad loans to friends.
Oh wow. A story about The Mob. How original. From Jamie Foxx no less! But with a twist. I’m going to go out on a limb and say one of the character names will be named Tommy or Pauly, and even though they’re murderers, they’re murderers with a heart of gold.
And some of you writers wrack your brain trying to come up with inspiring original material.
The Italian Mafioso theme is overdone. Why this Jamie? As if any of these actors have a shortage of opportunity to work. There are countless minority actors who could benefit from a series about the Jamaican Shower Posse (Who are all over the news, btw) if one has a taste for the criminal element but instead we get more of the same recycled rubbish. Minority programming has been disappearing from network television. We’re left with Reality Shows produced by people like Cris ABREGO no less as our only outlet and even that is coming to an end with the likes of the Kardashians claiming that territory. As one of the few blacks in Hollywood who can actually get a project off the ground Foxx has an obligation to create work for the often overlooked black writers, actors, producers and directors. Why not aspire to be the Bill Cosby of the 21st century? It’s obvious no one else will give us a shot Jamie. Let’s not forget the opportunity the Wayans gave you.
Jamie Foxx has provided plenty of opportunities for other black actors, musicians and comedians, let the man branch out and do something different. If this works out ok, i am sure he will use the additional clout create something for black actors. Sometimes you have to build up your captial before you can step out there.
Ed,
Your comment itself was one of the least original I’ve ever read.
And speaking of that adorable son of Italy, Paul Sorvino, he was very vocal in his bleating about the horrible Ital mob steeotyping in the Sopranos. Despite the fact he had a huge role as a fat garlic-slicing capo in Gooodfellas. Now do you understand why the Italian army ran from their posts in WWII? It’s cultural.
The Mafia sells. Everyone loves to watch stuff about the Mob. I’m tired of cop and medical dramas! I hope they have good writers in mind and I hope that it gets picked up.
Ted, they use those names a lot because Italians name their kids after Saints. What’s wrong with that?
