I hear both Fox’s Knight And Day and Warner Bros’ Jonah Hex are tracking terribly. As badly as Killers. But it’s still a few weeks out.

What does Hollywood expect at 11.00+ per ticket and $6.00 water. All but the top films are going to get kides and middle class people to go. Anyone see that teenage summer jobs is at the lowest point since 1969? Killing the golden goose.
I have to agree with this. I work in the business and I’ll admit I’m spoiled ’cause I see a lot of flicks for free. Just this weekend I went on my own dime and was appalled at the cost.
Forget snacks/bev. Who can afford that?!
If I take my girlfriend to Applebee’s, it costs me 30 bucks before drinks. Going to the theater is $80 for the back row balcony. And sporting events? You’ve got to be kidding me. I hate to say it, but movies are still about as cheap a date as there is.
Perhaps this has been answered before, but why do people blame “hollywood” for ticket prices. Aren’t theatre chains a completely seperate entity/industry?
The fees theatres pay for the rights to show movies eat up much of the price of the tickets, and the local taxes and cost of facilities and employees eat up the rest.
Theatres make their money at the snack bar. If it weren’t for that, they’d be gone.
Next time you see the $20 million fee some actor is charging to be in a film, you’ll be able to better equate that grossly inflated salary to the highway robbery they call a ticket price these days.
I can see why you wouldn’t blame Hollywood.
I mean, issues with students have nothing to do with the school system either right?
People blame Hollywood for ticket prices, because most of the ticket revenue (as much as 90%) goes to the studio, not the theater. The theater makes its money at the concession, which is why snack prices are so high.
Sarah, that 90% number is totally wrong. Theatres get a large portion of the revenue. If you remember when Alice and Wonderland was coming out, chains were threatening to boycott because Disney wanted to shorten the release window with DVD/Blu-Ray, and the chains went crazy because it was going to cut into their theatre run window and hurt their profits. if the movie was going to be on DVD only a short time after it was released in theatres. I’m not sure of the exact numbers, but I wanna say it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 30-40% for the chains. I’ve also read it’s a sliding percentage that changes the longer the film stays in theatres and the studios take their biggest cuts in opening weeks. But again, that’s nowhere near 90%.
Which is, by the way, a result of raising the minimum wage, exactly as predicted.
In my area, teens are losing their jobs (waitressing, dish washing, etc.) to all the illegal aliens willing to work the jobs for less.
It’s not the cost of the film or the concessions, it’s that these movies all suck. Who would pay a nickel to see Killers or Marmaduke, let alone $15.00-$20.00? And what have we got to look forward to the rest of the summer? The A-Team? Oh, well. I’ll be in line for Inception, but that’s about it.
One of the reasons Killers didn’t open is because NOBODY BUYS ASHTON AS AN ACTUAL MAN. He’s a boy. Men can’t relate to that guy. He’s way too soft to have us believe he can actually handle a weapon let alone be a “killer.” I don’t mean to be negative, it’s just the way it is.
Makes sense. Have you seen those trailers? A spy film with an actor who’s lost his public shine and a steampunk mess with a non-actress. Did anyone really expect either to be watchable?
You mean people don’t want to look at a hideously disfigured actor they’ve never heard of for two hours?
The devil you say!
Yes, he’s a great actor – not a household name though.
He’s also a raving kook leftist who can’t shut his pie-hole who’s on my growing list of actors who I won’t pay to see, not ever. And I assure I’m not the only one with such a list.
how dare someone be liberal when paul in pittsburgh disagrees. HOW DARE THEY.
Love these comments…more than likely written by people who have never made a movie before. And never will.
But they are supposed to pay for it. Or are you too good to take their money?
Like you. Nobody who has would bother with such remarks. Your projection is clear as crystal, pal.
For real, though, what is up with this summer? It feels like people aren’t as hopped up about ANYthing, even the big ones. Not sequels, not original properties…even the “hits” are coming in below expectations, like the fourth Shrek.
As far as Jonah Hex, that was an uphill battle to start…little known comic character, great actor but not a “name” opener and an ad campaign that looks like a darker Wild Wild West. Not to mention that the first trailer for it just came out last month or thereabouts. Knight and Day I’m psyched for, I just wish people were paying more attention.
bad movies, tracking bad, oh my how shocking
yes! you’re back on the job and bringing the news we want to read about, nikki. welcome back
This has to be the worst summer in terms of creative output and box office in many a moon. Not one movie has captured any excitement.
Inception
Knight and Day looks like it should have come out in 1993.
And the title should have come out in 1985.
It’s not the actors’ fault. The movies coming out look completely A) Bad, B) Uninteresting, or C) Both.
When Hollywood starts making good movies again, I’ll go back to the theaters.
Jonah Hex sounds like a tv show.. ie it’s bad.
Killers and Knight and Day are two sides of the same coin, split by demographics and aping better movies that have already been made (True Lies, Mr. and Mrs. Smith).
Knight and Day at least has some wattage behind the stars which you can’t say for Killers. Even so they both look like lame retreads.
John are you talking about Killers or Knight and Day. Both look like horrible pieces of shit. I am personally rooting for Katherine to fail after her horrible behavior with the Grey’s people. I hope this is the beginning of a nice long slide into basic cable for her. I think the Knight & Day trailers makes the movie look more like a spy parody. It’s not clear what the movie is about. Is she a civilian if she is how is she pulling Michelle Yeoh type moves in the trailer.. Everybody involved looks too old for this kinda thing.
I like getting the advance on these big $ pix. Can’t find this news anywhere else.
I just do not get K & D. Didn’t it film in like 5 days? That kind of flimsy product needs the hot summer names – like the Twilights or Jersey Dopes.
Exactly right about Kutcher, teenage girls want to see him, that’s about it. Not saying he’s not talented but adults have no interest in the guy. As for Cameron Diaz, no interest, Something about Mary was a long time ago. And Tom Cruise, he stumps a bit too hard for his cult for me to ever pay to see him do anything.
Also please Tom, put Les Grossman to bed, and by bed I mean in a coffin
Another bad film from Tom . It looms awful . I’d pay 3.00 no more to see that crap
I heard that ‘Knight and Day’ was doing extremely well with test screenings. And James Mangold is a solid filmmaker. Didn’t Fox just push the opening back two days to a Wednesday, hoping that the early release will help buzz accumulate before the weekend? Surely it’s not a move of desperation, or to avoid competition with ‘Grown-Ups.’ Even if ‘Knight and Day’ doesn’t open too strongly, I think it will hold up very well–that is, if it turns out to be as entertaining as I gather it may be.
‘Jonah Hex’ is doomed. Not only is it not tracking well, but I hear the thing is a disaster–completely unwatchable. I don’t think Warner Bros. even has a finished cut yet, and it opens next week. It definitely won’t be screening for press either.
I heard ‘Knight and Day’ is doing bad with test screenings and the tracking.
The film that I heard is doing extremely well with test screenings is “Salt”.
Best thing about Jonah Hex — Mastodon doing the soundtrack. Nuff’ said.
So does that just mean that the films aren’t going to make money?
Does it also mean that the films will be getting bad reviews?
I can understand Jonah Hex tracking poorly, but Knight & Day? With the exception of Toy Story 3 and Inception, it looks like one of the only good films of the summer. Cruise is parodying his own persona – a step in the right direction I think – and James Mangold has directed a few great movies so far. I think that this – like Valkyrie – will exceed expectations.
Killers?…Knight and day…Mr & Mrs Smith all the same crap to me, wont see it wont rent it, wont waste my time.
As for Aston Kutcher, he bragged about having 6 million twitter followers and he couldnt even get them to go see that should have been direct to DVD movie that somehow found its way to a theater.
Killers and Knight and Day look like each other and both look like retreads of True Lies and they all look like a half dozen shows on cable that are better acted and can be enjoyed free in the comfort of your living room. Not flicks you go out for or pay $12.50 for.
I for one can’t wait for Knight and Day which supposedly has gotten great test screenings and is opening on wed, june 23rd now.
The one-sheet for K&D says it all-no pictures of Cruise, just an outline. DOA.
I can’t even believe Kutcher as a wedding guest with a point-and-shoot Nikon.
that’s pretty damn funny, dude.
“The Last Airbender” trailer that ran before “Shrek” (zzz) looked incredibly uninteresting. Sorry, Slumdog guy, could barely see you through the cascading cg fire & water. ZZZ…This is indeed one of the leat interesting summer lineups I can remember in years.
