His resume is filled with dance-centric TV programs with Britney Spears and Pussycat Dolls, and his first film, Fame, flopped. How then could director Kevin Tancharoen–a Fanboy at heart–regain enough street cred to put himself in contention to direct a scifi fantasy film? Tancharoen spent $7500 of his own money, got a script by Oren Uziel, called in favors with actors like Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan and made in two days what amounts to an audition film for an edgy new version of Mortal Kombat. It has become a viral sensation since Tancharoen posted it on Youtube early last week, getting around 6.5 million hits so far, and the Fanboy websites are all over it. Movie rights to Mortal Kombat–originally turned into a 1995 film by Paul W.S. Anderson–were bought by Warner Bros when the studio’s interactive division acquired the catalog of Midway Games. There are definite plans to relaunch the vidgame, but insiders say a movie is no sure thing. It’s a bit messy with original producer Larry Kasanoff and his Threshold Entertainment threatening a lawsuit. Whether or not he gets the job, Tancharoen’s phone is starting to ring again, which means it was money well spent. View the short below:

Let’s bring on the haters. For some idiotic reason. Some people are hating on the MK teaser short. But being and (adult) fan of MK. I have to give all parties involved who did this teaser/short props. And like another persons comment said….let’s see how far your $7500 in production of a trailer will go. Like I said “Haters”. There are those who just talk and those who do. And Kevin Tancharoen was a doer. And when I first seen this MK short. I was so hyped that it was even in front of me and would in a heartbeat spend $8 or more to see a full movie of it. Call MK what you want but, I bet u any money that it could be far better that some of the superhero/comic/video game movies adaptations that has come to us in the past years. I say bring MK:rebirth on. And I will fully respect anyone who gives MK a reboot. Note to self and others as an honorable mention. Please bring back BLADE for a fourth and or final film that matches that of the first to films in the series. It’s well needed. Just as it is with the MK reboot. I’m ready baby!!!!

I’m not a Mortal Kombat fan and I loved this short. Maybe a few hardcore MK fans find it offensive somehow, but I wouldn’t hesitate to see this movie when it gets made, and I think most people would agree.
This looks good! The darkness and the violence are there. If the tournament and the supernatural also come into play in a cool way, then you’ve got the essentials of MK. Interesting interpretation of the characters. Michael Jai White as Jax? Great casting. Bring it on

I think there’s a fine line between good looking movie that dosen’t take itself serious and one that does, and be able to be good movie. Yes Mortal Kombat could be made to be more realistic with that being the rage these days, but this movie trailer seems to be taking itself too serious for me. The first Mortal Kombat movie got the mixture right, the second went..well the second movie dosen’t exist to me. So yea i would love to see another MK movie, but if its a 2 hour version of this trailer with more money, I won’t go and see it.
I fully support this…and I hope WB has the bawlz to fund it, because it is a sure win.

With the story fighting to be both different from and yet still confined in the original Mortal Kombat universe I think that this is amazing work. Especially for what it is (only two days worth of work with a 7500 budget) I think its amazing and clearly had extremely talented people involved. Obviously this is a different take on the MK story, and I personally think that it would work very well as a feature film. If this film never amounts to a full version, I still count myself as lucky to have seen this. Cheers Tancharoen!
I have played every mk game out with the exception of speial forces, I still remember te genisis blood code (a,b,a,c,a,b,b) I remember when the first game hit arcades in 92, my freshman year. To disrespect this vision of mk is to disrespect those of us who truly love this series. From a true fans perspective, I will say I will be there opening day if this film is ever made. Hell I watched both films at the theater, had a copy of the animated film released with the first film, and watched the I’ll fated TNT series…. So yes I am a fan boy. Please Hollywood make this film.
This 8 minute trailer is bloody awesome. It turns Mortal Kombat into something realistic and in a dark and super cool way. First of all I’m a fan of Ian Anthony Dale and since I was a Mortal Kombat fan back in 1993-1996 it was super cool to see he gets the LEAD role as Scorpion in a new MK movie. Also Lateef Crowder is in the movie and Michael Jai White (need no introduction to martial arts people) so BRING ON THE MOVIE.
Yeah. I agree and having Scorpion finally get his limelight time is great. Even in the game he’s always been the Hero/Villain. Seeking his own goals but keeping the Earth Realm safe even though his hellish soul went threw so much pain. The tear he had that he’d never see his family again, the revenge in his heart to kill Sub-Zero yet confused on what really to do.

I absolutely loved it, Kevin Tancharoen talks about Mortal Kombat with exactly the kind of love for the series that I’d want to hear in a potential director. I really agreed with his suggestion that a man with experience in filming dance could potentially turn that skill to directing screen fighting.
I’d love to see him make this movie.

As a long time Mortal Kombat fan, zombie film lover, martial artist, and designer- I can say that I will be praying this production gets the greenlight asap and will be wholeheartedly disappointed if nothing ever becomes of it. Keep the story line damn near the same. Excellent.

Awesome trailer would make millions…..honestly other mk’s were D- at best….its such a huge story the story gets lost in the set up of the story….please find a way to make this or make one for Ender’s Game!

Could you imagine scorp and sub avin it out in that style of movie! Make it about scorpion and sub not poo kang and finding his animality with old clash of the titan stop motion. This short had awesome all over it maybe have the short as an early scene or intro then off you go! Maybe have molok in the movie and quan chi havin the leverage on scorp maybe bribe him later see im rambling FUCKING MAKE THIS A MOVIE!
