What a difference nearly two decades can make. Back in 1991, Paul Reubens was arrested for allegedly masturbating publicly in a Florida theater. His showbiz career was seemingly over. Now he’s heading to Broadway, making regular TV appearances, and staging a big screen comeback as the lovable Pee-wee Herman. After seeing Paul perform as Pee-wee onstage in Los Angeles, Judd Apatow is developing a Pee-wee Herman adventure pic for Universal under the Apatow Productions banner. Reubens is writing it with Paul Rust. No director is set.

Paul Reubens has been on the verge of a “comeback” for the past 15 years, at least
My daughter took me to see his show on opening night in LA. Just like watching his old TV Show. Couldn’t have been better. He looked amazing and still so funny. Glad you are going to Broadway Pee-Wee & back to the big screen.
This is great news! Paul Reubens is a brilliant performer and totally deserves this career renaissance. Thanks to Judd Apatow for getting behind him!
Well he’s definitely talented.
And I think we can say that he’s paid for his transgressions.
Good for him.
Just stay out of the cinema.
“transgressions”? He is a registered sex offender.
Mr Apatow is hiring a man who is a registered sex offender and a brilliant performer.
“transgressions”? he was in a PORN theater. it’s not like he was masturbating at shrek next to a 4 year old. no one ever gets busted at porn theaters – unless you’re a celebrity. i’m not agreeing with his choice of recreational fun, but jesus christ.
With masturbation jokes in every sitcom, it doesn’t seem such a big deal any more.
Pee-wee had faced charges stemming from a 2001 search of his Los Angeles house, during which police said they found materials that appeared to depict children engaged in sexual activity. He agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor possession of an obscene image “with the intent to exhibit his collection”. He was fined $100, received three years’ probation and agreed to be registered as a sex offender. At the time of Reubens’s arrest, police also took into custody actor Jeffrey Jones who in July 2003 pleaded no contest in Los Angeles Superior Court to a felony charge of hiring a teenage boy for an X-rated photo shoot.
I love this so much I could marry it.
its about time! So the guy is a pervert, big deal. He has been punished enough for a victimless crime if you even want to call it that. I’m sure the mega stars out there do far worse. Welcome back Paul!

the lead sentence in the article is really about his past? is that related to the story?
I thought his showbiz career was semenly over as well, but I guess not.
I don’t think the porn theater arrest is a big deal but how ’bout the GUILTY plea in the child porn a couple years back? Reubens would have gone to jail if the case had gone to trial. I think he’s worn out his welcome.
Can’t wait to see what the boys do with peewee
Ewww. There goes Apatow’s career.
I’m happy to see Paul Rust on as co-writer. He is a super-talented performer in his own right who’s been a star at UCB LA for some time.
And Gary Glitter is doing the music.
Let’s move forward, people – why is anything that happened twenty years ago even relevant? Paul Reubens is such a unique talent, and has so much to offer – let’s just enjoy the Show!
If Tiger Woods, Chris Brown and Martha Stewart can get a second chance at stardom, why not Pee-Wee? I’d love to see him in a movie as good as his first.
Will movie-goers be treated to Pee-wee’s wee-wee?
Paul deserves a comeback more than any other person in Hollywood. Brilliant writer and actor. He was amazing on 30 Rock. Glad to see PeeWee get another chance.
The jokes are just too easy here, so I’m not even going there – Good luck Pee Wee.
I think movie goers will be the ones to “stay out of the cinema.” This dude’s got more baggage than Samsonite and it’s all creepy.
What he was arrested for was tasteless, but he didn’t hurt anyone. I’d like to see his career revived. Very talented.
this will be awseome! i dont care what he did in the past its his own deal. but pewee in the spotlight brings back good memories and hopefully they will make some new ones!
I never understood the commotion about Paul Ruben’s arrest. He was in an “Adult” Theatre…doing what one does there. Yes, I know they considered him a children’s show star but Pee Wee was never really meant for kids anyway. Kids love it and him and he’s so funny but Pee Wee should have never been on Saturday mornings. Can’t wait for his return though. Welcome back!!!
They should get Tim Burton to direct it, he did a great job on the first one!
