Frequent showbiz interviewer and newsmaker Larry King announced today he’ll exit CNN “Larry King Live” after 25 years on air. His last show will be in November but he’ll produce quarterly specials afterwards under his new contract. Here is King’s statement:
“Before I start the show tonight, I want to share some personal news with you. Twenty five years ago, I sat across this table from New York Governor Mario Cuomo for the first broadcast of Larry King Live. Now, decades later, I talked to the guys here at CNN and I told them I would like to end Larry King Live, the nightly show, this fall and CNN has graciously accepted, giving me more time for my wife and I to get to the kids’ little league games. I’ll still be a part of the CNN family, hosting several Larry King specials on major national and international subjects.
“I’m incredibly proud that we recently made the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest running show with the same host in the same time slot. With this chapter closing I’m looking forward to the future and what my next chapter will bring, but for now it’s time to hang up my nightly suspenders.”

He’ll be replaced by Conan O’Brien for nine months, then fired and replaced by Jay Leno.
I just fell off my chair! Things seemed to be going so well for Larry. Ratings through the roof, a great new marriage, fabulous interview skills that seemed to get better as the years went on. How CNN could accept his resignation? Who’s running things over there?
Interesting news on so many different levels.
1. Was Larry forced out after his recent appearance in the tabloids?
2. Did Larry feel the recent scandal was too much to handle and just wants more privacy?
3. How will CNN handle yet another high-profile talent jumping ship? And what will happen to CNN’s already declining ratings?
Good for Larry that he is able to know when it’s time to say good-bye. I enjoy watching him, unfortunately more for his gets, than for his interviewing skills. So many times I feel so embarrassed for him for getting names and facts wrong and showing that he clearly is not listening to what his guests are saying. Many times a guest will say something thought-provoking that begs for a follow-up question and Larry will just go on to the next inane question.
Oh well, maybe the other Bush daughter is available to replace Larry since the Today show snagged Jenna. Or there’s always Levi Johnston…
“…giving me more time to keep an eye on my wife to stop her from getting boned by the Little League coach” is more like it.
Heh, heh. The truth will always out.
I thought he was already dead.
a retirement announcement that is easily 5-10 years too late.
Little League games? Which wife and which kids? The guy’s 77 – his kids have kids in little league.
Thank the good lord for this boon to humanity.
I have watched Larry King Live since the premiere episode on CNN. His semi-retirement has been coming but it still is a sad day for CNN to lose one of its loyal and faithful longtime employees. I will miss Larry but I know that CNN has some specials in the making that they want Larry King to do for them. What a legend! What an amazing 25 year run with so many history making interviews with the greatest and best that the world has to offer.
I made Larry King Live my solid appointment on my television schedule and I am sure that it is his time to make a change and he did it his way, on his time, and on his terms. Now, how great is that!
This corpse should’ve been shoved out a decade ago.
Now they’ll replace with him with some other fluff loser. Because…
THIS IS CNN.
I have thought in general when it comes to CNN that they are very bland in all time slots.
If you look at the news stories coming out during the day and give no opinions on those or hardly any opinion you will lose your audience.
Looking at Foxnews who leads the ratings they have the regular news during the day but then their primetime spots are filled with opinion shows.
If CNN wants to survive they are going to have to start with getting some good opinion shows up and running. What I think would help them is to have an opinion show that talks on the Left and One that talks to the right. That would start to get at some of the people watching again.
