NBC Universal, which faced some tough questions on Capital Hill last week about the proposed NBC Uni-Comcast venture’s commitment to diversity, will have a major presence at the July 28-Aug.1 convention and career fair of the National Association of Black Journalists in San Diego, highlighted by an appearance by NBC Uni president and CEO Jeff Zucker.
According the event’s schedule, NBC Uni will sponsor four sessions, the only media company to do so, with company’s reporters and executives also appearing on nine other panels. Among the NBC Uni 4 sessions is a panel featuring Zucker about the new J.J. Abrams drama series Undercovers, which stars two black actors, Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson will moderate the panel, the only one at the convention dedicated to an entertainment program, which also includes Kodjoe and NBC Uni’s chief diversity officer Paula Madison. Completing the NBC Uni theme at the convention, NBC News and its local TV stations will receive NABJ’s Best Practices Award, and Paula Madison will receive its Legacy Award.

This is decent. Maybe the other networks will chime in. Good shit.
I think the convention is July 28th until August 1st? That’s what I told my boss?? There is a celebrity golf tournament next week.
When will they be hosting the National Association of Caucasian Journalists?
dear burrbank – your foolishly titled event is the code name for every other journalist gathering. so, no – this one is just for african-american journalists to pow wow. if you’ve got a problem with it, you should start your own. may i suggest the national unenlightened, unemployed blog commenter convention.
Nicely said.
It’s interesting. If it’s an Association for Women, Latino, etc, then, not a major issue; however, if it’s an Association of any Black organization, I always read (or hear): “What about Nat’l Assoc of Caucasians or White Journalists” (or other professional org).
Various religions, cultures, races, etc have professional organizations centered around a particular community’s interest that are not often addressed by the mainstream. Most people understand that and support it, but I often find it amusing that there is always the few that try to belittle, dismiss and make fun of an existing minority group that tries to assemble to discuss policy, issues, or hopes they may have.
They should get a life.
I wish all of Hollywood could evaluate the diversity within their company…
Blacks are already vastly over-represented in commercials and in broadcast/cable TV.
Blacks are 12.5% of the population. Of that number, only 40% are middle class, or 5% of the population is Black and Middle Class.
There is no sense in presenting most Blacks as middle class — when clearly most are “Urban Core” aka Ghetto, with all the dysfunction, illiteracy, and criminal background that implies. There is no sense in presenting Blacks as married middle class, when the national rate of Black illegitimacy rate is over 70%. People know they’re being fed a line of bs.
I’m glad there is BET. Black folks deserve and support a network oriented just for them. That is the whole world of possibility for Cable: Gay and Black and Golf and Food and other specialized cable nets. Some even appeal to that narrow demographic known as men (USA). Or at least, it used to.
Other questions abound. Can Black journalists be expected realistically to be tough on a Black President, or will they be “race” men and women? How can Black journalists ever relate to the concerns and the culture of Whites? Things look a lot different when there is no National Association of Caucasian Journalists, no quotas and mandates for White hiring, and White men are the only folks legally outside equal protection.
What the freaking hell?? Are you high?? And how old are you?? Have you been living under a rock?? Come to the convention have fun. I will be there with my family– Both white and Black??
You need to stop putting so much starch in your KKK robes.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
Wow. Thats really all that I can say right now to this entire ignorant post.
You’re “glad” there’s a BET? So it can only be just for “them,” as if blacks arent another group of people just like everyone else. The reason why there are “niche” channels, conferences, organizations, etc, that target minorities is because mainstream everything focuses on a white, male, heterosexual structure and anything else is considered to be not normal. If television networks were more open in general, then there wouldnt be a need for cable channels targeting a specific group of people.
Overall, its rather disturbing how people can marginalize and stereotype a group of people just because it doesnt apply to them.
Wow, Jethro, that was a surprisingly coherent string of close minded racism coming from someone who only judges an entire race by what’s presented on the evening news. Kudos. *applauds*
I was befuddled by such an ignorant comment, but then, I saw that Whiskey wrote it and just shook my head…again.
For those not familiar with him, he is known on Deadline as quite the bigot.
I’m surprised that he hasn’t changed his name because the premise of his comments are always utterly dismissed as garbage.
I cannot understand why boris kodjoe is not a star.
now THAT’s a smart post. hopefully this series will help his star rise. drop-dead gorgeous and has chops. not the nicest guy in real life but its ok as long as he takes his shirt off on celluloid now and again.
its a done deal people. the event and panel are going to happen. any arguement for or against is futile. organizations and people aren’t spending major dollars on these types of events for nothing. plus, think of the residual effect on the SD economy. it all comes down to someone advancing the ball for their agenda……that’s american style.
Ignore the Whiskey post. He/she is a bigot and a tea party member.
You mean there’s a difference between a bigot and a Tea Party member, The Frenchman? Really?
You do know that NBCU is doing this because U.S. Congresswoman Maxine Waters has called out NBCU on their LACK of DIVERSITY in its programming and its staff?? They’re not doing this out of the kindness of their hearts – they’re doing this as a DISTRACTION.
Whoever the black person is who aced whiskey out of a job/wife/whatever and made him such a hateful scumbag, I hope that person is having the time of his life…
