“He going to spread his wings,” one of my studio sources tells me now that Leonardo DiCaprio is set to play J Edgar Hoover in the still untitled biopic. Already getting early Oscar buzz for Chris Nolan’s Inception, Leo will be directed in the epic FBI drama by Clint Eastwood who’s producing with Brian Grazer and Rob Lorenz through Imagine and Malpaso. Scripted by Dustin Lance Black, production begins later this year. The project began at Universal, where Imagine is based, but came together at Warners, which Eastwood’s Malpaso has long called home. Imagine had been developing the Dustin Lance Black script for over a year before showing it to Universal, where the reaction was negative. But then Grazer got the screenplay to pal Clint (they did The Changeling and have had a personal relationship ever since), the two men met about it in mid-February, and the film has been on the fast track at Warner Bros. This will be DiCaprio’s first film with Eastwood. Great that DiCaprio is getting out of his Marty Scorsese rut.

What are they thinking?! Don’t they remember what happened to “The Good Shepherd”? Audiences aren’t interested in seeing period pieces about the founding of America’s intelligence agencies.
oh, please, speak for yourself. it’s attitudes like yours that help keep intelligent, provoking dramas off the screen. What I will say is that Michael Mann catered to his self-indulgence w/PUBLIC ENEMIES and DeNiro, well DeNiro cant direct hence the failure of SHEPERD. Now, Clint Eastwood on the other hand . . . though personally, I dislike the casting, and have always disliked Leo. He’ll never sound like a man. His voice is too high and whiny and he’s still got the baby far and the dude’s nearly 40.
bull shit there is no one is better than dicaprio, basketball diaries, departed, shutter island, gangs of new york, titanic, aviator was fuckin phenominal if anyone can act its definitly decaprio
YOU GO MAN! U ARE FUCKIN RIGHT!
NEVER, EVER, DIS LEO!!!! I LOVE U LEONARDO!
The Good Shepard wasn’t exactly a flop… 100M world wide. 60M domestic. Public Enemies did 215M. I’d watch this.
I don’t agree Bob. Hoover was a fascinating figure from American history. So much of the 20th Century was shaped by his work, and his relationships with people all across the political spectrum. The fact that Clint Eastwood is directing is absolutely a bonus.
The reason “The Good Shepherd” bombed is that is was boring. Eastwood’s movies are always very well-made.
Uh – speak for yourself. I loved “The Good Shepherd”, I’m very interested in the subject, and I’m looking forward to this movie. I doubt they’re looking to make a “blockbuster” – they’re probably just going to try to make a very good film. Attitudes like yours are more suited to People Magazine – why don’t you head over there?
scorsese rut. please.
The rut comment is a J.O.K.E…..sheeesh.
Leo worked with Ridley Scott, Chris Nolan, Sam Mendes and Ed Zwick in the last four years. I would hardly call that a Scorsese rut.
perhaps the rut comment stems from the fact that he hasn’t had any winners with those other helmers (exception being Nolan’s inception since it hasn’t been released yet).Scorcese has been the only director to bring credibility to Leo’s CV in the last few years.
Uhm, she kinda knows their successful track record so I’d say she was kidding with the “rut” comment too.
To comment on Sid’s post that Leo did not have any winners with those other directors, I believe that statement to be ludicrous. Not only did he get a Golden Globe nomination for Mendes Revolutionary Road, but he was nominated for an Oscar for Ed Zwick’s Blood Diamond. Now granted Scott’s Body of Lies was a disappointment, but who would pass up the chance to work with such a great director and a costar like the caliber of Russell Crowe.
Lets not forget as well that he is part of the second highest grossing movie of all time in James Cameron’s Titanic. Also he as worked with Steven Spielberg in a great movie, Catch Me if You Can. Not many actors can clam to have such a resume, and with the release of Christopher Nolan’s Inception, he will have another high quality director to put on it. Saying this I believe he will give a great performance in a movie that will bring him Oscar glory in the hands of Clint Eastwood.
Also made some damn good movies with Scorsese.
Will the film deal with his relationships with men, or not even go there?
Clint will finally get Leo an Oscar. He has for others.
“Marty Scorsese rut”
that mean line was definitely written by Finke.
Scorsese rut??? Gangs and Aviator, nominated for best picture and successful at the box office. Leo nominated for Best Actor for Aviator. Departed wins best picture, very strong box office. Shutter Island, negative reviews, strong box office. Hardly a rut for Scorsese or DiCaprio.
Scorsese rut. Poor guy.
has anyone read this thing?
I’d actually like to see Leo do something other than the tortured drama. I’d pay to see him in an Apatow romcom…
Scorsese rut??? Scorsese rut??? Scorsese rut??? Scorsese rut??? Scorsese rut??? WTF???
That is the most retarded statement I have ever read on this site.
I would really like more of an explanation, please Nikki?
You really need to redeem yourself for this one.
“scorsese rut”
4 films over 900 million worldwide plus an Academy Award nomination. Some rut. You say stuff just to rile people up. Carnahan is right.
Rut? Poor choice of words there
Better pull back the BS and tell the truth about Hoover.
He was a monster, a disgrace to this nation.
hope clint portrays hoover more accurately and sympathetically than recent histories have.
note well: he was never (like jeff chandler) seen in mom’s finery until well in grave.
clint and kid could restore the legend and destroy the myth.
Amen to that. I think this is a good step for him which hopefully bring him back to his Gilbert Grape character actor days. Let’s face it, and I know I’ll get grapes thrown at me on this board for saying this but the dude’s last couple of performances have been shit on stick. Shutter Island was his low point, for Marty’s as well I feel. He’s not a leading man folks. He’s character actor with only a leading man’s face.
Eastwood doesn’t fool around when it comes to the acting. You gotta have the skills and the cojones to fully inhabit the character when the cameras roll. He doesn’t play diva acts. You get two takes and thats it. Its put up or shut up. This is a good career move for him. I hope he gets back what he’s lost for awhile.
Alboone, please come back to reality. His performance in Shutter Island was universally praised even by people who disliked the movie.
Scorsese rut? Let’s look at their last three collaborations…
Shutter Island — Scorsese biggest money-maker
The Departed — Best Picture winner
The Aviator — Best Actor nomination
Hardly what I’d call a “rut”
good call
Leo will look great in a dress
Leo won’t be nod for Inception but Hoover’s role looks very meaty(if Freeman can be nod for his Mandela,i can believe Dicaprio will be nod and maybe win for Hoover)
Rut? DiCaprio’s latest performances in Shutter Island for Scorese and Revolutionary Road for Mendes were absolutly stellar. RIsky, passionate, and focused work. Truly expanding his craft. In fact, along w Mark Strong, he was the only enjoyable aspect of the otherwise weak Body Of Lies.
Mr. DiCaprio is most certainly one of the finest young American actors working today. When the guy turns 50, you’ll be calling him Brando.
I do not understand this at all. Hoover was one of the most dangerous men, maybe the most dangerous the history of America. We know about the King wire taps, but the subversion of the black power movement, the involvement in the killing of Malcolm X, Cointelpro, virtual hit squads on the American left, subversion of the law at every turn. And you’re going to make a movie about with a sympathetic star. You’re going to romanticize this bastard despite all the blood on his hands.WTF. Clint, have lost your fucking mind?
I too do not understand this at all. Perhaps Clint and his producers think that Hoover was some kind of honorable man. With LEO starring you are definitely looking for a particular group of the public to watch this… Which is crap. This was an Evil man. He doesn’t deserve a movie. I won’t watch this. Hoover hated all things foreign and all things non-white. Then again if you want to make a real AMERICAN picture he’s perfect!
Yeah,..Not actually a rut..He has been working with some great directors…Fail Nikki
How exactly is SHUTTER ISLAND, THE DEPARTED, THE AVIATOR considered a rut ? The only stinker out their partenership was GANGS OF NEW YORK, but that could be attributed to Weinsteins grubby fingerprints. If anything all those films further helped establish DiCaprio as an actor
Johnson once concidered kicking him out at the height of the vietnam war, but he eventualy decided that it was was better to keep him “in” pissing out, the “out” pissing in.
Not that that is much of a resume to start with.
*glares*

Yeah the last two movies made in that “Scorsese Rut” together only grossed $600 million.
Working with Eastwood will be a breath of fresh air for DiCaprio after all those overwrought & frankly miscast Scorsese movies he’s been torturing audiences with for the last decade. He may not look much like Hoover (too tall for one thing) but that can easily be worked around. Good luck to them I say.
