A fun pre-Father’s Day quiz. What do new series NBC’s The Event, Hawaii Five-O, ABC’s Happy Endings and Fox’s The Good Guys have in common? They all had a strong showing at the upfronts: The Event was unveiled as NBC’s flagship new series for next season, Hawaii is CBS’ marquee new drama offering for fall, Happy Endings was touted by some as one of if not the best comedy pilot this past cycle, while Fox’s summer dramedy The Good Guys got a surprising upgrade to the fall schedule with an additional episode order. But the four series also share another common thread: they all star the offspring of famous actors: Jason Ritter, son of the late
John Ritter, is the lead in The Event, James Caan’s son Scott plays Danno in Hawaii, Tom Hanks’ son Colin stars in The Good Guys and Damon Wayans Jr. co-stars in Happy Endings. The dads all were the leading men of successful series, Three’s Company (John Ritter), Las Vegas (James Caan), Bosom Buddies (Tom Hanks) and My Wife And Kids (Damon Wayans). Let’s see how their sons will fare. And speaking of sons making their dads proud before Father’s Day, how about the $56 million Will Smith’s son Jaden kicked up at the box office this weekend? Beats a World’s Greatest Dad mug.

I think Jason Ritter will go the furthest in the long run. After watching him on “Parenthood” and in the trailer for “The Event”, it’s clear the guy has the looks, the talent, and the charisma to succeed in a major way. He’s come a long way from “Joan of Arcadia” in which he was good, but didn’t stand out. I think his fame will continue to grow, and we’ll see him doing great things on the big screen one day.
Damn, I wish my Dad had gone into entertainment and not the dry cleaning business!
Yes, I’m player hating!
All I get is clean shirts!
Alas, Mazel Tov!
That was priceless! And, I agree!
Fuck Nepotism.
How insightful. Nicely done.
If it wasn’t for nepotism, g-jobs and kickbacks this industry wouldn’t survive.
if you’re gonna post stupid shit, go to the imdb boards.
Ritter is a really great guy. Had the pleasure to work with him on a small indie and he was very cool & very gracious.
The Wayans’ are a joke… I don’t mean hilarious.
Ritter!! You rock, sir. Best of luck, well earned.
fuck you nepotism!
It’s not nepotism if they’ve got talent. Sure, it may have opened the door, but the door can swing shut just as quickly.
Colin Hanks is one of the most talented actors today. He’ll match his father’s awards list in a few years.
You must be on Hanks’s payroll. His son is one of the worst actors in Hollywood and should I mention one of the most uncharismatic ever? Audiences will not follow this guy, just wait and see. Its a painful experience.
good on Mad Men in dramatic turn, but watching him in comedy is a little painful/forced
Did you see GOOD GUYS?
Jason Ritter is not only a great talent but a great guy, as well. Truely a class act. I wish him all the best on The Event, which, looks like it could be huge. Go, Jason!!!!!
to all you nepotism haters – don’t paint them all with the same brush.. some of these actors are really special talents and splendid humans. others on the list – not so much. but i know for a fact that jason and colin were raised right and are exceptionally considerate and grateful young men and i wish them only the best in life.
Indeed Jason Ritter is a hard working and talented actor. He also, as previously mentioned, is a stand up guy. the few brief times I’ve met him, he’s not pretentious and genuinely a nice guy.
Megan, unfortunately (with the exception of Scott Caan who would do well to not get into any more gay bar brawls if he wants to stay in the closet and would probably be doing better work if he didn’t have the height of a dwarf) none of those kids on the list above have an ounce of talent. The only reason they’re getting cast in ANYTHING is because daddy is paying for it as was the case with the Colin Hanks “starrer” The Great Buck Howard which only got a perfunctory release at that because daddy did a cameo in it.
