EXCLUSIVE: Judy Greer has signed on to star in the CBS comedy Mad Love. With her and recent addition Sarah Chalke on board, the pilot’s 13-episode midseason order has now been finalized. CBS had been working on a pickup deal with producing studios Sony TV and CBS Studios for the past month, but it was contingent on locking in the cast. Greer replaces Lizzy Caplan who played the role in the pilot as a guest star but couldn’t commit beyond that.
Mad Love is an ensemble comedy about four friends in New York – Henry (Jason Biggs), Kate (Chalke), Larry (Tyler Labine) and Connie (Greer) – who are looking for love. Greer, repped by CAA and Principato Young, was an early favorite for the Connie role, but I hear it went down to the wire in a completive situation with ABC’s Desperate Housewives, which also was pursuing the Miss Guided star. The casting of Greer and Chalke, who recently replaced the pilot’s Minka Kelly, marks the second round of recastings on Mad Love, which replaced Dan Fogler with Labine and Ashley Austin Morris with Caplan just before the pilot was shot.
Mad Love, executive produced by creator Matt Tarses and Jamie Tarses, is one of two series on tap for midseason at CBS, along with the Criminal Minds spinoff. Additionally, the network and 20th TV continue to haggle over terms for a midseason order to drama Chaos. And I hear another comedy pilot, Team Spitz, looks promising to get an order for a new pilot.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

She is awesome!
she is good, but her shows fail
Casting news is interesting, but it would be nice to include mention of the writer of projects, since they wouldn’t exist without them (and clearly the cast is malleable).
“Mad Love, executive produced by creator Matt Tarses”
pretty decent cast but i’ll pass
i wish minka kelly had stayed on because i think she’s a better actress than chalke
Any idea when they’ll start filming? Do mid-seasons wait until January, or do they staff up and film in the fall?
So-and-so, replaced by so-and-so, replaced by so-and-so. I was told a story recently by a (very successful) film and TV director. He was shooting a pilot, and the network said to him, “We don’t like her hair. Fire her.”
He said, “No, let’s change her hair.” Which, apparently, makes him a genius in this town.
I love her on Archer though.
So is it fair to assume that Gimme Shelter (John Wells) will not be picked up?
Is Larry Charles’ untitled CBS pilot still in the running? Also, he has an NBC pilot still under consideration, right?
Thanks for the update on Chaos. I’m praying that CBS and 20th TV come to an agreement. Freddie Rodrieguz is an awesome actor and I would love to see him back on our TV screens.
um… Matt Tarses
Archer was my favorite tv show in the previous tv season-because it was so gutsy, hilarious & politically incorrect. I’m so ecstatic for Judy Greer – one of the most underrated character actors ( and one of the great scene stealers ) in the business. She was also wonderful with her guest starring role on “Modern Family”. i hear Judy is absolutely stupendous in the upcoming Oscar buzzing movie “Love And Other Drugs” with Jake Gyllenhaal & Anne Hathaway . I wish her continued success!!
She’s good. Funny.
I’m just another voice acclaiming Judy Greer for bringing so much I can really appreciate. I selfishly wish her a huge long arc of success!
Loved this show the first time I saw it – when it was called “Friends”.
Sarah Chalke is great! I hope this is a hit for her sake.
A shame ABC never could get her in the right sitcom, since they had a few deals with her. She should be a lead. Hey ABC the other funny lady that should be a lead is Rachael Harris. Maybe try her for the role of Paul Young’s wife that Judy almost took on DH. Either way she should be lead in her own show.
Hopefully Judy can continue to work on Archer. Even though it’s “just voice work”, she makes the most of the part and I can’t see a replacement doing it.
Ugh….Judy Greer???? Soooooo uncreative!!! Arent there any lesser known actresses that can do bitchy and sarcastic like Lizzy Caplan? Why not Lindsay Sloane? She does sitcoms really well and her pilot didnt get picked up. Also, dont they want to save money??? I like the rest of the cast. Thank goodness they got rid of Minka Kelly_not funny!! its a sitcom!! This cast is much funnier-minus Judy-its basically the megan mullaly character from “will and Grace”-make someone a star like that show did
What is with all the high profile re-castings this season?! From half of this cast, to Tom Cavanaugh, to Fran Kranz, to Ryan Devlin, to Kristen Kreuk… and on and on. Talented actors being shuffled around by to many cooks in the network kitchen I think.
She is very pretty. Simple yet beautiful.
Good for Greer, I dig her big time. With her and sexy Sarah Chalke on board I’ll be checking out this show.
“Mad Love is an ensemble comedy about four friends in New York…who are looking for love”
Way to be original.
gawd
She is funny but can’t seem to find a hit show although Miss Guided was hilarious. Surprised she is committing herself to a series when her film career has generated some considerable heat
