The TV Critics Association went for changing of the guard with the nominations for its annual awards. Freshman comedy Modern Family was the most nominated program with 5 noms, followed closely by another hot freshman, Glee, and drama Breaking Bad. Meanwhile, awards darlings 30 Rock and Mad Men didn’t fare well. 30 Rock was shut out completely, while Mad Men landed only one nomination. In addition to Modern Family, Glee and Breaking Bad, departing veteran Lost and critically lauded but low-rated Friday Night Lights made the cut in the top Program Of the Year category. Other underdogs that made a big showing: Sons of Anarchy, Party Down and Parks and Recreation each earned two noms, as many as CBS’ new drama The Good Wife and hot comedy The Big Bang Theory. I;m surprised True Blood and Treme were left off the list. They’re both critical darlings.
Wow. I could never choose between so many strong contenders in each of the main categories without a 5-sided die. How do the Television Critics decide?
So glad to see Sons of Anarchy get some love. From about halfway through season 1 to the end of season 2, it has been strong. Not sure if it is Breaking Bad good but its definately in the discussion.
Also happy to see Aaron Paul get some love. Cranston is awesome but Paul really makes things go on BB.
Six months ago I would have been ALL ABOUT GLEE. Now, with the back 9 nearly done I have lost my crazy love for the show. Its still good but the themed shows(Madonna, Gaga, etc…) I believe its lost its way. What made the first half of the season great was the diversity of music, their ability to match a song to a voice and the overall tone. They have lost their way on the first two. Definately not strong enough over the full season to warrant the win over the others.
Why is Lost on this list at all? Breaking Bad FTW!
Why is Lost on this list?
Because it ROCKS!! And it’s BRILLIANT!!
Disappointed to not see Jon Hamm on the list. Thought he had a great year last year. Hope Aaron Paul wins.
Good to see Fridy Night Lights there. Well written show. Ditto for Sons of Anarchy.
With “Modern Family” seeming to be at the top of the pack for comedy, I would not completely discount funny genius “Parks and Recreation” just yet. Both shows have ensemble casts that work cohesively and genuinely well together. It’s going to be a tough one within the comedy ensemble category.
given the appeal of GLEE and MODERN FAMILY in both numbers and accolades – and before that “whiskey” person posts something “informational” here – i’d like you to read an outtake from one of his blog posts a while back. He writes:
“creators such as Tru Blood’s Alan Ball, the openly gay writer/producer behind “American Beauty” and “Six Feet Under” have shown the ability to attract critical attention and some female audiences, they have not been able to generate much in the way of male audiences. Which is understandable, gay men have little understanding of the nature of straight life, from family ties and responsibility, to the competition among men for the limited pool of available and desirable women. “Tru Blood” for all the ink spilled on its behalf, has never been able to generate the type of audience that either “Royal Pains” or “Burn Notice” has, let alone a broadcast show like “the Mentalist” which received 22 million viewers at its height during the first-run season. Indeed the concentration of gays in television and movie producing is problematic, as folks like Ball or “Superman Returns” producer/director Bryan Singer (also openly gay) simply lack the ability to connect with men, their concerns, or values.”
now, with proper context, we can all lean forward in our seats, and wait patiently for “whiskey’s” penetrating insights… and i’d just like to add, for “whiskey’s” benefit – regarding audience and ratings: look at average household income, then find GLEE and MODERN FAMILY on that list. okay. as you were…unfortunately.
What’s funny is people give Glee crap for a “Gaga” episode in which “Gaga” made up 2 of the five songs performed; there were other episodes this season that did that, even in the first nine that were not “artist” episodes.
Neil- Lost is in the list. Look up.
Surprised that Lithgow gets the nod for “Dexter” but not Hall.
Wondering how many wrote down “Friday Night Lights” just out of past memories, because this season is just not up to par in the way of writing as any of the first few.
@Chris – Completely disagree with your take on FNL. Season 4 is absolutely the best season since 1. Just because there’s new characters and a new (deprived) school, doesn’t make it week. It’s underdog story has made it incredibly compelling.
CHEERS to TCA for the MUCH DESERVED recognition!
“Glee” has kind of sucked lately (First 13 a lot stronger than back 9). What do the critics see that they think merits awards?
Thrilled Ty Burrell got nod; that guys is seamless, genius comedy. TREME was robbed; Khandi, Simon/Overmeyer, Zahn, Wendell Pierce!, new show. Robbed, I tell you. Let’s riot.
How is Friday Night Lights nominated for Program of the Year but not Drama of the Year??
That is odd. I don’t watch FNL but there’s definitely incongruity happening.
Glee is great, and will score will with the critics. Mod Fam was better most of the season but lost its way with gimmicky shows like Hawaii. Probably be Glee or parks.
PARKS AND REC over COMMUNITY? Hmmmm….
I’m surprised by the inclusion of Glee – it’s entertaining, but the writing is horrible, especially in its Back Nine.
Very happy that House was skipped over.
It has not deserved recognition the last two season. Even Hugh Laurie, who is wonderful in general, should not have gotten a nod for giving his all in the dreadful scripts the writers and show runners coughed up this season. It just encourages them.
Hope the Emmys will follow exactly in their Drama Series category. No need for rubber stamp nods for past glories.
Go The Good Wife and especially Sons of Anarchy
Party Down is the best show that no one watches.
GLEE GLEE GLEE GLEE! Although the back nine were not as strong as the first half of the season, several episodes were incredible… Dream On, Journey, etc. While the acting itself may not be as strong as other contenders, the show is hilarious and deserves each of its nominations. What they have been able to achieve is incredible… before its premiere, would anyone believe it would be possible to pull off a weekly musical television of such high caliber so seemlessly?
SOA Rules. Best drama on t.v. & Kurt Sutter is a genius & the most under-rated writer in the business. Charlie or Jax if ur a fan is possibly the best young actor on t.v. right now. I hope Sutter gets his 7 seasons so we can all enjoy the ride. SAMCRO rules and season 3 Kurt went out of the box & for those who don’t get it…..then ur not watching. As a fellow Irishman I say happy St. Patricks day to you & the wife & keep up the great work!!! Your true fans love you and the show.
