Now here is perfect casting. Kevin Spacey has joined the roster of Horrible Bosses, the Seth Gordon-directed New Line comedy that stars Jennifer Aniston, Jamie Foxx, Colin Farrell, Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis. Donald Sutherland has also joined the cast–playing a nice boss. Brett Ratner and Jay Stern produced the film.
Of course Spacey’s playing one of the title characters. (For my money, Spacey played the most horrible boss I’ve ever seen onscreen in 1994′s Swimming with Sharks.) Filming on Horrible Bosses begins in July. CAA and Joanne Horowitz made Spacey’s deal. Spacey, who most recently completed the George Hickenlooper-directed Casino Jack, is now shooting the JC Chandor-directed indie Margin Call about eight high finance-types in the first 24 hours of the financial crisis of 2008. Spacey’s been working more lately, but he still is Artistic Director of London’s Old Vic Theatre.

I’m getting serious Jason Bateman fatigue. He’s good, but he’s in EVERY goddamn movie now. Always playing the same character. Please somebody tell the guy to take a holiday. Remember when Joe Pesci was in everything and then he wasn’t?
BITE YOUR TONGUE. JB was out of the spotlight long enough after “The Hogan Family”. Whatever roles he get, I am happy for.
i understand what you’re saying, remember when spacey was in everything?
I do remember the Spacey era. All too well. Thankfully it ended. As Bateman’s will if he continues to play easy parts and overexpose.
Do I need to call spoiler on that character being based on Scott Rudin?
also, the abuse he heaps on the assistant was toned down considerably because the truth was so horrible it strained credibility.
Where did the series he was out pitching with Rod Lurie end up?
Mr. Fleming, you completely spoiled Swimming With Sharks for me! :p
As for the other cast members, I think they’re going for so many recognizable names to bury the fact that Jennifer Aniston’s in it. The strategy helped He’s Just Not Into You make it all the way up to $93 million at the box office.
Aniston’s had better box office returns than any of the other cast for this film – it’s a myth that her films tend to be flops, and the proof is in her numbers. Doesn’t mean all her pictures have been great quality, but she does have a fan base. And particularly in this cast, she’s the only one with a strong overseas recognition and fan base. She’s proven she’s a capable actress, particularly in comedies, and this role is said to be a departure for her. From what I know of an earlier script, this should be a very different, sexually aggressive comedy role and I look forward to seeing her in something worthy of her talents.
AS for the casting of Spacey – I think this is spot on! I’m curious as to who Donald Sutherland is playing – it’s the first I’ve heard of his casting. Aside from the others listed above, I have only heard of Charlie Day also being in the cast as one of the disgruntled employees alongside Sudeikis and Bateman.
Jennifer Aniston’s name attached to a movie puts butt in the theater seats. Magazines where she graces the cover fly off the racks and she’s even helping her ex-husband and his mistress stay relevant. Those who say different are deluding themselves.
The assertion (Tabloid Celebrity puts butts in seats) is not true. There is generally no correlation between Tabloid favorites Aniston, Pitt, Jolie, Paris Hilton, the Kardashians, and so on generate enhanced attendance.
I don’t find Aniston the anti-Christ, nor untalented, but she’s old (for a romantic leading lady, cruel as that is), and available on tabloid and gossip sites for free.
Why pay to see her play a character when you can get her own real life tabloid character (wronged woman vs. husband stealing bad girl) in a soap opera that never ends?
The Kardashians, Hilton, and Jennie McCarthy are regular tabloid faves, as are Megan Fox, and the Gossip Girl folks. All are very minor factors if anything on attendance in any movie they make.
Of course, the same goes for Pitt, and Jolie. They couldn’t pull folks into any number of movies they made, despite/because they are tabloid fodder.
I don’t read tabloids or gossip sites and I think Aniston is a great actress so I’d definitely pay to see her in a movie. The Kardashians and Paris Hilton are not actresses, they are celebrities and I wouldn’t pay a cent to see them in anything. To state that Aniston is too old to be a romantic leading lady is laughable. Do you think romance is just for 18 and 22 year olds. Besides this is a comedy not a rom-com.
Are you kidding about Aniston? Her only hits are movies that would have done well any way – like Marley & Me. And you can’t give her the credit for He’s Not Just That Into You – that was a strong ensemble.
Did anyone see these 7 of her last 13 movies? Not exactly hits.
Love Happens – $22 mil
Management didn’t even make $1 mil
Friends with Money – $13
Rumor Has It – $43 mil
Derailed – $36 mil
The Good Girl – $14 mil
Rock Star – $17 mil
Over half the films you listed were smaller or indie pics, and their worldwide profit versus budget ended up putting them in the black. And the notion that her most successful pics had nothing to do with her is absurd – if that were the case she must be the luckiest actress working today. At some point people are going to have to realize and acknowledge that she gets hired for a reason. I often see the comment, “how does she keep getting hired when all her films flop?” The truth is that she wouldn’t – why would she be insulated against this when no other actor/actress is? Studios wouldn’t have her in constant demand if she wasn’t making them money. This is a business after all, and she is the sixth most bankable actress according to Forbes. Regardless of what you think of Aniston’s tabloid draw or her sometimes quetionable choice in projects, she is one of only three actresses (the others being Streep and Hathaway) to have four pictures (non-animated) open to $20 million or more in the last four years where the actress received above the title billing (either as star or co-star of the film). Can’t all be flukes.
You are obviously not very credible when you include 7 movies in your list of which 3 were low budget indies (which you don’t distinguish), show only domestic numbers and make statements like “the movie would have done well anyway”.
Aniston was one of the stars of Marley and Me and was the one who did all the promotion for that movie. While it was based on a popular book, that book sold a relatively small number of copies in comparison to the number of people who saw the film in the theatre and bought the dvd.
As for her last 13 movies. Guess what, 10 of those 13 movies were profitable (a pretty high percentage compared to many other actors/actresses). Rock Star, Rumor Has It and Management were the only ones not profitable. Even Love Happens made a small profit when you include DVD sales.
The Good Girl, Friends with Money and Management were indie films with smalll budgets and shown in less theatres. GG and FwM made $17M and $18M worldwide and when added with DVD sales definitely made a profit. Friends with Money had a prod budget of $6.5M and was only in 1000 theatres so P&A was lower than a wide release. It grossed $18M and brought in another $8M in US DVD so it definitely made a profit without even including TV rights. Management brought in $2M ww and $3.5M in DVD so it’s not far off the mark of profitability and could have possibly attained that with PPV and TV rights.
As for the other movies in that list of 13(all profitable)
Derailed – $57M ww, $27M dvd, prod budget $22M. Nice profit
The Break Up – $205M ww, $52M dvd, prod budget $55M, nice profit
Bounty Hunter- $136M ww (profitable even prior to dvd release)
HJNTIY – $178M ww
Marley & Me – $244M ww
Along Came Polly – $172M ww
Bruce Almighty – $485M ww
You are deluded and/or on the crackpipe. Typically, the ones (like Jolie & Pitt) who have been nominated for every single acting award in existence over the last 3 years, sometimes subsequently, and including tandem Oscar nods — are the ones who are “relebvant,” you catty ignorant COW.
Aniston is an uninspired lame TV sh*t-com hacktress whose best performance is STILL runner-up to watching paint dry.
Her ‘films,’ if you can call them that — that SHE opens, always TANK, and almost always are decimated by the critics (See Shat Happens, Rumor Has It, Derailed, The Booty Hunter) — movies that she partners with a big name MALE comedy star (Carey, Sandler, Stiller, Wilson, Vaughn, etc) as the female/gf/wife side kick typically do well (that’s her strategy for staying relevant, as well as riding Brangelina coattails), however, the studios involved could have easily saved themselves the extra couple mil, and hired Elizabeth Banks or Teri Polo, and gotten the exact same result.
So while I appreciate her gorilla PR agent Stephen Huvane and his back breaking image making he has consistently done for his former TV cash cow and current tabloid fixture (including stacking a s s wiping bloviators on the Deadline.com site and in this thread, so she won’t be rendered to bits by a majority who loathe her homely face) it won’t work.
She’s an unimaginative, dim-witted, no-talent lucky as hell middle aged narcissist who frankly, wouldn’t know acting ability or charisma, if she tripped over them in the street. She literally is the poor man’s Sarah Jessica Parker, if Sarah had no talent and repelled the opposite sex.
Give it up. Tell Aniston to go get the life she claimed she wanted after she created her scorned woman persona in the media, crying on Oprah’s teat, and in magazines, in the wake of her divorce in an effort to demonize her ex. Her strategy works with minivan cows in middle America who hate beautiful girls, but the rest of us, are fed up with her pedestrian low class boring presence.
She is everything that’s wrong with Hollywood. Even Lifetime TV is too good for this ish.
He’s just not that into you was carried by jen’s presence, she did all the promos. you brangelina supporters are something.you won’t leave this woman alone.
Why do you assume people that find Aniston boring, and uninspiring have to be fans of Pitt or Angelina Jolie? See, that’s Aniston’s problem, she’s coasted on the ghost of Brad Pitt and this wounded bird rep for going on a decade.
Do you think we’d even be talking about this lame if she had married Matt LeBlanc instead of Pitt. Get real. The only reason she’s relevant is because of people like YOU, who use ‘Brangelina,’ as her foil, as the inspiration to ‘root,’ for ‘Team Aniston.’ They’re the most famous people in the world, and Aniston has marketed herself as their victim, encouraging all that are resentful or bitter about their romance, to line up behind her.
Hell, she even marketed that dog movie, headlined by Owen Wilson on a nudie shot, and a catfight with Angelina ‘(Waaah, what Angelina did was so uncool,’ screamed Vogue) – then she went on Oprah and talked about Jolie and Pitt, then she continued on in some other major mag.
I think she’s pathetic, and a bore – and I’m no raving Brangelina fan. I’m just a woman who hates whiny weak vengeful women who can’t move on. In light of what happened to Sandra Bullock, and how strong and inspiring she’s been – Aniston comes off as even more useless.
Gary Cole would have nailed this part also.
I agree with the poster above re: Bateman, I’m not tired of him yet. A lot of his past roles were small supporting roles. I like to see him in leading roles or at least supporting roles with screentime like Juno. Looking forward to seeing him in The Switch with Aniston. The trailer looks good and I think it’s going to be better than I was expecting.
Re: the neg comment about HJNTIY. Aniston, Affleck and Barrymore were the draws of that film. IMO, the whole cast did a great job but Aniston, Affleck, Goodwin, Long and Cooper stood out for me. Aniston is a draw for young and old. People forget that although Friends has been off the air for 5 years, it’s still one of the most popular sitcoms in syndication and a new generation of teens that were not old enough to watch it first time around are fans from the reruns.
Horrible Bosses looks like it will be great. Really like Aniston, Bateman, Farrell, and Foxx. Looking forward to seeing what Day and Sudekis do. Not a Spacey fan so I was hoping for Balwin, Rudd or Hoffman but hey 6 out of 7 isn’t bad.
Another movie no one wants to see. I assume all these “wall street types”, will be liberal Dems, because we know that’s who supported Hussein Obama and got him in power.
Hollywood whistles by the graveyard again.
Interesting. Spacey is certainly the best actor out of all of them, easily. He can turn a crappy movie into a watchable one simply by being in it. Haven’t seen him in much of anything as of late, good to hear he still does films once in a while.
I’m much more interested in the TV-series project from Rod Lurie with Spacey as a cult leader. Any news about that? Showtime, HBO..FX?
Spacey? Who is that guy — oh hold on a sec, didn’t he have a career ten years ago?
Didn’t DLH previously report that Spacey’s most recently wrapped movie was called Inseparable, a movie he shot in China? Casino Jack was shot last year wasn’t it?
I’m actually more interested in seeing Inseparable.
I like Jennifer Aniston and I don’t get the endless fascination with tearing her down. If you agree, join me, and we’ll march on Washington.
I’m so with you on this. I’m sick of every word or move Aniston makes being torn apart and analyzed to death. No other actress is picked apart so extensively as she is, with their every box office and choice debated to such a degree. She seems like a decent enough and non-controversial person and she has proven she can be a good actress given the right material. I see no reason why so much of the online media community and tabloids take pleasure in tearing her down.
I will concede that I would like to see her make a move back to more dramatic, indie and less standard rom-com roles, as I think she is overdue for this, and really shines in those genres. However, this film and her other works in pre-production and development seem to confirm that she is headed towards mixing things up, so I look forward to seeing her challenged again onscreen. From what I know of an earlier script of this film, she has the potential to steal the whole show with her over the top sexually charged character. I’m really looking forward to this movie next summer – which isn’t something I can say about many films in summer 2010.
I think she was supposed to play a ‘sexually charged over the top,” character in that movie with Clive Owen, and failed miserably according to critics. That’s how her PR guy was marketing it anyway.
I don’t get the people who claim Aniston is constantly being torn down – what media outlets are you reading/watching? If anything she is bolstered, and supported and promoted up the ying-yang moreso than any other actress of her bent, simply because as a previous poster stated, she has worked the ‘poor pitiful me,’ routine, and attached herself like a parasite to Brad Pitt’s butt.
Her PR for instance, has released about 4 press releases about Jen’s spicy hot sexually charged role – and this, before she’s even stepped on set??
Come now. What other actress in Hollywood is buoyed so much by these baby sitting a s s wiping PR hacks?? CNN’s Showbiz ran a whole segment on Aniston’s jaded coy hackneyed movie promotional strategy, where she resorts to all sorts of trickery to sell a film. She’s been busted.
The resentment you see on message boards, is most likely due to this fact. I’m fairly certain that her ‘defenders,’ are paid flacks hired by her PR guy or they’re her friends. Some of you just come off as a little bit too impassioned and defensive of someone whose foistered Rumor Has It, and Love Happens and not too much else on the public.
She’s made a dozen movies in the last handful of years it seems, and gone unrecognized and critically savaged in just about all of them. My saying enough of Jen Aniston, has nothing to do with hating her, but at some point, after dozens of years, and no outward display of payoff, either performance wise or box office – one has to say, ‘okay, let’s give someone else a shot.’ Sometimes the absolute very best ‘Jen Aniston’ performance, is still not gonna be worth a hill of beans in the end.
Give the role that would have gone to Aniston, to Laura Linney, Maria Tomei or Lauren Graham — and then stand back and see something special, rather than see something coma-inducing and uninspired.
The only thing that’s “too old” is @Whiskey’s obsessive women hate and stale diatribes
I’m burning out on J. Bateman as well. Is anyone more overexposed right now? His reps are thinking short-term not long-term.
Oh look! The tired unimaginative movie factory has gone back to the well for more hack feature film making! That braintrust over there sure is hitting them hard with raw, original and out of the box casting that’s for sure. PUKE.
