Remember last week I toldja that Knight And Day was tracking terribly — no better than Killers? Now theĀ about-to-be-released pic’s tracking is worse. Interest went from 29 on Friday down to 26 on Monday.

How can this be?? It was such a daring premise!
Tom Cruise is awesome in Knight and Day thats the only show i seen with Tom Cruise in a movie but i like the guy hes ok and i dont know why everybody hates him just cause hes jokes around doesnt mean u need 2 point a gun at his head. Now Tom Cruise is 2nd fav actor and i have 7 fav actors and actress 4 male actors but #1 is David Tennant but Tom Cruise shall not be judge any more with the likes of u peopes
This is surprising. The movie looks like fun. Every time I see the trailer in a theater, the audience responds positively. The billboards are terrible though.
This is curious, because at Google.com it has recently topped “Twilight Eclipse” in Google.com user keyword popularity…which indicator is right? http://www.google.com/insights/search/#cat=34&q=%22twilight%20eclipse%22%2C%22knight%20and%20day%22&date=today%201-m&cmpt=q
@ Alan,
You have to look right above the graph where there is a disclaimer that reads:
“Less than 10% of searches containing your search terms belong to the Movies category.”
Haha, not bloody likely!
I noticed the new trailer last night. It dumped the humor for action. It was a 180 from all the other trailers. It gave me whiplash. Obviously they are running scared. The movie looks EXACTLY like the Killers. If this movie tanks, that’s it for Cruise. Oh he’ll do other movies, but until he does the obligatory “comeback” film, he’s over.
And wait until that Les Grossman ovie tanks as well.
I’m sorry, but as much as many of us would jump on our couches for joy at seeing Tom’s career extinguish like a match taking on flatulence, Tom has topped too many blockbuster, money-making movies for his career to ever actually be in peril.
And as far as “the obligatory ‘comeback’ film”, he’s got two: the Les Grossman feature which is generating some outstanding buzz right now, and the next installment of a little franchise you may never have heard of – MISSION IMPOSSIBLE.
Is that Mission Impossible 4 or 24? Talk about a tired formula!
Les Grossman was perhaps funny as a brief bit in Tropic Thunder, but a whole movie of that? Yeah, good luck with that…
No surprise here. Talk about a tired formula. Even the title is stale and unimaginative. And Cameron Diaz is a little long-in-the-tooth to be playing the Meagan Fox look-pretty-and-scream role.
Wow. That’s pretty bad. The whole marketing campaign has been very weak. Those stupid viral videos of the two are just sad. I know he’s trying to get the public back on his side by playing a parody of himself but its not working. Tom Cruise is an A list actor who shouldn’t be reduced to that. He needs to fire his manager.
Gee, what a surprise – NOT!! Cruise has jumped the shark. After jumping on the couch on Oprah, his mean-spirited comments about Brooke Shields and his marriage to teen bride Katie Holmes this cannot be surprising. He shot himself, and his career in the foot. Cameron Diaz is like Katherine Hiegl. Old news, Yawn.
Well, what did they expect? Those ads are nothing to write about. There is NOTHING new to be had here.
Nothing new ‘here’? There’s, like, one ‘new’ idea at the movies a year as of late. I really want that serpent of unoriginality to hurry up and eat it’s own head already.
blame it on the marketing. how original. very insightful. tool.
One movie (Avatar) does not make a studio. Their entire slate is crap. If think people at Fox should start looking to jump the Titanic before the pink slips fly.
It’s a very tired formula fronted by fading star power. Hope industry hits inflection curve back to original scripts and creative literary works adaptations. Figures that Variety tolled death of literary book adaptations 2 weeks ago!
Could someone explain how “tracking” is measured? Where do the figures come from? What number is good? I take it 26 is bad.
Tracking is based on a weekly survey of 400 — yes, that’s right — a whopping 400 Americans, who are asked a handful of questions and then have to choose between one of two pre-fab answers.
To call it poor science would be giving it a tremendous compliment. It’s never right. Especially among young males, whom are least likely to answer phones, participate in surveys or commit to weekend plans.
Any way to pin this one on Alex Young too? This project also had quite a few writers. Maybe there’s a story there… Studio hires multiple writers for big summer movie that may underperform.
They were supposed to be on GMA today or tomorrow.
I just want to see Boston and Cameron, Tom’s role may be repetitive MI etc.
It’s tracking bad and like the rest of June/May because the studios are paying millions up front but not running ads on facebook, doing twitter or even newspapers, TV or even cheap ass radio to promote the upfront money they invested.
They need to get off the pipe of if you build it they will come mentality.
Not unless you put up some yard signs in bright pink a day or two before the yard sale does anyone every stop by to buy your junk.
Thinking people will just drive up to the movie theater is like a crack head searching for bottles. It might work, but not likely.
8movies5plays said “I just want to see Boston….”
I was thinking that too, until I saw the trailer.
Cameron’s character said she was “in Grand Theft Auto on THE I93.” 93 or I-93 is not a California highway. No one around these parts ever calls it “The I-93″ While they may have filmed in Boston, it seems like the filmmakers have made the film look and sound like it was set in some generic California city.
And of course this movie is tracking poorly; no one’s lining up to go to a Tom Cruise film anymore.
Fox could have lots of free advertising/promotion if they would take a closer look at their rude and stuck up in-house PR/marketing staff. One jerk can do you in. And they work in an industry that floats on schmooze? Total buzzkill.
I liked the K & D trailer and was looking forward to this film. But I’m not surprised if others don’t bend over backwards to spread the virals. I sure as hell won’t anymore, either.
Be nice, people like you and want to like your products. Be rude and you’re dead. Easy as that.
You know tracking can be off though. Look at the numbers for Kick-Ass. Everyone thought it was going to do great and it tanked. Splice was getting a lot of buzz and it tanked. Knight and Day looks better than Killers and it’s going to do better.
The tracking for Kick-Ass was skewed by fanboys and fangirls falsely representing themselves as typical of the 18-25 demo.
Every trailer I’ve seen makes it look like Tom is back to his couch-jumping phase.
Maybe Les Grossman should make a few phone calls.
LOL!!!!
i’m from europe and people here literally hate tom cruise. he has just a too bad rep. no one takes him serious, everything he does in public seems fake and staged. he reached a point, where everything he does seems calculated.
the only way to save his career would be to quit the church, and we know that wont ever happen.
We’ll have to wait and see how the domestic market plays out in light of this tracking news, but for a movie with these two stars I dont think you can make a complete evaluation of its performance until the international box office is tallied. Even for their disappointing movies domestically, their international box office appeal is undeniable when you look at the numbers.
KILLERS always looked like the poor man’s KNIGHT AND DAY. I think the Cruise pic will do much better. It’s a date movie and it’s going to surprise people. Avatar was the monster hit that can help the studio weather a bumpy road for some time before anyone bails, so I don’t think anyone is thinking of jumping ship – the reference to the Titanic really should be a comparison to OASIS OF THE SEAS, given the money Avatar will continue bringing in over these next years. With that said, you would think with the success of Avatar Fox would be dying to continue killing it in sci fi and have something else cool coming out… FROM THE STUDIO THAT BROUGHT YOU AVATAR COMES…
The problem is Tom is scary. The movie looks like he’s playing himself. The high strung maniac.
MARMADUKE – A-TEAM – KNIGHT AND DAY – 400 million for these 3 films to make and market….uhmmmmmmm oUCH!!
This will show them not to make more reboots and sequels!
everyone here seems to be jumping on the bandwagon. i am going to watch the movie. the box office will show you all wrong.
I have seen the trailer in front of 3 different movies this Summer and every time the audience responded positively.
I know I was going to see it, especially since this Summer movie season has been incredibly disappointing. It’s a shame that everything has underwhelmed and there weren’t enough big name tentpole films to fill in the gaps so far.
What happened?
I don’t know about you but this so called “tracking” sounds plain crazy. I, for one, am a big fan of little pear-shaped men and spazzy pizza-faced girls.
