Janeane Garofalo is in negotiations to join CBS’ Criminal Minds spinoff, while Andre Holland is set to co-star on the new NBC comedy series Friends with Benefits. Garofalo will play a new regular on the ABC Studios/CBS Studios-produced Criminal Minds spinoff, which
was picked up for midseason. Also adding a new female regular following the axing of A.J. Cook is the original Criminal Minds series. Garofalo, who would co-star opposite Forest Whitaker, is coming off another drama series turn on Fox’s 24. Holland too will play a regular on the 20th TV/Imagine-produced ensemble comedy Friends with Benefits, which is recasting two of the male leads in the pilot. Holland’s character is described as an oversexed personal trainer and king of the douchbags. The actor, who did another pilot for NBC this past season, Rockford Files, is repped by Paradigm.

I hear Paget Brewster is looking for a job.
No. Please don’t send a great actress like Paget Brewster to this crappy show. Especially if she’s supposed to play Prentiss. Odds are, the only way her character would fit into the show is if they gave her a personality transplant. Besides, with the treatment she and AJ Cook had, they shouldn’t be used to improve the spin off. Let Suspect Behaviour take care of its own problems and let Paget and AJ get other jobs on hopefully better shows.
According to PagetPaget on Twitter, the upcoming Season 6 is her last on “Criminal Minds.” After Season 6, I’m done watching “Criminal Minds” and I’m not going to watch the spinoff. I didn’t care for the CM-to-spinoff crossover episode, and I do not like Forest Whitaker in this role.
Is “Suspect Behaviour” the title of the Criminal Minds spinoff, or is it just describing CBS’ behavior toward Criminal Minds and CSI stars A. J. Cook, Paget Brewster and Liz Vassey? [Yeah, a big ol' S for sarcasm]
Open note to CBS: Adding an actress with major geek cred to the spin-off certainly helps *that* series (Janeane Garofalo rocks, IMO.), but don’t go and think that that in any way, shape or form makes up for the treatment of A.J. Cook and Paget Brewster on the mothership series.
Many of us know that budget issues aren’t a zero-sum game between series — it does not follow that, as some of the more enraged fans have suggested, stopping the spin-off would result in those funds going to Criminal Minds to pay for Cook and Brewster back on the show full time. So it does follow that casting issues are likewise not a zero-sum game between series, whether or not financial considerations are involved. The addition of what one particular woman brings to the spin-off show does not make up for the loss of what two particular women bring to Criminal Minds.
Besides, Garofalo is a great political speaker — the increasingly regressive CBS will probably fire her by the end of the spin-off’s first season for either just being a woman or just being a liberal. Or both.

Rob, get a life. You’ve lost perspective.
What’s your damage, son? Fans are still pissed off about AJ and Paget being let go, and they have every reason to be.
Yes. Get a life. Please. Rob, don’t pack your bags. “Many of us…” (IN CENTRAL MISSOURI mind you) “…know that budget issues aren’t a zero-sum game between series-”. Go back to doing…uhhh…whatever people in “Central Missouri” do.
Wow, excellent job at throwing vague regional insults without refuting anything that was said with, you know, FACTS.
**Wow, excellent job at throwing vague regional insults without refuting anything that was said with, you know, FACTS.**
Yeah, that’s usually Garofalo’s style. Ever hear her talk politics, the Bible, the way normal people live, or any other topic she hasn’t got a clue about? What a stupid brainless bitch she is. She looks like a hermaphrodite Woody Allen and has the brains of blowfly larva. How the hell does she get work? She’s a windfall for the right – as a poster girl for the left – and she has zip talent. Her dumb off-script droolings constitute the only ink she gets these days. Any producer would be nuts to hire her. I wouldn’t assault my ears or eyeballs with such a piece of cloggage.
How on earth did you confuse her with Sarah Palin? Now there’s someone who truly has no clue–and whose only value is as a “flag-wrapped fuck toy” for fascism-hungry wingers…
“The addition of what one particular woman brings to the spin-off show does not make up for the loss of what two particular women bring to Criminal Minds. ”
Which is what I think CBS is trying to do. “We’re totally not sexist at all. It was just a coincidence that two out of three women Criminal Minds are leaving the show. Because look! Because look! Not only are we bringing in a new actress to replace one of the departing ones, but we’re increasing the number of women on the spin off.” I find it pretty suspect that they only added another character after the response to the decisions about AJ and Paget – most of those responses specifying sexism. Same way I find it suspect that only after people started to object to AJ being fired that news of a new actress being hired came out.
And, I read that Janeane wasn’t free before, but if they had a character in mind all along they could have had someone else play the part. I don’t think they’d keep a character on ice on the off chance that one day a specific actress would be available. So yes, I find the timing very curious indeed.
Garafolo is the worst actress I have ever seen. I can’t believe CBS would cast her in this role on their new series. What a horrible decision. She is a terrible speaker too. The person above is nuts!!
If she is cast in this show, it goes automatically to the “Do Not Watch” list. Loved “24″ and she almost made it unwatchable. Get this dried up bitter has-been off TV forever. She makes this world a little less livable. Maybe she should make a pact with Rosie O’Donnell and stay hidden away for the good of mankind.
If the spinoff is anything like that episode this year with Forrest Whitaker it will be incredibly unwatchable, a cheap exploitation of the original series attempting to sucker the audience. If they got rid of Joe Montegna and kept the blonde then at least the original would still have a chance.
It is hard to judge the complete flavor Of a spin-off when the show’s pilot is done back-door on the show it’s spinning off of.
Just take a look at the Navy:NCIS pilot on JAG and then take a look at the first episode of NCIS and you can see some tweeking off the bat.
Dtruth27:
She wouldn’t sleep with you, huh?
Someone would want to sleep with Janeane Garofalo? Man, that’s desperation! Who’d be next for that guy, Jorja Fox?
While I’m pretty sure she’ll sleep with anyone that will give her a paycheck, I wouldn’t sleep with her using your penis.
I can only imagine how terrible that thing must smell – old, bitter and useless – just like her.
Im definitely, and I know many CM fans who would never watch this show.
Nice to meet you, Definitely.
Forrest Whitaker and Garofolo. Nice job CM2. Despite what some people may think of her I think it is a great addition. I’m really starting to look forward to this show. Anybody know when its airing?
“Anybody know when its airing?”
It’s a midseason replacement show. According to tvtropes, midseason is anywhere between December and early May. So somewhere in that area between 2010-2011.
but if one of the new hour shows fail right away,or there’s a delay in one of the hour reality shows for whatever reason, it could air sooner than that.
My gut feeling is THE DEFENDERS might be the first to go,actually if Jerry and Jim don’t click as a team with the American public. BLUE BLOODS and 5-0 seems to me to be the shows they’d stick it out with.
It’s a funny thing–most of CBS’s fall stuff promo’d thus far looks surprisingly weak. THE DEFENDERS and MIKE AND MOLLY? And as much as I like Alex O’Loughlin, HAWAII FIVE-O is still very much a question mark.
Let me guess: her character will be a ‘tech-hipster’, have tattoos, piercings, little rectangle ‘tech’ eyeglasses and went to an Ivy league school, but was too smart and dropped out and then worked ‘black-ops for the CIA/FBI. Oh and her partner/co-worker will be a gorgeous thin babe who gets all the guys including the one she secretly has a crush on. And she will probably be an expert marksman and have a black belt in karate. Boring…been there, done that…
Yeah… they could cast the Goddess Herself (aka Betty White) and I still won’t be watching ANY Criminal Minds after AJ Cook’s departure. Wasn’t planning on watching the spinoff before; definitely not watching now.
Designated female character for the bare minimum quota? Seems CBS would be happy if women didn’t exist, or just “shut up” and forked over their cash. CM and its spin off are tainted. No thanks. And Rob Jensen’s comments are always interesting.
A new reason I will not be watching this show now. Thanks CBS as I will be able to free up another DVR spot. Didn’t watch a whole season of 24 because she was in it and won’t support any show she is on ever.
I like Janeane Garofalo quite a bit, she would be a reason to watch CM2. That said, the episode where they introduced Forrest Whitaker and his team was not a very good episode. It was surprisingly crappy. I’m guessing that they had a hard time juggling all the characters in such a short time span. They should have made it a two parter which would have allowed all the characters to seem like people as oppose to exposition machines spouting out shit. I also think it is wrong to get rid of Ms. Brewster and Ms. Cook, though I’ve seen other shows do this before and it either works or not. They are both talented actresses and I’m sure we’ll see them both again very soon.
Garofalo is Exhibit A of alienating the audience, and how women who trade on geek sex appeal and nothing else don’t age well. Plenty of Liberals don’t offend Conservatives (half the country), examples including Woody Harrelson, Ed Begley Jr., and Michael Douglas. They’re plenty liberal, express their minds, and hold beliefs the complete opposite to half the country.
But they have plenty of conservative fans. Because those guys don’t adopt a lecturing, hectoring tone unbecoming from wealthy, famous celebrities who live like minor royalty compared to ordinary people. They don’t assume evil natures or motives on the part of those folks who hold differing opinions. They’re not constantly lecturing on the “evils” of America and critically, ordinary Americans. They’re good natured and thankful for living the lives they lead (of wealth and power).
Plenty of Conservatives LOVED Garofalo in the early 1990′s. They knew she was ultra-liberal, they didn’t care. But she threw it away for the satisfaction of being part of the uber-cool Hollywood crowd. Folks WANT to like actors. It takes a remarkable effort to turn a considerable part of them off.
Garofalo is a bad move for any series depending on broad appeal. For something like DEXTER or whatever splatter stuff Showtime plans next, sure. On CBS, where they NEED conservative viewers? Nope. Those tats did not help either, made her look cheap and trashy.
Well said.
“…women who trade on geek sex appeal and nothing else don’t age well.”
Shoot, whiskey–to you, _no_ woman ages well…or is ever beautiful enough unless she’s a big-racked graphic-novel character. It’s guys like you who give fan boys a bad name.
I have considered giving the new ‘Minds’ spinoff a shot, but I will NOT be going there if they hire that shrill, angry Oompa-loompa.
The ick! factor is just too high.

“Those guys [Harrelson, Begley, Douglas] don’t adopt a hectoring, lecturing tone.”
Say what?!
Harrelson: Climbed the Golden Gate Bridge in 2003 to unfurl an environmentalist banner. With Earth First!, yet. He spoke out against the war in Iraq before it was fashionable to. Advocates for legalization of Marijuana (and is a strong activist for the commercial uses of Hemp), although he is reluctant to describe himself as an activist, he is one.
Begley, Jr.: One of the first advocates of electric car. Often heckled by conservatives for using a bicycle.
Douglas: Anti-nuke activist who was ridiculed by conservatives for producing and starring in The China Syndrome. Often hectored by conservatives for being a prominent member of the Liberal Hollywood Elite (as also happens to Harrelson and Begley, Jr.)
IMO, they’re all at least as activist as Garofalo is.
That you don’t see it just goes to show the sexist double-standard with which women are treated by various subsets of men. Although it should come as no surprise that a conservative thinks that a liberal woman is more “hectoring and lecturing” than a liberal male who hectors and lectures, too. Worse still, that you don’t remember how much conservatives mocked these men for coming on as strong in their activism as Garofalo has requires an awesomely selective memory.
IMO, what Garofalo does is just the same as what the aforementioned men do (and kudos to her for doing so)– she just gets slammed for it waaaaay harder than the men do. As if they think that she — dare I say it? — yes, I do — doesn’t know her place.
IMO, Garofalo is going to be far more harshly criticized than she deserves to be by conservatives regarding her performances on the Minds spin-off, and she’ll quickly be written out of the show by CBS for the same reason that women keep getting written out of shows on CBS: sexism.
– Rob
Garafolo is only funny when she’s trying to be serious, and is deadly boring when trying to be funny. Wonder which will be her role here? Having watched CM since the beginning, I’m having a hard time imagining that adding her to the spinoff will lead me to watch it. The CM episode last season that teased the spinoff needed much, but I don’t think the Garafolo was it. She may be female, but I’ve never thought of her as playing in the hetrosexual league(s).
Why do conservatives like “Whiskey” ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS try to shoehorn their crap in the comments section of EVERY BLOG? This is an ENTERTAINMENT NEWS BLOG, not Fox News. If this was a Martha Stewart message board/blog teaching you how to make pancakes you’d find some way to inject your Republican nonsense into it. Give it a rest. You people are FANATICS.
Hey Sock, I would propose you check the first shot across the political commentary bow for this article. I think you will see that Rob Jensen (posting #2) opened the Pandora’s Box. Whiskey’s commentary was likely inevitable, but you really should compare the blackness of pots and kettles.
On Rob’s assertions- For good or ill, Garofalo has been unable to separate herself as the artist from her art. The radio gig probably didn’t help, since so much of that performance aspect comes from persona. I think that is why Woody, Douglas, and Begley do not fall into the same league. Their activism might have been done by ANY activist. Their appearances are compartmentalized, with the exception of Begley.
Begley is beloved, because he talks/walks his beliefs. But you never hear smug superiority in his voice. He proposes “Here is what people CAN do.” Not “Here is what people do not do because they are stupid.”
My two cents. I’ve supported several JG projects and taken a pass on others. I have no interest in Criminal Minds. Unfortunately, my wife, who does like Criminal Minds, does not care for Garofalo.
Personally I’d rather see CBS commit more money to keeping Medium going another few seasons. Several folks assert CBS sexism, but I’m glad they gave that female-lead show a second life.

Why do liberal Hollywood elites always try to put their liberal spin into every movie and TV show that they act or write.
Janeane’s got more baggage than Louis Vuitton.
She’s the left’s version of Ann Coulter and her radical political statements overshadow any decent acting job she’s ever done.
Garofalo is toxic. She will cause at least half of the potential audience to not watch. Another looney hollywood actor who shoots themselves in the foot by opening their mouth at the wrong time.
If she wasn’t so insulting with everyone who disagrees with her–and by everyone, I mean “potential viewers”–she wouldn’t be such an alienating figure for her acting career. When she’s spouting about the “tea-baggers” and “in-breds” and generally stupid people, more than just those folks are listening.
Stupid casting. half the people who watch this show hate her, and she has pretty much said that she hates them.
i hope CBS is reading all this,i didnt know all this was going on with CM,ONE OF MY FAVORITE SHOWS,but letting two of the best on the show go will probably keep me from watching
BrianR – Because they’re not American Taliban like you teabagging, conservative Christian Righters. Maybe you should stick to the “Left Behind” books or Kirk Cameron’s fireman movies as they better reflect your values. Or watch “Passion of the Christ” 5000 more times.
Chuck D – First of all shame on you for co-opting the name of a real music legend. Second, Garafalo was in season 7 of “24″ and did great. Ratings were solid so there goes your theory that she’d alienate “half the audience.”
Wow you used all the Obama White House talking points. Are you Kal Penn sending out directives from the new Democrat run news media outlet.
Well I happen to be an Agnostic Darwinist who has never seen a Kirk Cameron movie or the Passion of the Christ. I would love to see Hollywood adapting lots more books into films because most of the stuff I’ve seen this year sucks. How about filming all of Mark Twain’s books. Or guess what more Kurt Vonnegut since some of them would fit right into you’re wheelhouse but I like his stuff anyway. How about the Sirens of Titan, that’s one I just read. Its got space travel, time travel and a lot of strange people and situations.
she is a CUNT LOW LIFE
I just love how some people are lumping her acting talent, previous characters, the CriMi spinoff, and her political opinion into one huge hatefest.
You can hate her political opinion, but that doesn’t mean she’s a terrible actress.
You can hate her arc on “24,” but that doesn’t mean she would do bad in this show. (I for one hated everything Jamie Kennedy, and Alex O’Loughlin had done before guesting on CriMi – but they managed to portray their characters on that show amazingly.)
You can also hate the fact that A.J. and Paget are being basically booted from CriMi, but that has nothing to do with the spinoff. They are separate shows that happen to exist within the same “TV universe” on the same TV network, nothing more. They do not share a showrunner, or budget pool.
Criminal Minds is that last show on CBS that I watch. With Janeane Garofalo joining in I gues I’ll be watching more cable. Big Mistake, Big Big Mistake!
